I've just upgraded my internet security, and as part of process had to download a new version of windows installer KB893808-V2-X86.EXE. Now when I start up, windows installer tries to install "Document Viewer" then I am requested to insert CD-ROM, I do not have this. I then cancel and error 1706 appears "no valid source could be found for product Document Viewer. The windows installer cannot continue". When I close this message, another message box appears Microsoft .NET Framework "An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. Click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference …

Installing a link on a desktop from a webform.
by Guest macduder83- 1 reply

Ok, I have to somehow create a link on a users desktop which links out to a portal. The app has to take some input from the user, create the link with an icon. So far I bet you're thinking an exe or simple install project... easier said than done, the website where this thing gets downloaded or run needs to pass an argument to the exe or installer, which will end up being a parameter in said link.... I thought .. ActiveX, however that's a technology that is being phased out and would prefer to avoid using it, not to mention trust issues... If anyone has done anything like this drop me a hint. I have a few ideas thus far but Im wondering if theres a better way t…

How to customize Logon screen
by Guest Chris Barnes- 3 replies

WinXP Pro computer which is joined to a Domain Controller, which means we have the standard Logon window, not the "Welcome" one with icons I would like to be able to customize the Logon box itself so that it has a disclaimer ("use for authorized purposes and authorized users...") in the Logon window itself. Note that this is different than using the reghack to put items in the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/Currentversion/WinLogon/ LegalNoticeCaption LegalNoticeText which puts up a separate window (which users have to hit "ok" to get away from) Alternatively, if modifying the Logon box itself is too hard, using a customized backgr…

Networking 2 XP machines in office?
by Guest Pheasant PluckerĀ®- 1 reply

Hi there, We have a small office with 2 computers. Only one has had Internet access as we had to keep one machine stand-alone to run a custom application that was rendered inoperable as soon as the PC was networked. We no longer have a need to run this custom application and it would make good sense to network the two XP machines together to give the second machine Internet access, share resources, printers etc. We plan to connect the second machine to the existing switch/ADLS router that connects the first machine to the Internet. Both computers are same model Compaq desktops - the machine currently connected to the Internet has been upgraded from XP…

For the past couple of days, every window I open contains this message box: Windows- No Disk. Exception processing message c0000013 Parameters 7cc31d6c 7cc31d6c ..... What does it signify and what can I do to correct or eliminate it? It started when I was accessing PhotoBucket, if that might have any connection. -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200708/1

Skype failure blamed on XP, Vista updates
by Guest HeyBub- 5 replies

"Skype, the internet telephony provider, said today that a massive, simultaneous restart of its users' computers was to blame for the two-day outage its service suffered last week. "Millions of users collectively downloading a routine security update from Microsoft and then rebooting their machines had caused what the company called a "critical disruption", prompting its peer-to-peer network to collapse. " Go ahead, blame Microsoft... http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article2292536.ece

Help!
by Guest markbowman3- 2 replies

I recently had to reformat my hard drive. I reloaded all of the original software and all of the updates. I also re-installed my XP SP2. When I right click on a picture to save in my pictures it will only save as an art file or Bitmap. What setting do I need to change to get them saved as a jpeg? I don't recall having to do anything before to save them as a jpeg but now jpeg is not even listed as a file type option. -- Mark
