Spoolsv.exe is acting up and I can't print
by Guest msk_30339@yahoo.com- 10 replies

My mother is running WinXP SP2 on her computer with a local printer attached. Everything worked great until a few days ago, when the printer stopped working. (According to her, she didn't do anything new, didn't install anything, etc). After some poking around, I found that spoolsv.exe was using all of the local resources. I stopped the service, cleaned out the files in the C:\Windows\System32\Spool \Printers folder and restarted the service. The process came up with no problems, using almost none of the CPU. But as soon as I tried to print something, we got the same problem. The document doesn't print, and it sits in that folder, with the service chewing …

Taskbar Help
by Guest H20S- 3 replies

Does anyone know a way to completly REMOVE the taskbar? not just hide it? I have heavily customized my desktop with OSX-like icon bars and would like to remove the taskbar completely from my desktop, similar to stopping the explorer.exe process. I have minimized it and used auto-hide, but both leave a small 4 or 5 pixel line at the bottom of my screen that just bugs the crap outta me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did a re-install of XP. Now our scanner won't work. We never installed software that came with the scanner and it worked fine with other software. Any suggestions? The manufacturer (Umax Astra 2000U) doesn't have any up to date drivers unless you purchase and then they don't guarantee that they will work!! thanks JT

Windows Firewall Exceptions
by Guest Simon- 3 replies

I run XP SP2 and IE7. Having looked at all the forums I understand that the Exceptions tab in Windows Firewall should have 4 pre-set entries and that only the Remote Assistance one should be ticked/checked. However, my PC has a fifth entry which is ticked by default -" Network Diagnostics for Windows XP ". Can anyone advise please where that one came from and whether it should be unchecked or even deleted as an entry altogether. Many Thanks

XP error messages
by Guest Mike X- 3 replies

When double clicking on Printer Preferences or Properties, I get the following message: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. After clearing that message I get this: Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried SFC/Scannow from the command line, but that didn't help. Also, when double clicking System or Power in the Control panel, I get the following message: RUNDLL An exception occurred while trying to run... Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Full screen game loses focus - minimizes automatically.

Hi. I posted this in the Games forum also, but it's a problem I'd like to fix sooner rather than later.. I'm playing Colin McRae Rally 2 on my XP laptop, it plays in full screen mode but every couple of minutes or so it resizes down. It's very annoying as it stops the game everytime it happens. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g161/willlloyd/errorcmr2.jpg That's a link to a picture of the frozen game. I have done Spyware checks, closed all applications but I don't know what else I can do to fix. Please help me! Thanks, Will -- Cheers Will http://www.wrc3f.tk

All these are is some mp3 files in folders. I even tried using a program called killbox, but no luck. Is there something else out there that will do the trick? Have tried everything up my sleeve. Thanks in advance for any help or input you can provide!

Hi, In trying to diagnose why my virus scan takes so long, I discovered that I have a folder documents and settings/user account/application data/microsoft/protect that contains 1.1 million files! It takes over an hour just to list the contents in Windows Explorer. Anybody know what these files are for and can I delete them? Thanks Jan in Vancouver Excuse me if this was a double post but my previous attempt at posting dissappeared when I logged in.

Using a laptop as a second monitor
by Guest Nathan Sokalski- 2 replies
As most of us know, Windows XP allows you to have multiple monitors (even though not many people use this feature). I have a desktop and a laptop, both with Windows XP. Is there any way to use the laptop as a "second monitor" without purchasing any special software? As far as connecting the two, I have an extra network card installed in my desktop, or would be willing to buy a double-ended USB cable (I can't think of any other good ways to connect the two). If anybody knows of a good way to do this, please let me know. Thanks. -- Nathan Sokalski njsokalski@hotmail.com http://www.nathansokalski.com/

administrator account on XP Home...
by Guest GO- 20 replies

Hello, I have just completed setting up XP Home for a friend and am just looking for some insight regarding the Administrator account as this was my first opportunity to setup the Home version of XP. During my configuration of the system I had noticed that I was locked out of the Administrator account, I believe the error message mentioned something about the system policies preventing this. This in itself is not really a problem as I just created my own "administrator" account. Is there anyway that someone could gain access to the system using the Administrator account or is the only way to use it is in Safe Mode? I just want to ensure that the computer i…
