Hi: I have a Sony desktop VGC-RA716G with Windows MCE2005 and now it has started to hang up on startup sometimes. It hangs when the icons are loading and leaves the Taskbar somewhat enlarged, but blank. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Col Tom

"Access denied" thru UNC but not mapped drive
by Guest jjjdavidson- 4 replies

On exactly one Windows XP workstation on our network, users are unable to access files by UNC, although they can access them through mapped drives. For instance, P: is a mapped drive for \\Server\Public\. So the paths P:\temp.txt and \\Server\Public\temp.txt point to the same file, by way of the same network share. But "type P:\temp.txt" types out the file, while "type \\Server\Public\temp.txt" displays "Access denied." Folders can be opened by UNC in Explorer or a DIR command, but "List folder contents" seems to be the only functioning privilege. \\Server\Public shares the F:\Public folder on the server itself, so \\Server\F$\Public\temp.txt also p…

Hi Group I am rather perplexed how to configure outlook express so that I can use POP3 mail instead of the webmail. I am currently connected to the internet using GSM cellular phone modem. As its a cellular network and not similar to a land line or cable connection I am at a loss how to configure my mail for this connection. Does anybody have any experience in this area.? Thanks in Advance Roy

NT Backup Utility Output File Size
by Guest MDunigan- 2 replies
I see from several comments on this newsgroup that customers are suggested to reformat large drives at NTFS when the backup job will create output files larger than 4GB. Is it not possible to tell the NTBackup utility to create multiple output files, less than 4GB in size, and just create multiple files for each job as needed? I would really like to use the Windows Backup Utility, as is seems to be faster than third party utilities, but I would like to leave the external disk I am using to hold the backups formatted as FAT32. Also, I would like to occasionally copy the backups to DVD-RW disks for archival, and the 4GB size is great for that.

Hide files of these types?
by Guest JayWalker- 3 replies

Hello. I wish to hide certain file types (not extensions) without having to set the attribute to hidden for each file. There are many files of the same type which I do not need to see but are necessary for the program which creates them. It seems the way to do this is by editing the file type extension in the registry, but I do not know what string or dword value I need. I've tried creating a dword value "hidden" and setting it to "1" and "2" but still nothing. "Attribute" dword value may work but I do not know the hexadecimal value. Hiding "files of these types" was an option on earlier versions of windows but now is non-apparant. Any info…

I've recently changed host provider and I'm having a problem publishing my website. It starts up OK, then I get a box up with: ! 550 file_name: permission denied And if I click on OK, it stops publishing. If I don't click on OK, it doesn't do anything. Does anyone have any idea on what the problem might be? Many thanks

XP / Vista independent boot requirement
by Guest John- 4 replies

Hi I have xp pro on my primary SATA drive. I installed Vista on secondary SATA while keeping primary (xp) SATA off in set-up to keep the two independent. The reason I want the two separate is in-case one partition goes I don't want the other to be effected as well. I have two problems. 1. I can not boot into Vista until I switch off xp disk in set-up which is tedious. 2. I can not access xp drives/partitions in Vista and hence can not copy files across as xp drive is off to get into Vista. What I really need is some sort of boot management that can keep both OSs separate but also allows easy boot selection possibly via a boot time menu. Any re…

I got two XP Home ED. operating systems when I start up my computer, but I only want one. I like to use my wireless keyboard, but because the first XP Home Ed. doesn't start up I would rather take it off considerig I want to aviod future problems & the burden of moving the arrow key down to the 2nd XP Home Ed. option; when I do this I need to use my other key board (not wirelesss)just to move the arrow key down instead of just allowing it to start up on its own. I am physically challenged & it is easier for me to use my wireless keyboard. I want to do this now before I upload other sofware, files, & before I personlize so I do not have to do it…

Error Stop 0X00000007F
by Guest fuji- 2 replies

I understand at this point this error may be caused by drivers from new hardware installed or infection with a avariant of the Sdbot virus. The message I am receiving on start up is: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. I am trying to follow some instructions to reboot in the safe mode, which I understand but cannot log on. Now my PC does not recognize my user ID. Any ideas? -- fuji

DUNZIP32.DLL
by Guest WOLLAM- 4 replies

I am hoping someone can help bring this software back to life. My wife uses a proprietary software (from a vendor handpicked by the company)for her business and recently she has been unabvle to access the program. When she attempts to open it she gets the following message: Could not load DUNZIP32.DLL. When she clicks OK she gets this next message: Access violation at address 7C918FEA in module 'ntdll.dll'. Write of address 00000010. I realize this is generated while trying to access non-MS software, but since it had to do with "dll", something that is way over my head, I thought I'd come here, where I always get the best advice. Thank you all in …

by Guest French731- 4 replies

Getting frustrated, cannot find a similar problem on forums. 1. I reinstalled Windows XP Media Center edition after a hard drive crash. 2. Removed Norton with removal tool. 3. Installed Zone Alarm 4. Installed Avast AntiVirus 5. Installed SpyBot w/Tea Timer 6. Cable Internet -- Very fast Symptom: Whenever I try to download a file, the downloader rips the first half and then just hangs up at a random point. Sometimes I will cancel the download and try again and it will work, sometimes not. The same things happens if I try to download a video, lets say on youtube. If it were a 5 minute video, the bar on the internal player will download half the v…
