Is boot drive letter significant?
by Guest Ken- 10 replies
Hard drive crashed, took out the old one and replaced with a new one which is configured, as the old one, "cable select". Loaded XP Home via backup CD, but for some reason the new (boot) drive is "H", not "C", and there is no "C" drive per Windows Explorer. Will this be a problem, and if so, how can I get the boot drive to be "C"? The Disk Management tool won't let me change it, of course. Thanks in advance for your help. -- Ken

Dual Boot
by Guest GusGus- 3 replies

Please excuse me if this isn’t the right forum to ask this question, but here goes. I have two hard drives on my computer. The original one, 80 GB, came with Windows XP home installed. I later installed a 120 GB hard drive to backup my files to. What I want to know is this: Is there a way to make both of my hard drives bootable so I can have two Windows XP Home operating systems on the same computer. I understand that this is legal. If it is, I would need step by step instructions on how to do this. I am moderately computer literate! I really appreciate any help I can get on this subject! P.S. If this isn’t the right forum, could you please direct me to w…

Clearing a HD
by Guest RBB- 11 replies

I have just now rearranged my devices on my computer and I added a second HD. I have Window XP Home Edition on a FAT32 Maxtor 38G HD and I add a Fujitus 8G which I had laying around. Now this drive is one that someone discarded but is also is a FAT 32 and has Windows which is "Not registered to me!" on it. Any how, I hooked it up as a Slave hoping to use it to store Image files on. How do I properly format it so I do not have problems breaching some Eula agreement? Thanks for the advice.

Word settings -- where are they?
by Guest LSordo- 8 replies
I searched "word settings" and came up with nothing; if I'm in the wrong forum, I apologize... I recently reformatted my harddrive. I thought I'd backed up everything needed to reinstall and get back to where I was, but there are some things I may have missed. Primarily, the settings in Word that have your personalized toolbar, keyboard shortcuts/macros and the like. I'm not certain that I used the save settings function to create a .opf(?) file, but if not, I'm reasonably certain I have them backed up on an external harrdrive. I can't find them though. If I have them, where would they be? Also, if I do find them, would I be back to pre-refo…

Windows Desktop Search
by Guest p3r3grine- 1 reply

Anyone really familiar with this? Debating about deploying it at work so my employees can search a shared document directory. ISYS wants to charge me $4,200 for their product. It's better, but not $4K better. I am not rolling it out via AD. I only want to give it to a few select secretaries. Question: Is there an easier way to only choose DOCUMENTS for Indexing? I installed it on my PC and had to go through the entire list of files *spacebar, arrow, spacebar, arrow, spacebar, arrow*. All I want to index is /DOC/XLS/PDF/WPD/TXT (and the users email, but that part is simple). I do not want every achived PST, no MP3's or WMA's or files that don't even…

XP Validation Problem after Hdwe Change??
by Guest EW1947@gmail.com- 6 replies
OK, I'm a rookie. I've had my Windows XP system for 5 years (on a Dell Dimension). All was well until yesterday -- the motherboard fried. Big Question: if I replace the motherboard, will I have a problem with XP validation? I've changed some hardware items on the Dell over the past 5 years, but haven't had an XP validation warning yet. Perhaps the motherboard swap may be the last straw. Does Microsoft usually play fair in this kind of situation? Will I likely have to buy a new XP OS?? Thanks. EW

Change xp pro file associations for domain users (SBS 2003) ???
by Guest hpesata- 0 replies
Hi! I recently installed a SBS 2003 server with a few XP Pro clients, before that the clients were using a LINUX SAMBA server. since the change to SBS 2003, the possibility to change file associations is disabled within windows explorer for domain users. I can change associations via the administrator account, but then this assiociation isnt available for the domain-users, this seems to be part of the profile ?! we dont use roaming profiles. any help on how to change existing fiel associations for SBS 2003 domain users on XP Pro would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance! regards, Hans

Blue screen error - floating point state
by Guest Bernie- 4 replies

We have a laptop that has experienced the same blue screen error a few times now (at random). It happens when the laptop comes out of standby mode. The stop error is: "While restoring the previously saved floating point state for a thread, the state was found to be invalid" Tech.info Stop: 0x000000E7 (0x00000001, 0x00000002, 0x00000003, 0x00000000) Any idea what this is referring to and how I can resolve it? Thanks.

Reinstalling MS Hotfix
by Guest Stephen- 1 reply

I ran Belarc Advisor. Amongst the list of MS Hotfixes one (KB901190) was marked as failing verification. It said this needs to be reinstalled. How do I do this? Incidentally, shouldn't Windows Update notice if such a Hotfix isn't properly installed?

Start Bar disappears
by Guest SingularToaster- 2 replies

When I start up Windows XP on my laptop (both normally and in safe mode) The start bar appears for a split second, disappears, and leaves me with the windows background and no icons. i can start spplications by using the task manager (such as word). When they run, there is a gap along the bottom of the screen where the start bar should be. Also, when I minimise, they disappear. We've tried replacing the explorer.exe file in the windows directory - that didn't work (had to do that by accessing \\computername\c$ from another networked computer
