Seires of DVD Problems (Hardware)
by Guest teh XKnight- 2 replies

I am having a lot of problems with my DVD drive. The first problem was that XP MCE simply stopped recognizing that it was even there. The BIOS found it fine and I was able to use and burn DVDs and CDs in Linux (Ubuntu). So, I knew the problem lied with XP. After long searches on the interweb I found that this can occur sometimes after CD/DVD burner software is uninstalled. I hadn't removed any but I had removed several trial DVR programs and one of them used DVD drives to store recoreded TV shows. I used the method on microsoft support to delete Upper and Lower memory from the registry and my DVD drive returned. However my drive is ONLY listed as a DVD…

by Guest sgopus- 4 replies

Under Xp Pro I kept running into Drive is busy when I tried to use the DVD burner under Acronis TI 10, (attempting to create image of partition). It stumped me, until I tried stopping all Roxio services, under control alt DEL, once all Roxio services were stopped I was able to successfully access my DVD Burner using True image. is anyone aware of a fix to Roxio or TI so that services won't have to be manually stopped to use the Burner?

Folder Settings Folders
by Guest Janetb- 0 replies

When I backed up a large number of folders to a second external hard drive, some of the Folder Settings folders were created as hidden while others were not. In the source, they were all hidden files. Is there a universal setting that can unify them all? It would take way too long to sync the whole drive (especially since both the source and the target are hard drives on USB 1 ports), and I would prefer not to have to change each one separately (they are scattered throughout about 30GB of folders and sub-folders). I don't want to leave them that way because sync and backup programs will then say the source and target folders are different when in effect th…

Desktop Icons with white background
by Guest Justin- 3 replies

Hello, I have read through the discussion and I am unable to find a solution. Hopefully someone here will be able to help me out. I'm using a new laptop with Windows XP. Some of the file icons appear correctly, and some appear incorrectly. The incorrect icons have a white background with the regular icon much smaller and in the middle. The correct application opens when clicked and I haven't experienced any problems because of the different icons, but I would like to fix it. All MS Word icons appear correctly, but Excel and Adobe icons do not. I have tried TweakUI and refreshing the icons and it did not help. I have also tried chainging the co…

--XP Pro on a PC, using "Contemporary" and not "Classic" display mode. Neither "Font" nor "Display" in Control Panel shows how to change the icons title text color or font style. I need an unshadowed, solid font instead of the existing hard-to-read outlined & shadowed font.

Re: installing an ipod Hello. I am also having Ipod trouble. I did not receive an installation disc with my ipod shuffle. Did you have it from a previous ipod? Thanks. rrrrr....rrrrr..... The Sound of a CD
by Guest W. Watson- 9 replies

My CD player, which is probably 3 years old, is making an intermittent rrrr sound and won't read some CDs. This is not always the case. It seems to be happening with install CDs for various products that may have been used multiple times. I copied one CD to a fresh CD on another machine, and it's working fine. Will "cleaning" (soap! and water help?) OK, how about a cleaning cloth with some magic ingredient? Maybe the player needs a couple quarts of oil? -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

Desktop screwed
by Guest Dollface1280- 4 replies

So this thing was fine yesterday. Now the picture I had on my desktop is gone. When I go into the Control Panel to choose a different one, the desktop section is grayed out and locked. I cant even scroll down the list; the only thing it will let me change is the desktop color. Going to Documents-MyPictures- Selecting a picture, right-clicking and choosing "Set as Wallpaper" does nothing. But the picture I had comes up, briefly, when the computer is shutting down or booting up. WHY?!?! PLEASE make it stop!

Anomalous startup behavior
by Guest Bill's News- 3 replies

A friend has just dropped off his computer for me to either find his problem or reinstall xp. The situation is that, after power on the user selections (there are 4 users of this machine) appear in reasonable time. However, when selecting a user it takes about 7 minutes (no sweep second on my wall clock), during which time only an empty desktop shows, before the application icons appear on the desk top. If we press Ctrl-Alt-Del immediately, the Task manager appears about 20 seconds or so later with virtually no programs running (about 10 MS modules) none of which is consuming any CPU cycles. Only Sys-idle is counting cycles. Just about when the 7…
