Batch help
by Guest RJ43- 1 reply

I'm trying to write a batch job for Power "Low battery alarm". I wanted to display a JPG file and then continuously play a .WAV file. I'm using the program irfanview to display the image and Windows Media player to play the sound file. From a command window when I type xxx.jpg, irfanview displays the image and the prompt returns. However, running the batch it waits until irfanview terminates. The odd thing is, the first time I ran my batch program, it hung on the jpg, but the .WAV files played one after the other. Then something happened and now the Media Player just plays one WAV file and the batch job now pauses until Media Player terminates and the…

by Guest John- 1 reply

I purchased a new XP computer (woohoo!) and found something annoying. If I have the Folder pane open under Explorer and click on a folder without subfolders, the + icon appears on the folder when it shouldn't. The really weird thing is that if I minimize the window and thing open it, the + icon disappears! Is there a patch/fix for this? Thanks...

Windows not seeing new RAM
by Guest Exp- 10 replies

Hi, I'm having some issues with memory. I just installed two new modules of memory (see link below). Both memories, two old modules and two new modules, are compatible with the motherboard. The system, it seems, sees only 2 modules. Check 2 links on the bottom to see screen shots of the Task Manager. I have tried switching both pairs and putting them into different slots, but whatever I did, the Task Manager showed only 2 modules. Then I run PC Wizard, and the wizard sees all 4 modules. Screen shots are down below. Any ideas on how to tell Windows there is more juice? Thanks a lot! Exp. Task Manager 1: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9436/…

XP service pack 2 prevents installation of software no shortcut er
by Guest rodeoxp- 12 replies

Hi i am totally new to forums, but would be enormously gratefull if anyone can shed any light on this issue for me. I have windows XP home on a pentium 4 machine with adequate ram/cpu (recently overhauled) and am unable to install the art software for my daughter (kidpix) because the process is halted about halfway through by an error message stating that no shortcut could be created. I am told this is because the machine is older and that there is something in windows service pack 2 which is causing this. Many thanks simon.

I uninstalled some ramdrive software and now XP reboots after the login screen. The same happens in safe mode. The only way I can boot into XP is by using the "last known good configuration" option. Unfortunately no restore points are available... Can someone please describe which steps I should follow to repair XP?

Problem with Installer
by Guest Candace Sparks- 1 reply

I have a laptop that has issues. There is a DVD-RW in the laptop and it has a red circle with a line through it over the top of it in My Computer. In the system, I see a DVD-RW, but in My computer it shows a CD-RW. Also, when I connect a USB external DVD-RW, there is a red circle with a line through it, also. If I run the setup for the software I am trying to install, I get an error that the administrator set policies to prevent the installation. I am really confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Candace Sparjs

huge disk without partition aggregate
by Guest Pierre- 3 replies

hi, I have to have access to a lot of big files files whose total size exceed one disk space (> 20 TB) I have enouth disk space but on multiple disks I do not have the oportunity to do a partitions aggregate I do not want to bother on what disk the files are (I want to see my disk space as a huge disk, not multiple ones) I want to do read/write access I do not have the money for a SAN or NAS I though to DFS but I can't see how to make a directory span disk boundary (AFAIK, with DFS a directory must reside entirely on one disk) is there a solution, either with MS or third party ? the client is XP but the data may be on a 2K3 server. TIA, Pierre.

Menu accelerator keys (underline) not visible
by Guest Derek- 2 replies
This probably has an easy answer, but haven't found it yet.. I recently got a new XP machine at work (SP1). Before this, every application's menu showed their accelerator keys with an underline under one letter in the word. E.g. in "File" the "F" was underlined. On my new machine, NONE of them show! I understand that they're still functional, but I want to see them. How to get that back? Thanks in advance!

System Restore Settings (Drive Usage)
by Guest Morgi3- 4 replies

Hi, To reduce the max amount of space system restore uses I reset the reg key at: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore \DiskPercent=3 To 3 as you can see, so my slider for System Restore shows use 3% max of the drive. My drive is 74.5 gb. When I check the size properties of "c:\System Volume Information" is shows as: Size: 6.29gb Size on Disk: 3.36gb Can anyone explain this? Does the "size" show larger as this is uncompressed, but it's really only taking 3.36gb up? Also, 3% of 74.5gb should be more like 2.2gb - can anyone help explain this? Did I adjust the wrong registry key? Thanks.

Memory utilization by IE7
by Guest Rajiv K Khandelwal- 4 replies

After installing the security updates last week on my XP node, I.E. 7 utilizes 96-98% of CPU memory when two or more tabs are open for browsing. As suggested in the newsgroup, scan disk and defragmenter have been run without any benefit. If only one tab browsing is running then every thing works fine. Have others also experienced this problem and what is the solution? Thanking you in anticipation. Rajiv K. Khandelwal
