Mouse pointer freezes and chkdsk recovery console?
by Guest Dave Candi- 1 reply

My screen freezes on a regular basis? The mouse pointer freezes and i have to cold boot the machine and run chkdsk in recovery console? I've partitioned my pc so have to do this /r on multiple drives. This is becoming a hassle. Chkdsk finds errors and fixes them and the pc is fine for a short while after until the problem reoccurs? Can I copy recvoery console onto the hard drive? I know theres a way of doing this but can't remember exaclty how? Will this speed up the use of recovery console? Will i be prompted for recovery console at boot up? Any help most welcome

by Guest RJK- 8 replies

Does anyone know anything about the "programmed life" that's allegedly in Epson printers. i.e. I've heard the odd story about after x no. of pages they "die" Just had another lady tell me her 18 month old D68 is telling her that it's, in as many words, "died" I've just been Googling to try and find out how and if one can reflash the firmware in Epson printers. TIA regards, Richard

Forward Slash
by Guest Barry Karas- 2 replies

11:25 AM 8/24/2007 The forward slash (/) is quite popular. For example web pages' addresses begin with "http://". (My quotation marks.) Yet the forward slash is not acceptable for many computer functions. For example the slash cannot be used for Windows Explorer names. Is there a way to make the slash acceptable? If so, how can I make the forward slash acceptable? Thank you, Barry Karas

svchost.exe is a virus! HELP!
by Guest Devonshire- 4 replies
I am getting desperate here. Symptoms: svchost.exe pops up before i can even log on. Once logged on the svchost error messages are persistent. Opening "My Computer" produces an scvhost.exe error pop up and the flashlight starts searching, maybe it opens in 30-45 seconds. Activating ANY and ALL apps triggers scvhost.exe errors. Any file saving or opening in ANY and ALL apps causes a 30-45 second delay with a svchost.exe error. I have updates all the recomended Windows Update fixes, patches, windows installer, etc. as recommended by Microsoft I purged al cookies, temp files, ie history, etc. I spent maybe 4 hours with Alienware tech support …

XP Home: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file
by Guest athompson- 0 replies

NOTE: Yes, I posted this somewhere else a few minutes ago. Just blame the MS->news site and let it go... I worked on two PC's in the last 2 weeks with this problem. The first was Thursday the 14th, the second was earlier this week. I sent them both home working after doing a dirty/repair install of Windows XP. I just got a call from one of the users(who has dedicated internet access) and the problem is back as of this morning. Looking in Add/Remove programs, it seems Windows downloaded a slew of updates and installed them early this morning. As before, the programs run OK in safe mode. These are both XP Home systems. This problem affects N…

Multiple displays in Windows XP: How to change default arrangment?
by Guest Curious1- 5 replies
I have a screen and laptop that I want to run together. The screen sits above the laptop and for convenience I'd like the default virtual arrangment to mirror the physical layout, so that when I plug it in, I can simply move the mouse up or down to the other screen. Does anyone know how to do this in Windows XP?

Never ending install loop with Roxio
by Guest pelleindc- 2 replies

Hi, Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. Last week I ran a registry cleaner and software uninstall. Ever since then there is a nasty never ending loop. Immediately after startup a window pops up stating: 'Please wait while Windows configures Rexio Media Manager' After a while i get following error message: 'Unable to find a certtficate file' I click ok and the 'Please wait....' continues with 'Gathering required information'. At that time msiexec.exe takes 100% of the CPU utilization. Tried ending the process in taskmgr but that jus retarts the process. Tried the cancel button in the window as well but that only changes the status me…

Re-partitioning system drive without having to rebuild?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 10 replies

New PC. 40-gig "C" drive. System + Apps < 10 gigs. I'd like to re-partition the device so there's 30 gigs for "C" and 10 or whatever's left over for a "D" drive. Seems like last time I tried this by making an image, re-partitioning, and then trying to restore the image, the image utility didn't buy it bco the size discrepancy. Dunno if re-partitioning it "as-is" is possible, but it sounds like a bad idea. Anybody have a suggestion? -- PeteCresswell

is there a way that i can make windows XP automatically reactivate a disk rather than i have to go into the disk management and do it manualy. i mean windows can detect the connection of the disk so it would be nice if it could also reactivate it.

How can I useing the registry, force a particular theme and menu style on... I am in a corporate enviroment, NON AD, all local accounts using novell... (yuck) For instance, I have a PC that the Classic start menu has been enabled by the user. How can I force this to be the XP style menu? It was enabled by going by right clicking on the task bar, then picking properties and clicking the start menu tab. They keep picking the Classic menu option there.... It is not applied using gpedit.msc in the administrative templates. Also would like to force the XP style theme as well... Which registry keys would I need to look at? To force the Start menu opt…

I find this Group and the individuals participating in it, very, very nice and helpfull. thank you. Now I am probably going to sound very dumb but please, bare with me. I own the computer and programs but I am a Family man who shares the computer with my Family. I am the individual who uses the computer the most. My mother, a senior citizen, very rarely uses the computer but I do try to get her to learn and use it. I have other family members across Canada and I try to get my mother to correspond; e-mail, video clips, etc. I also have a daughter who is only with me every couple of weeks,f or the week-end or hoildays. Here is my Question, "Do they…

Searching Dupes file finder for 2 different file sets (!!!)
by Guest Frank Callone- 0 replies
All the duplicate file finder tools I have seen so far allow only to find dupes within the same directory tree or even partition. What I need is a dupes file finder which finds only those dupes which have a twin/copy in one file set (e.g. the recursive directory tree D:\newfiles\*.*) and the other twin/copy in another, different recursive directory tree (e.g. D:\proj\*.*). Dupes within the same directory are of no interest. Does someone know such a "special" dupe file finder ? Frank
