Can I install all XML updates in sequence?
by Guest Lurka- 0 replies

I have a number of XP SP2 machines to be updated via SMS. Because it is difficult to sort out which are using XML 4, 5 or 6, is it advisable to install all 3 patches in sequence, regardless of the actual configuration? What could go wrong? Thank you, /_urka

Uninstall obsolete COM ports/devices
by Guest Gannis- 6 replies
Hi, How do I uninstall a non visible COM port device/driver? Whenever I plug in a USB2serial converter a new virtual port is created and the COM port number increases. Every new combination of converter type and USB connector used gives a new increasing number. The Device Manager only lists - and allows uninstalling - devices currently in use/connected. Is there a way to uninstall the device formerly called e.g. COM37 without having access to the hardware used when the device was installed. Thanks.

Windows Update
by Guest Simon- 3 replies

I run XP SP2 and IE 7. I ran M/S Update and it offered me an optional hardware update - Network Adapter Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet NIC dated June 2007. I installed it but found that I lost the network connection when awakening the PC from standby (from cold OK !). So I rolled back to previous driver - fine. However, M/S Update tells me that the update is still on my PC but it is classed as uninstalled. I would like to delete it as there is no point keeping it given that it doesn't work. Unfortunately, having looked all over, I can't find its location (unusually it doesn't have a KB number either). Can anyone help please.

by Guest Daddio- 3 replies

Getting "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". Also getting "Previous fan error" message and did note the fan stops and starts. tried another duplicate fan on this Dell 8250 and it worked, but still got the "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". Changed the system battery, same issue even after resetting the date and time. Going to try slaving the HDD on another computer, but is it possible the loss of the fan damaged the processor? Daddio - TIA

Re: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898628/ Quote To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on the computer, follow these steps: 1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following file: Msi.dll This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder. 2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties. 3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number. .. If the version number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v1) installed. .. If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed. Unquote. Okay, I right-clicked Msi.dll, clicked Properties: General- Type of f…

Missing Charts
by Guest Ben Stevenson- 3 replies

On a daily basis I go to Yahoo Finance to read articles on the Stock Market in view of my stock investments. Often the articles would display the charts of the stocks in between the paragraphs and there could be anywhere between three to five charts shown. But today I am unable to view the charts. The articles are there alright, but where the charts should be in each case is only a black outlined rectangle with a red "X" on the top left corner in a black outlined square. What could have gone wrong? Thanks

problem when I press Win+E
by Guest Spoon2001- 1 reply

When I press Win+E to start Windows Explorer, I get a dialog box with this message: "Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." Explorer starts up anyway, despite this error. If I start Explorer by typing "explorer" in the Run dialog, I don't get that error message. The other Winkey combinations seem to be working properly. Only Win+E seems to be affected. There seems to be something screwy in the way that Win+E is calling Explorer. Somebody suggested running SFC, but that didn't fix this problem. Any ideas?
