Windows updates and DVD
by Guest Jennifer- 5 replies
I sometimes play a DVD which has the option to click on chapters or sections. Recently it started crashing and turning itself off when it got to a certain point in loading the dvd. 2 or 3 times I restored it to a previous point and it would work ok but I think it is after it has installed updates - don't know which one - that it starts to crash again. The restore point that I can now take it back to to know it will work is a restore point of a previous date which I can't remember. Also could it be the new media player as I notice that some people are havng problems with that. I hope someone can help -- Jennifer

cannot update drivers on Sony Laptop
by Guest T5- 4 replies

I have a Sony VGN-A617B Laptop running XP Home, I have noticed that a lot of my drivers are quite old, i checked with driver agent and I am running 50% bad drivers but win update doesn't download updated drivers and the drivers that driver agent recommends don't work either. What should I do? For instance my ATI mobility x600 Graphics card has an installed driver going back to 2005, there is a 2007 driver but for whatever reason I cannot download and install it.

"A Disk Read Error Occurred" Under Windows XP
by Guest Rob- 4 replies
I can't start windows xp professional. I'm getting a message stating "'A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart". My hd is a western digital wd2500jb. Their support site pointed towards the bios or cable as a possible source, I changed the cable and reflashed the bios, still no change. So I'm thinking I need to run chkdsk and fixmbr. I have tried: 0. Attempted System Restore with the XP disk. The system gets hung up (black screen) after it tells you to press a key to load from CD. 1. Loading KNOPPIX, did not work. 2. Loaded an old MEPIS I had around, worked and "mounted" the hard drive (whatever that means) and I was able to navigate, but …

System Restore (HDD Space Config/Behaviour)
by Guest Morgi3- 0 replies
Hi, To reduce the max amount of space system restore uses I reset the reg key at: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore \DiskPercent=3 To 3 as you can see, so my slider for System Restore shows use 3% max of the drive. My drive is 74.5 gb. When I check the size properties of "c:\System Volume Information" is shows as: Size: 6.29gb Size on Disk: 3.36gb Can anyone explain this? Does the "size" show larger as this is uncompressed, but it's really only taking 3.36gb up? Also, 3% of 74.5gb should be more like 2.2gb - can anyone help explain this? Did I adjust the wrong registry key? Thanks.

If a windows XP computer has multiple displays, how can I run a Windows GUI program automatically on a specific display? I dont want to have to manually start the GUI program, and then drag it to the correct display - I just want to specify which program I want to run on each display, either from a command file or from the "Start- >Programs->Startup" folder; or any other automatic method you can think of. Thanks!

taskmgr.exe accessing internet -- seems fishy
by Guest Stewart- 0 replies
Whenever I open the task manager, the Zone Alarm firewall detects taskmgr.exe trying to access the internet. I did a reverse DNS lookup to determine the requested destination. It has been everything from Microsoft, to Esset - the makers of my NOD32 antivirus, and google. Sometimes the IP address is unresolved. Does taskmanager have any reason to access the internet? Some have told me no, and I cannot get an definite answer by searching the internet.

Each time I restart my XP machine I get a dialog box that requires me to press OK before the OS continues to the "Blue Splash Page". The box consists only of a "greek" caption, some "greek" dialog text and an OK button. I was able to copy the greek text from inside the box, but not the caption greek text, Here is the text I copied between the quotes "㿸Ü" I have no idea what the dialog box is for or what it does, but I cannot proceed without clicking ok. Does anyone know what it is, or how to get rid of it?

It says "a driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32) Tried to update driver, uninstalled drives, and ran New Hardware manager, and still nothing. Please help?!?! What do I do now? Thanks.
