Click Shut Down, Long Delay
by Guest Brandon- 9 replies

I have a user that when she clicks shut down at the end of the day, it takes several minutes before her choices of shut down appear (i.e. logoff, restart, standby, shut down) and this also locks up the system till this menu appears. When it does appear and she selects shut down the system takes a very long time to actually shut off. Any suggestions as to what might cause something like this?

Cannot delete very deep directory tree
by Guest tedbaab@gmail.com- 9 replies

Hi everyone, I have an unusual problem: I have a directory that I cannot delete that was created by an accidental backup routine. I have a folder on my K drive called "K: \projects 2007" with about 89mb (3 folders) in in, which was copied by my automated backup (Cobian Backup) into its own directory "K: \projects 2007", creating a loop that nested "projects 2007" folders into themselves, presumably with about 89mb in each tier. Creating: K:\projects 2007\projects 2007\projects 2007\projects 2007\projects 2007\projects 2007... I do not know how deep the directory structure goes, but by the space left on my disk, it looks to be about 433 directories deep (fo…

Hello I had got a big problem. I just byued some new computers to my company and all of them have winXP x64. The other computers have only the winXP version. When I try to share folders on each computer in my network, computer 1 with XP cant get into the folder on computer 2 (WinXP x64) but computer 2 (WinXP x64) can access computer 1 without any problem. Weird? Both are in the same workgroup and both have specified IP-numbers. No firewall. Is there any problems between XP and XP x64? All the computers can access to internet and also print out documents on the printer wich is connected directly to the router. Can anyone help me or have had a simil…

The Stick Keys have activated themselves. When I type 'e' the 'My Computer' window opens and when I type 'r' the 'Run' process starts. The problem is that I did not turn the function on in the Control Panel Accessiblity option. And also it is not set in the Accessibility option so that I can turn it off. Can anyone help me turn the Stick Key option off?

I've just been reading about live cd distros of linux which fit on a single bootable cd. By booting off the CD, you can have a functional version of linux with the popular applications. Are there some reliable, easy to follow instructions on how to complete the same with XP Pro/Home so that I can boot any pc off the CD and have internet access and remote desktop?

Downloads Corrupted
by Guest Bobbyaro- 3 replies

Hi all, I can not download files correctly. I first noticed, using firefox, that I couldn't download anything, I just put this down to a FF bug and just used IE7. IE would download files, and they seemed to be fine, although d/l rates were v slow. Now however, I have been d/l some zip files, and I can not uncompress them as they are corrupted. I have tried d/l them onto another PC and they are fine there, so I know it isn't the files themselves. I even tried some ZIP repairers, and alternate decompressors, but the files are beyond repair after d/l. It is not my router/connection, as they work when d/l to my laptop, but a file d/l to my PC, then trans…

After I partitioned my hard drive, Windows XP activated the default administrator account and now instead of logging into the administrator account I initially created when I first installed XP, it's been booting up into the default administrator account. How do I fix it so I can remove the default admin account and have XP boot up into the one I created again?

I get this error -- There is a problem with the Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. I contacted the authors of Retrospect 7.5. I've tried to install the latest version - error. Their suggestion - unstall version 7.0. Again in the uninstall process the same error. The latest windows installer was downloaded within the past 24 hours. I got this message before the latest version of the installer and after installing the latest installer. I could not uninstall or install in safe mode. I am at a loss. Help is appreciated. Thank you. Fred

Hi, since a couple of months I am no longer able to edit the properties with the mouse right-click. It happens that the system does not responds, and I have to kill the "explorer.exe" process in order to continue to work, so that W-XP closes all Explorer windows. I don't know if it happens because I installed the "Norton 360" or some other software. Because of that, now it is not possible to set some arguments on shortcuts and this is really something I need often for developing software. Any hint from you? Thank you very much for your anzwerz. Whenever I access a folder on my desktop, run a program (most programs) or do almost anything, the Windows installer starts. A box pops up with the message "Windows Installer, starting to install". Nothing ever installs, and when I try to cancel, it takes quite a while for the installer to fully cancel. I searched this newsgroup for the term 'installer' and found a few helpful suggestions such as an Installer CleanUp Utility, which I tried but it did not help. I have to stress that, unlike other similar situations cited in this venue, in my case, simply clicking on a normal folder on my desktop will start the Installer, as will clicking on Recycle Bin, …
