bootvis or similar
by Guest DC Gringo- 3 replies

I used the bootvis utility to troubleshoot long startups some time ago and loved it. While it's optimization technique is apparently built into Windows XP, it gave me a clear and visible graph of what was taking so long so I could disable it if not needed. Microsoft discontinued it but I still have a copy. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work any more. I get an error: "file is not in recognizable format" when I try to open the .bin file it creates. Does anyone know how to get it to run right or have a replacement product that does the same thing? DCG

File Sharing w Password
by Guest Gary Brown- 2 replies

Hi, IIRC, at one time you could set up file sharing with protective passwords. I don't see that anymore. I'm running XP SP2 Pro on one PC, Vista Premium on the other. Turning off Simple File Sharing still doesn't allow passwords. Briefly, I want to full control but only w passwords. Thanks, Gary

Networking with XP and VISTA
by Guest puzzled- 2 replies

I have a wired network consisting of 3 PCs. Network base PC runs XP. Recently, one of the other PCs upgraded to Vista. Despite running network setup etc. on both new Vista PC and the base PC (again) the Vista PC is unable to access the network for file sharing, printing and other tasks. One friend suggested that the Vista PC now wants to override and control the network. Is is possible to have a network with PC running both operating systems and the base running XP? Suggestions? Solutions?

Font and character changes
by Guest K.Sawyer- 0 replies

I work in an office with several workstations. When I open, print, create, etc. a file from one of the work stations, it changes / converts the font size and also it changes / converts the apostrophe ' into an equal sign =. This only happens on one work station. This workstation is running Microsoft Word 2002 SP3 and running Windows XP Professional, Version 2002 SP2. Any ideas? I've tried to reinstall Microsoft Office and that did not help. This has been going on for some time and have no idea the date to use for system restore. Thanks! -- K.Sawyer

Dual boot plus VM-Ware
by Guest Magnus E- 4 replies

I am in the process of migrating to Ubuntu Linux. Right now I have two partitions: one with Windows XP Pro and one with Ubuntu. I wonder if it is OK to install XP as a virtual machine using VM-ware in Ubuntu and still keep the XP partition? Since I will only use either the true XP partition or the virtual machine at the same time, I figure that my one XP License should be enough? Is that correct?

Windows Explorer problems
by Guest johnhb- 2 replies

When I try to access My Computer I intermittently get a Windows Explorer error... Windows needs to close.. etc and sometimes also a Dr Watson Error. This is most prevealent when i access My Computer either from the desktop or the Start menu. I also get the same windows error, but less often, when attempting to do a Sendto from a folder. I get the same error when I type in a URL into Windows IE address bar or try to edit a URL, but again not every time. I have run several anti-spyware program and several antivirus programs but nothing is revealed. Hope someone has a possible solution.

Installing XP Media Center
by Guest Dennis- 5 replies
I purchased a new PC with Vista Home Premium last week. Internet explorer 7 quit working and the only way to repair it is to re-install Vista. Problem is that Vista will not reinstall. When I try to reinstall I get a message that says my PC is not suitable for Vista and then it restores the broken version. So I want to purchase a full version of XP Media Edition and install it on the PC (I hate to let a $1700 pc just gather dust). My question is; if I format C to clean it of all traces of Vista, will the DVD drive still be able to read the XP CD to install it? If not, how do I install XP and get rid of Vista? Thanks, Dennis dennis_crowley@charter.n…
