Unable to log on
by Guest Jim Pletcher- 6 replies

In normal mode, or safe mode, when any user apttempts tp log on they get the "loading your settings" message then are immediately logged off. Chkdsk /f (from Ultimate Boot Disk) fixed some errors, but did not improve the situation. Using Fixmbr (from Windows CD) indicates a non-standard configuration and warns of deleting partitions - so I didn't try it. Any ideas?

An install crashed in the middle and now my PC is messed up. When I attempt to run certain programs like deleting Internet history I get "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, Please contact your administrator. " Also, several icons in the Control Panel are missing. One is Add/Remove Programs. I tried to "Switch Users" to Administration but it doesn't recognize the administration password. When I attempted to play an mp3 file, it downloaded a Codex before playing. Media Player 11 won't play an original DVD movie anymore, but it will play an non copy-protected movie. Webroot Spysweeper reported "Specto…

Screen rotation
by Guest Smirnoff- 6 replies
A friend of mine had the classic problem of his screen rotating 90 degrees. I explained that he needed to hit Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow. I went to show him on my machine - and nothing happened! Checked Graphic Properties and Rotation is enabled. Also, the Hot Keys are enabled as well. Not that I want the irritation of having the screen rotate, in fact I never use rotation but I am intrigued as to why it doesn't work. It works if I select it in Graphic Properties>Rotation. My Ctrl+Alt keys work OK as I often call up Task Manager.

repair install resulting eventually in problems...
by Guest RJK- 0 replies

During the small hours of this morning I repair installed XP Home ed. then installed SP3 - and all was lovely. Including the IE7 problem that I've given up chasing down whereby an ebay auction "large photo's" wouldn't completely load. Reboots were much faster - as I said - all was lovely. This mornng boot up is taking AGES, and several icons are missing from system tray ! including the "Power options" icon, which - lastt boot up - I switched off then on to make it appear - and rebooted and it's gone again. Any idea why several hours would make a BIG difference to what was wonderful, and is now awful ? TIA regards, Richard

Dear subscribers I would like to know if it’s possible to configure Windows Desktop Search, in my case version 4, to index web pages as well as drives. The idea is to get a unified search view for most of my company’s documentation which is both as Word documents and web pages (wiki etc)? Thanks, Ola

Windows XP SP3 and missing "Address" field option
by Guest Lasse- 13 replies
Hi I have always added the "Address" field to my taskbar so that I could type in a folder or command etc. directly. After updating my computer with SP3 it totally defaulted my taskbar and now, to my big disappointment, I can see that I can't add the "Address" field to the taskbar anymore. I can understand why MS would create a SP3 with new security settings etc. but why the need for removing a simple thing as this? Does anyone have a solution? /Lasse

worm/virus crash, now cannot get to repair console-keyboard freezes
by Guest Pamela G- 2 replies

My DH was reading his comics on comic.com, when the website closed unexpectedly and a Windows box came up with a message similar to "Your connection was lost, Do you want to restore?" and a Yes and No box. sigh. He clicked on "yes" and all the fun began. The computer started to reboot itself, and couldn't finish the job. What I observed: on boot up sequence when it went to the "Scanning IDE Drives" page, a message pops up that "No drive attached to the Fast Track controller. The bios is not installed", then it goes to the screen to choose a boot option. No matter which option I choose, an error message pops up stating that the System32\Drivers\NTFS.sys f…

I gave my sister in Illinois my computer (two year old Compaq) with Widows XP. She is on line with Comcast cable who gives her the free McaFee Anti-Virus Software. She has been on line for about 3 months and as of a few days ago, she started to get the message in a new window that a trojan was found and she needs to pay $49.99 for a virus removal ......she ran Mcafee and it said a "fake alert" was detected but did not remove it. Now it seems she is getting messages saying Microsoft has found 47 viruses on the hard drive and she needs to pay for that protection......she cannot even log on anymore as as soon as she boots up, that window pops up and she can…

Security Updates NOT waiting
by Guest bryan- 24 replies

I am running win xp sp2 on a Dell 9100 Dimension with IE7, Kaspersky Internet Security7, Spywareblaster and LinkScanner. I am up-to-date on all critical MS security updates. Last week I was notified of the Windows July security updates, which I downloaded successfully. This week I was again notified that updates were ready to download, but when I went to MS security updates, I did not see any critical updates waiting. I have checked each of the past 3 days and there are still no critical updates pending from MS despite the icon in systray telling me that updates are waiting. Any ideas? I have always had non-critical updates available (including SP3) but h…

