Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
by Guest George Valkov- 3 replies

I noticed that when I try to open a picture from my desktop, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer shows immediately, indicating the "Generating Preview..." status for about 7 seconds, and there is extreme disk activity all the time. After that the picture is displayed. The same happens every time I click on a picture file, to open it. I decided to investigate what is wrong, so I used Sysinternals Process Explorer to pause the process during "Generating Preview...", then I examined the stack, but only found genuine Microsoft DLLs, the active thread was using some file system filter which was causing the disk activity. Then I examined what files were accessed…

Failure to Reinstall Windows XP
by Guest Tom _Hyde- 5 replies

Since my original posting seems to have disappeared I am sending another copy with the subsequent contribution. 21/08/07 To date, the reinstall of XP on my Inspiron has only been partially successful, that is, I can still use it but the programs which needed to be repaired do not function. These are the problems: 1. The Autorun feature on the system disk failed to download the C:I386 folder. (I have since installed I386 manually). 2. Internet Explorer was only partially downloaded and cannot be used. 3 The Help and Support routine cannot access the internet. 4. The Automatic Update fails to work correctly and about 75 KB's fail to install. …

Winsock provider
by Guest Gomek- 9 replies

Hello. One of the users of my computer told me that when she went to go online, she got an error saying there was a problem with the winsock provider catalog and she went through the troubleshooting section and ended up resetting the DCHP address then restarted the computer. Everything seems to be working fine, but I noticed the new IP address that was leased to me is 192.x.x.x instead of the 65.x.x.x that road runner uses. I can't think of why this happened in the first place, I'm real good about keeping spyware and such off my system. Is this something I need to be concerned about? Thanks in advance.

Hi All, Just have a quick question. I have a legitimate Windows XP installation CD, but I lost the CD cover and do not have the CD Key noted down. Is there a way I can still use the CD to install Windows XP on a computer? I do not have Windows XP installed on any other computer using the same disc (if I did, I could have obtained the CD key using such applications as "ViewKey"). Can anyone help? Nikhil

Computer powers off for no reason
by Guest Sean- 1 reply

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, AMD 64 3400+ with 1.5GB memory. As of late it has had an issue where upon booting into Windows it would just power off. Here in Minnesota we have had some rather warm weather, so it is hotter than usual, and the room I am usually in does not get the AC well. So I looked at temp being a factor. I used a program that monitored CPU temp and saw that it was in the acceptable range of 42C. Sometimes the minute I log in as it loads it shuts down. Other times I can actually log in, then after a minute or so of doing NOTHING it just shuts down. I had a test copy of Vista installed that I only logged into once months back. I t…

TCP/IP (pathping) works, IE7 fails
by Guest Thufir- 6 replies

Following <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067/>, pathping works fine, returns results for "pathping google.com", so the "internet" is up and running, but IE7 won't display a web page. There's nothing wrong with the TCP/IP stack. What's a good approach to getting IE7 to load web pages? I've disabled the windows firewall; the pc is riddled with virus's. thanks, Thufir

by Guest lolerie@gmail.com- 2 replies

I have Windows Home XP and am unable to shut down my computer properly without and error stating "end program card read monitor for 9360 4.5 " then "program not responding" . Although this error shows up when I try to research it , I can't seem to find an explanation or a solution . I'm unable to restore back to a specific date prior to seeing this error. I have recently installed simpletec's storage drive for backup and have removed this program thinking it was the problem , but still I haven't had any success. Any suggestions? Thank you. JM
