svchost NETWORK delay
by Guest General Mailbox- 4 replies

Greetings, After all that is loaded on a fresh boot up seems to be completed (the drive light shows little/no activity), I notice that there is a 25 second delay to make a connection to the Internet. I use a cable modem FYI. I found out that a service called svchost is listed in one of my ~28 processes, but never does connect the computer to the Internet until a program requests for Internet connection, at which point a long delay and time-out errors on auto-up-date software(s) occur. I've gotten into a routine to check my e-mail first using Outlook Express just so that there is a connection when it's needed. Can anyone tell me how to have this process…

HELP! Unable to browse internet
by Guest SmartRoss- 0 replies

I am using a Mad-as-a-fish broadband connection, and I cannot access the internet with certain applications. I have followed the soloution on their site, and it didn't work. I recently installed Visual C# 2008 Express which requires a connection to the internet. It worked fine. Windows Update can function perfectly. However when I use Office XP (Outlook and Frontpage) to access the internet, they can't. Same for IE7. Does anyone know why this has happened, and is there a soloution?

File association quirks
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 2 replies

I frequently discover odd quirks concerning file associations. Here's one example. If I enter ASSOC.avi at a Command prompt, I get the result ..avi=NeroShowTime.Files Yet I have AVI files associated with VirtualDub. And, for all AVI files, the Type column in Windows XP Home folders shows 'VirtualDub'. FWIW, in Folder Options>File Types, I see: Details for 'AVI' extension Opens with: VirtualDub You have customized files with extension 'AVI'. To restore these files to their default type (VirtualDub), click Restore. For a long time the Type column *did* oddly show 'NeroShowTime', despite d-clicking opening the…

Limited User Account problem
by Guest Ranth- 1 reply

Can someone help with this problem, pls? I have a network of 11 Dell PCs running XP Pro. They are all connected to a wireles router. They can all connect to the internet and browse without problem, but only if I have logged in as Administrator and switched user. If not, and the first and only log in is by a limited user account, then the user can't type into the address bar of IE, loses the Start menu and can't view the log off screen long enough to click anything. As a school, I don't want to keep logged in and it means i need to assign admin rights to teachers so they can log in and switch user before lessons. This is a huge security risk as they keep…

by Guest kwng- 1 reply

HI. I have a Dell PC P4 2.8GHz 1Gb DDR using Windows XP home edition. I have attached an USB external drive (maxtor) 60Gb to it for 2 years already. The external drive was formatted in NTFS and has no boot sector (no windows). Yesterday, I got a message from windows saying the drive is corrupted. I can see the drive (L:) in the windows explorer but when I clicked it, a message saying "L:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." When I checked the drive properties, it says file system: raw. When I error check it, nothing happens. When I chkdsk l: , the message I got is "The type of the file system is NTFS. Warning! F parameter not specified. Runn…

taskbar locked out and inaccessible for second user
by Guest don- 8 replies
I run Windows XP Home on a shared desktop - always kept up to date with the latest Microsoft updates. Each of the four family members has their own user account/logon and this has worked fine (more or less) for about five years until last week when we hit the following problem. The first user to log on to the system can still work normally; when a second user logs on (through the logon screen) this second user will see their usual desktop (and be able to use any icons on the main desktop area) - but will have no access to any part of their taskbar. The taskbar will appear as usual at the bottom of the desktop but any attempt to click on the taskbar doe…

"Windows XP startup password"
by Guest Timm- 16 replies

I hope I can make this clear....Several years ago, and I don't remember how I did it, I put a "windows startup password" on both of my XP Home edition computers. I know the password so I'm not trying to break in and get past it. I just want to know how to change or disable it so I can get the kids on to the downstairs computer without me having to go down and type the password everytime they want to use it. Now that they are older (and I have a good filter) I want them to sign in for themselves. I cannot give them the startup password in use now because my computer has the same password and I do not want them to have access to my files. It is not a b…

How do I customize the text in "Open With ->" context menu?
by Guest Lee Grissom- 4 replies
When I right-click on a file and choose the "Open With" submenu, there are a list of five applications. Two of them are my custom application, but all it says is "MyApp" and "MyApp". That's too ambiguous, b/c in reality, one of them is version 1.0 and the other is 2.0. So I'm wondering if there's a way to customize the text that appears to make it easier for my customers to know with version of the application is going to be launched depending on which menu item they clicked on. Thanks, Lee

Wndows update choices
by Guest Joan- 11 replies

Can someone answer these questions please? - Is the "Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML)" update critical and really necessary for all Windows users? Why? I read the description and I didn't understand it well enough to make a choice. I just use my PC for email, photo editing, specialied shopping and scientific information. Not too happy to keep adding XP updates unless they are really useful to the kind of user I am. - I still have IE6. Again I have read on updating to IE7 and do not see too much of a gain in updating unless I am not aware of special benefits. Please comment, I always learn from responses here. Thanks, Joan
