WMP screen captures
by Guest MoonStar- 1 reply

Does Windows Media Player have an option that allows you to make screen captures? I have this ability on other video programs, but they won't run ..wmv files. Also, is there a version of WMP that allows you to play DVDs? I downloaded a trial version of CyberLink DVD Suite, but I don't really like it. Would like an alternative. Thanks.

Application Processing Time
by Guest Bubba- 3 replies

G'day. I have a general question regarding running apps. If one has TWO applications open (say Adobe and Word), both are maximized and Word is the app that has focus and adobe is behind Word. Does the processing time (CPU allotment) for adobe diminish? Also, if I minimize one app (say Adobe) does this mean that the front running app (i.e. the one that is maximized) have or receive more processing time? I understand the priority strategy of running apps and that one can change them (carefully of course). Using Task Manager, I cannot see any loss of processing time (cpu utilization) for either app. I hope these make sense. BTW: The reason I ask…

Startup error message
by Guest thadmack511w- 1 reply

This just started out of the blue. Upon starting WinXP Pro this week i get an error message that says the PC can't find "C:\windows\system32\oqfaxdot.dll." Click "OK" or cancel and all desktop icons/shortcuts disappear. The only thing I can do at that point is CTRLALTDElete. It shows I am logged on but not much else. I've searched my XP operating system disc to no avail. Anybody know of a solution? Searching Microsoft knowledge has been fruitless -- thanks in avance

default sound device keeps changing
by Guest M.Hockings- 1 reply

Is there a way to prevent XP from changing the default sound device? In my machine I have two internal sound cards a USB sound device and a bluetooth headset. I want to be able to use the sound cards for specific purposes but it seems that XP will decide to make the last found sound device the default even though I specifically set another as the default. Having to reconfigure the devices up every time the USB or BT device connects (and gets set to be the default) is extremely frustrating. For the most part the applications that use other than the expected default sound device retain their settings just fine. The problem is with games and whatnot tha…

I'm trying to learn when to use the various tools within windows xp for boot or HD issue. Assume I've done a reboot, booting into safe mode/reboot and updates are current, with no new apps or hardware have still not resolved a generic boot issue. In what order should i use the following tools and what would be a typical symtom to indicate the tool vs another tool? 1. Last known good config. 2. Last Restore point? Does i386 need to be local. 3. System File Checker (SFC)? Does i386 need to be local. 4. Check Disk. 5. fixboot cli only. 6. fixmbr cli only

Hello, one of my users at the office installed the Windows-based Airport utility to manage Apple wi-fi access points. It seems that it disables File and Printer Sharing by default. Can you confirm that? We tried and uninstall Airport, but after each restart the file sharing service returns unflagged in the LAN Properties panel. Is there any way to fix that (without reinstalling Airport)? Thank you, /_urka

"Please Wait" message and wallpaper picture disappears
by Guest Gary Roach- 1 reply

I've got a customer with a machine that produces a stylized "Please Wait" message a few minutes after boot-up and the background fades to gray. It seems like the windows interface style is being changed but there's no other evidence of this. Also, the desktop wallpaper picture disappears soon after boot-up. No big deal just a little annoying. If anyone can help with this it would be appreciated. -- Gary Roach ADB Services

How to add a new screensaver in Windows XP?
by Guest Femke- 2 replies

I would like to add a new screensaver which I downloaded from the net to my screensaver list in Windows XP. The screensaver I downloaded was zipped and I initially extracted the file (executable) to the C:/Windows/System folder but this does not alter the list of available screensavers in the Display Properties/Screen Saver window. I have searched my C disk for *.scr files to identify the right directory, but found none! All instructions I find are about changing to another (available) screensaver or using a picture show; standard features of Windows XP. How can help me install this screensaver (with the appropriate file extention)? I should be simple bu…