Automatic Screen Refresh on 'Net & in Ofc Professional
by Guest eddie- 0 replies

Recently I have had my IE windows slowed from one process to the next with an Automatic Screen Refresh. System response is doing something in background as my next window is finally activated. Could be at ONE Website using it's multiple windows and have the Auto Refresh happen. When in Word97 or 2000, program will load and Auto refresh screen before I get a chance to Open a File. Know it is going to happen because System Bogs down with NO response from any open windows or program selection on my part. So, what is happening and what can be done to resolve this. At times I will have 2-5 windows open but never had the problem in the past. FYI, I sh…

IE7 Information Bar missing
by Guest Glenn Morgan- 10 replies
[Cross-posted from Setup & Deployment] A couple of days ago, I noticed that the "Open in new tab" option was missing from the right-click menu for links on one of my PCs. One of the suggested solutions was to apply the defaults for security and privacy options. When I applied these options, the information bar stopped appearing, meaning I now can't run ActiveX when prompted, as I don't see the prompt. I have tried the following suggestions to resolve this, but nothing has worked so far: - adjusting Tools/Internet Options/Security (Automatic Prompting etc.) - OLEFix and probably others that I can't remember. I don't want to leave me system at a low…

Weird happenings after installing 2nd hard disk
by Guest John H Meyers- 1 reply
After my previous WinXP Pro computer's power supply failed, I installed its hard disk as a second drive in a newer computer to copy my files from it; that disk became the "F:" drive on this new computer, while Windows continues starting up from the original "C:" drive of this new computer, as usual. The weird observations are: o Portions of the old computer's "Registry" have sometimes shown up in "Regedit" (although not at this moment), with some unusual "branch" names containing the drive letter "F" (I wish I had written down the precise names, but too late now), as though that drive's registry had been automatically "attached," against any wish…

MountPoints2

Could someone tell me what the keys below are about? My daughter started to download a game; I stopped it before the installation and it said that it would remove the installation files. However, I now find these keys referring to the game OniNet Kid, in the right hand panel. I did a Google and found lots of mentions of MountPoints2 connected to trojans and viruses. Any ideas? ping with dscp windows ignore ecn-ce field
by Guest Dan- 0 replies
when I ping from machine A to B: >ping 121.1.1.1 -v 0x47 windows keeps delivering the ToS field as 0x46 in the IP datagram. This is what Wireshark reported. However, I didn't have any problem when pinging from a linux box. It appears that the 2nd Hex will always be round off to the lower even number when pinging from windows machine, e.g: 0x27 becomes 0x26 0x15 becomes 0x14 0xA3 becomes 0xA2 and so on.... When looking closely in Wireshark, this is this due to the last bit of the QoS because it's related to ECN-CE ....whatever, this means....does anyone know how can I turn on this function? So I can set the traffic all the way from 0 t…

WinXP Pro + Fax Console + Caller ID
by Guest x- 4 replies
Hello, i been breaking my head over this. What type of modem does Windows XP Pro. Fax Services require in order for Fax Console to recognize and fill in the "Caller ID" field? 1. i have tried 3 different modems (generic, generic, robotics) 2. all three different modems recognize the caller id when using AT+VCID=1 string, via HyperTerminal 3. in modem Control Panel, the string AT+VCID=1 is typed in the Advanced tab "Extra initialization commands" but, yet Fax Console will not display the caller id. Any guidance or ideas are much greatly appriciated.

How do I delete the "full system restore" backup folder in XP?
by Guest cedrick- 9 replies

I performed a "full system restore (with backup)" system recovery on my laptop, which is running Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP3. Everything is fine now, but I have an 8 GB backup folder that I no longer need or want. I tried to delete it, but the system prevented it. I then tried the instructions that I found on this forum, entitled "How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP." Here is what I did: Booted in safe mode, highlighted the folder, right-clicked, selected properties security tab advanced owner tab, selected administrator checked "replace owner of sub containers & Objects" (or at least that's the gist o…
