To clean up and get of rid of the stuff that system would not let me get rid of, I am trying to re-install Windows XP with the original CD that I installed my current system more than 4 years ago. I did activate the Windows however I did not register. During the re-install process, Microsoft asks me whether I accept the terms of the licensing agreement, however, when I enter that "I agree" the system does not accept the input or responds to it. It only lets me "Reject" the terms in which case the installation stops. The only changes that I have made to the system are changes to the memory, and updates to the Motherboard and the DVD Burner BIOS's. Does any…

by Guest Daniel- 5 replies

Hi I have XP Pro, I recently did a format and install of the OS, I have installed all updates and have Defender and the firewall running. Today I went to create a restore point and got this message "System Restore was unable to create a restore point. Please restart your computer and run System Restore again" When I did reboot and tried again I got the same message. I did look in the knowledge base and found a fix but only for Windows ME. Any idea how to fix this, I do not have any Highpoint Drivers installed. thanks Daniel

I've read all that time and my ability will permit about the MS .NET Framework, but I still don't understand it and I don't find answers to my problems. I had to install MS.NET when an upgrade to my ATI display driver required it. Before installing this software I had the usual set of 'user folders' defined in my Win XP system, in 'Documents & Settings': Administrator All Users <user defined> and Default User (hidden folder) But after installation of .NET I have these ADDITIONAL folders in Documents & Settings: All Users.WINDOWS <user defined>.<computer name> Default User.WINDOWS (hidden) Local Service (hidden) Local…

Search internet for drivers
by Guest Menno Hershberger- 4 replies

I just got done wiping and restoring XP Pro-SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400 for the second time around. The machine has a sound card and a Pinnacle card that did not come with it. They show up as Unknown Devices. Yesterday when I did this, I right clicked the devices, clicked update driver, and Yes, allow to connect to the internet. It worked and found all the drivers just fine. TODAY, I made the mistake of not having the LAN drivers installed, and it plugged away awhile and gave up. Now I have got the internet connection going again, but when I try to update the drivers over the internet in device manager, it won't search the internet anymore. It just immed…

Symantec Go Back causes blue screen of death
by Guest Daisybookworm- 3 replies

I had Go back 2007 installed in a Windows XP Pro system. It started to malfunction and technical support advised me to uninstall it using add/remove and Norton Clean Up tool. This resulted in a blue screen system crash that had corrupted Windows XP Pro. Symantec Technical Support said I had to contact Microsoft Technical Support - $80 up-front-fee if I had proceeded with them. The system would not boot from the XP disk. nor the Symantec Recovery disk. When reinstalling XP on Drive :C out of necessity, Windows corrupted the partitioning on a separate hard drive. I had to spend $500 to recover data from the second hard drive. The problem started by Go Back …

Fat32 drive unable to see
by Guest jrine- 3 replies

Hi, I have a Western Digital 10.2 gig Hard drive formated Fat32 that was the only drive on a win98 machine. I need to get the data off of it. I put the drive in my winxp machine as a slave to the master and booted up the xp machine. Windows see's the drive and the Drive Management sees it as active and healthy, but no drive letter is assigned, resulting in not being able to access the drive to recover the data. I have tried installing it as a secondary master removing all drives but the primary which has xp installed on. Ive tried to bring it up using a usb to IDE adapter and still its shows up but no access/drive letter. I would try to make it NTFS but…

Vista does not boot from second drive
by Guest John- 4 replies

Hi I have win xp pro on my primary SATA drive. I installed vista on secondary drive while the primary xp drive was switched off in the set-up, so the two installs are completely separate. My problem is how to boot in win of my choice at start-up. If I start normally it goes into xp. If I press F12 (its a dell pc) it gives me choice of cd or hard drive boots. Selecting hard drive boot takes me into xp. The only way I can go into Vista is to switch off primary cp disk in set-up. Is there a solution for this dual boot problem? Thanks Regards

System restore not working
by Guest Matty- 10 replies

I upgraded from WinXP Home SP2 to WinXP Pro SP2. Just before I upgraded, I created a restore point. So, up to that time I know System restore was working. After upgrading, - when I click on System Restore in the Control Panel, it says "System restore has been turned off by group pollicy. To turn on ST, contact your system admin." When I right click on My Computer to get to System Properties, there is no System Restore tab. When I go to Services - System Restore Service, the status says "stopped". I then select either Auto, Manual and then click Start. In both cases, I get "Could not start the SR Service service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access…

External drive issue with Windows
by Guest Dave Neve- 2 replies

Hi When I play a film on my new external hard drive, the image freezes but when the film is copied onto an internal hard drive, there are no problems. As the drive seems to be working ok otherwise, I reckon I have a Windows problem and that my connection is USB 1 and not 2 I don't actually know for sure cos in a recent post, I explained that although I had installed a USB 2 4 ports card, Windows still seemed to be using USB 1 drivers. For the moment, I'd like to know if a USB 1 connection could be the cause. Thanks for any help Dave Neve
