SATA HDD disappeared
by Guest goo_lu1- 5 replies

Yesterday night, my house RCD tripped while I'm uploading file to internet. After recovered PC power, I found that my SATA HDD disappeared from windows HDD list - other 2 IDE HDD, FDD, DVD drives & movable drive remained. I opened device manager, selected drives icon and right clicked on it then forced it to scan for hardware change. Device manager didn't found the SATA drive. However, every time I rebooted the PC, BIOS reported existence of the SATA HDD. I tried connect that SATA HDD to SATA0 then 1 (my gigabyte motherboard had 2 available SATA ports) of my motherboard. Each time BIOS could found the HDD drive. Was my SATA dead ? If no, how could I make…

Is there any way to set all directories under a certain parent directory to default to thumbnail view, without going through each folder individually and changing its setting, and also without changing the default view for *all* folders everywhere? In other words, I want to recursively set default view properties starting at one parent directory.

Could anyone give me any suggestions? Disk 1 for OS - 40 GB size Disk 3 for Data - 250 GB size If I have done format and partition for Disk 3 and copy all files into it, and now I need to re-install XP in Disk 1, without updating the SP2, what does it happen for Disk 3? Can I still find all data under Disk 3? but at this moment without updating SP2 and the maximum size of HDD is under 128 GB, will part of data be missing until upgrading with SP2? On the other hands, I split HDD into 2 parts, [H: drive 120 GB] & [i: drive 120 GB] and run the format process under NTFS format for both drives at the same time, so far, it already takes more tha…

unable to format XP MC hard drive prior to Vista Prem installation
by Guest Mike F from TN- 3 replies

My new eMachines pc (2G RAM) has XP MCE. I am trying to install Vista Home Premium from an Express Upgrade disk acquired on a special Vista upgrade program from eMachines/Gateway. I wish to do a clean install, which requires formatting the hard drive. The preparation instructions say this: "because the hidden area on your hard drive used for Windows XP recovery uses storage space, we recommend that you re-partition and format the entire drive (including the hidden recovery partition) before installing Vista." So I tried to format the C: drive partition prior to running the Vista installation disk, but it cannot be formatted because it contains some Wind…

by Guest Steve- 2 replies

Using WindowsXP Pro I have an USB external harddrive. The majoroty of the times I plug it in my computer assigns it to F drive. Sometimes depending on what else is plugged in it may be assigned a different drive letter. Is there a way to ensure that it is always assigned the drive letter F irrespective of whatever other perpherials are plugged in? Can it be assigned a UNC that will always be the same? If so, how? Thanks! Steve

Hello Experts: This one has me stumped, and if someone could assist, I would be deeply appreciative. I have two PCs, which I will call OLD and NEW. Below are the settings: OLD 192.168.1.100 (IP) 255.255.255.0 (Subnet) 192.168.1.1 (Gateway) NEW 192.168.1.101 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 The new PC is brand new, and has Windows XP SP 2 running. The OLD PC has the same OS. Inbetween the two PCs is a standard router. If the Windows or Zone Alarm firewall is running, the PCs can not ping each other, even if allowed via zone alarm. After disabling the firewalls, the PCs can ping each other, and do appear in the arp -a command. After ensuring th…

Microsoft Products and Piracy Issues!!
by Guest John Honest- 7 replies

Is piracy a thing of the past as far as Microsoft products are concerned? We have had WGA and Activation for sometime now so MS products should be "piracy proof". I remember vividly MS telling us that WGA is designed to "protect" genuine customers. Does this mean product prices will now be reduced because everybody is buying genuine MS products? Or was this just another MS gimmick to make our life hell by forcing us to install unnecessary patches for its own pleasure.

In Windows XP Home I use "Search" from the Start button. When I search for a file, in the results that come back, for some of the locations of the file it tells me for example: "My Computer". No directory or path is given. Where do I look for those files? Thanks.
