XP freezes on rapid cursor movements under heavy cpu load
by Guest nirwana@gmx.li- 7 replies

Hi, when I "work too fast" under heavy system load, i.e. I switch between task windows, open and close browser tabs and move the mouse cursor rapidly across the screen I experience random system lockups (system hangs or system freezes). I can only press the power switch and restart the system. It happens about once in 48 hours but it happens out of a sudden, I've never found an error message close to the crash time in the logfiles. I am running XP-pro SP2 on a Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ Fujitsu Amilo K 7600 Laptop PC with 1GB of RAM Video: KN266 integrated S3 Prosavage 32 Mbyte shared memory, true color Audio: 18-bit stereo audio (AC97) Pointing devi…

Need HELP Transferring Print Servers PLEASE!
by Guest DJone- 2 replies

Hoping this is in the correct area of the forum... Ok basically just looking for the best route to switch users (About 300-400) who are using printers on a current print server (Windows Server 2003 box), we'll call print-serv1. So all the printers they use are currently on that server and they are printing through that server as well. We have made a new server, we'll call print-serv2, and have installed and tested all the printers that the users are currently using on the network through print-serv1, still keeping the share names and drivers the exact same (FYI: This is also a Windows Server 2003 box). What is the quickest, easiest and least painful w…

sounds cuts out when typing
by Guest Andy Collins- 4 replies

Hi I've always had problems with my PC where any sound that is being played 'stutters' when i'm typing I'm using a Realtek AC97 soundcard, and a generic USB keyboard. I've tried replacing the keyboard for another one, but it has made no difference Out of desperation, I formatted my PC and reinstalled it this weekend, but even with just Windows, and the device drivers installed, I still get this problem Can anyone suggest some things to try to fix this? I don't know if its relevent or not, but I also have a Soundblaster Audigy card installed, but this is disabled

Obscure file association puzzle
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 6 replies

This is an odd one: when I d-click an AVI file in a Win XP folder, one of my other programs called Bulk Rename Utility (BRU) loads! It's obviously arisen because of something I've been doing this morning. I loaded a later version of VirtualDub, and re-associated AVI files with the new version. But I screwed up somehow and got into a mess. I eventually deleted the type AVI in Tools > Folder Options > File Types and added it back. But now it's disappeared from the list of file types. I can use 'Open With' OK, but get this bizarre behaviour when d-clicking. Any idea why BRU should have taken over please? More important, how can I fix? I should add that I…

The log file shows a crash at RUNDLL32.EXE. System was perfectly stable yesterday. The only thing I changed within the last 24 hrs was to update Ad-Aware 2007 to the latest patches. Does anyone speak crash-dump? Any help would be tops. Microsoft ® DrWtsn32 Copyright © 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved. When I have several active windows open and I use the task bar to jump between active windows, other active windows pop up to the top. This happens most noticably when active windows are stacked. So, say I have 5 active IE windows, I click on the IE active window item to cause the 5 individual window items to display so that I can choose one by a second mouse click. When I make the first mouse click, on the IE active window item, a completely different active window jumps to be displayed on top of all the other active windows on my desk top.

Recurring sound failures
by Guest MikeB- 11 replies

This is driving me up the wall. I have a dual-use computer that my daughter and I share. Frequently the sound fails and I have to jump through hoops to get it restored. Initially, this was an IBM Aptiva with a sound card. I found that if I deleted the sound card from the hardware configuration and rebooted, Windows would detect the device and reinstall it and sound would function again. Recently I totally revamped the PC, replacing the original motherboard with an Intel DP35DP (http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/DP35DP/ index.htm) motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, new memory and a new harddrive. The new motherboard has integrated sound - …

Files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak"
by Guest Jack- 14 replies

I read that I could backup those files(wpa.dbl and wpa.bak) from system32 folder before I decide to reinstall windows on my reformated drive , this way I would not need to go thru the XP activation process again. However I cannot find the file "wpa.bak" , why is that ? I have XP Professional and I never did any reinstallation. Thanks. Jack

"A line of USB drives sold by Sony Electronics installs files in a hidden folder that can be accessed and used by hackers, a Finnish security company charged Monday, raising the specter of a replay of the fiasco that hit Sony's music arm two years ago when researchers discovered that its copy protection software used rootkit-like technologies." http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/082707-deja-vu-sony-uses-rootkits.html

Cannot uninstall Windows Desktop Search
by Guest M8RIX- 1 reply

Greetings, I am receiving frequent (50+/day) errors in my event viewer related to Windows Desktop Search. I would like to reinstall the program to see if I can solve the problems. Unfortunately I see no way to uninstall the program. There is no entry in the add/remove programs and there is no uninstall.exe for it. There is no $NtUninstallKB907371$ entry for it either, and reinstalling over the top of the existing installation does not recreate the uninstall routine. After doing some research on the matter, I see that someone had some success in recreating the uninstall data by deleting some registry entries and then doing a reinstall, but they did not say…

Cut and paste stopped half way through
by Guest Sean- 3 replies

Hi, My friend wanted to move a folder from her desktop onto a network mapped drive. She right clicked on the folder on her desktop and clicked Cut, then went to the location on the network drive and right clicked and clicked paste - it went about half way through and then a message popped up saying there is not enough disk space available - she then clicked OK to this message and was left with half the contents of the folder on her desktop and it deleted the other half that had been copied on the shared network drive. She tried straight after to right click and select PASTE to a different location but the PASTE option was greyed out? Is there any way to …

Internet not working after XP reinstall
by Guest danieldaniel- 1 reply

I reinstalled XP after reformatting my hard drive and now the internet does not work on my computer. My wireless card worked for about three hours, but the ethernet card has never worked since the reinstall. My wireless card shows that I am connected to the network and it has a strong signal. However, when I open IE, the page comes up and says that it cannot be displayed. In the bar at the bottom, it shows to be detecting proxy settings, but then the page comes up blank. Also, since I reinstalled XP, my computer does not recognize any speakers on my laptop. The computer makes a loud beep anytime a warning box pops up rather than making a chime sound th…
