Hello, A friend recently had a virus on their computer and all files on the C Drive are now set to writeable. Wondering which files should be set to " Read only" There is no file sharing, nor multiple users, but only 1 user of the computer. I have tried to find a list of which files should be "Read only" but am having difficulty. Many thanks

PhotoGallery
by Guest Tony De Shiro- 3 replies

Everytime I boot up the computer I get a screen that says the system is trying to load PhotoGallery. If I do nothing and let the system run thru its paces, I get a screen that says that the information is on a disk that is not in the system, and instructs me to put the disk in. I load my HP Photosmart 2600/2700 cd and PhotoGallery loads. If I don't put the disk in I have to click on cancel three times to get rid of the screen. Everytime I reboot the computer I have to go through the process all over again. Any thoughts on what causes this, and more importantly, how do I get rid of it? I downloaded the latest software/upgrades from HP but that didn't …

System does not boot - URGENT
by Guest KDawg44- 10 replies

Hi, I have an XP system that suddenly will not boot up. It gets as far as the Windows XP screen, then goes blank, and nothing. I tried to boot into safe mode and it stopped at the file MUP.SYS. I booted into the recovery console using the WinXP CD and tried a chkdsk /R c:\. THis finished after quite some time and did not help. I then tried to replace MUP.sys with the one from the CD. Same. Then I tried DISABLE MUP and then it stopped at the file right before MUP (NDIS.sys). Reinstallation is not an option here. Any ideas on what I can do? Is there a way to run sfc from the recovery console? Thanks.

Aloha all. I have a jpg pic that I want to use as wallpaper, but XP will not load it, or even recognize it. When I do R-Click on the desktop, and go through Properties/Desktop, it will not even show the name of the pic (Mountain). However, I can see it and load it in other progs? Do I need to resize or something (it is 717x480)? How can I use it? Many thanks.

XP Pro taskbar hight problem
by Guest ferrymanr- 4 replies

I have two installations of XP Pro, both at SP2:- 1. Laptop 1024x768 LCD screen. Upgraded from Win2K. 2. Tower system 1024x768 LCD screen. Virgin install. On the laptop the taskbar is perfect and about 32 pixels high. Time only shown in corner. Icons are perfect. On the tower system the taskbar is much higher, around 40 pixels. Time and day of week are shown in corner. The icons look very chunky. Both taskbars appear to be set at minimum hight. Any ideas what could be the cause of the difference? Thanks Richard

task scheduler: run when logged in
by Guest ramzi.audeh@gmail.com- 1 reply

I had been successfully using jt.exe to schedule tasks from my Vb app. Suddenly it stopped working under XP when using the "Run when logged in" option. When I check the status to see why it didn't run, it says "SCHED_E_ACCOUNT_INFORMATION_NOT_SET". I'm wondering if an XP update came out which killed that functionality? I tried using schtasks but that doesn't not even have that option, so I'm required to enter a password or run as SYSTEM. I tried the Win32_ScheduledJob API also, but that doesn't give me the ability to do it either. Is there currently any way to schedule a task from a VB application and have it run when logged in (not requiring a password)? …

stopping a batch file when an error occurs?
by Guest yawnmoth- 2 replies

Say I have the following *.cmd file: @echo off cd some_directory cd .. If I run it and some_directory exists, nothing will happen - I'll be in the same directory as before. If, however, some_directory doesn't exist, it'll take me back to the parent directory. My question is.. how can I change this behavior? How can I make it so that if some_directory doesn't exist, it doesn't do "cd .."? Maybe I could do some sort of if statement and do the "cd .." conditionally?

What Is "cisvc.exe"??
by Guest Dale Franks- 5 replies

According to my AntiSpyware/AntiVirus logs, a file named "cisvc.exe" is attempting to launch (it was blocked) a file named "cidaemon.exe", every 5 minutes for the past 2 weeks!!! I've run a full scan with the latest spware and antivurus definitions, totally emptied all "Temp" files, History ... everything. Nothing came up. I even did a full search of the registry for even a hint of either file name! Again, nothing! Nothing in the "StartUp" folder. Checked everything via the "run/msconfig" command ... nothing out of the ordinary is loading on bootup How can I find out what program these 2 files are associated with or why the are attempting to launch?? …

Hello, I created a windows toolbar and want to give a name to each item on the tool bar, but can't see where to change the default url name (when it is an internet short cut) .. e.g. I made a short cut for the NY times and want it to show NY times when I move the mouse pointer over its icon (I currently see its url) . I can "name" icons for programs which reside on my pc, but not for Internet links. Is there a way to do what I want? Any help would be much appreciated. Abay

Quick Launch
by Guest McDermotts- 2 replies

Sorry if this has been covered here a million times, I just can't figure it out. This computer is new to me, old machine ran Win 98se. I always had a one touch button on lower r side of taskbar to open IE or OE, Cannot figure ouot how to do this on Win XP machine. Also, like a lot of people, I HATE change. I could not get used to the look and feel of IE 7, so went back to 6, which suited all of my needs. I read that there is a way to make IE 7 looks like 6, but am I better off just using the older version? Lastly, so I won't have to keep asking dumb questions here, how aboout a point in the right direction for a site or two that may be helpful to …
