Cant access XP Pro normal/safe/last good config
by Guest abd08- 8 replies

Hi all, I have a PC at work which I did a clean install of XP Pro on a few weeks ago. It has been used very infrequently only by me, for non- internet purposes (so no viruses/spyware etc for sure - and I am the only person with access to this office). Yesterday morning I came into work to find that one of my PCs did not power on at all. The following happened (in order): 1. Switched PSU off from back, turned it on again - no result 2. Unplugged and re-plugged power cable in case it was loose - no result 3. Switch power cable for another one - the PC powers on - NOTE : The "faulty" cable works on another PC - and I'm not crazy! =) 4. When PC powers o…

View Available Wireless Networks...?
by Guest Kenneth- 5 replies

\ Howdy, If I click to "View Available Wireless Networks" the list populates with one correct network, but also includes several that are not, in fact, available. Those that are not available includes networks that I had logged on to at an earlier time, and at other locations. Why would they be listed as "available", and might there be a way to eliminate them from the list? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

XP SP3 Repeating reboots.
by Guest Harold A Climer- 12 replies

Is there a version of XP SP3 that already takes into account that the original OS image file came from a computer with an Intel CPU as opposed to an AMD CPU that is on my HP Pavilion A1520N? I tried installing XP SP3 on my Pavilion A1520N and got the repeating re-boot problem. I finally had to reinstall the whole OS from the recovery disks a got from HP. I do not want to have to do that again, and I am a bit leery of fooling around with the registry. Harold A. Climer Dept. XP update, now won't boot
by Guest DZ- 1 reply

Hey everyone, Last night I updated my PC (SP 3?), and now all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. I have a removable hard drive and last night I was using my 320 gb one. Today when I check the BIOS, it doesn't see my hard drive. It does see the DVD, USB devices, etc. When I use my 120 gb hard drive it does the same thing. The 120 gb was updated the other day and everything worked, although I had to go into the BIOS and tell it to boot to the hard drive. Both hard drives worked until after last nights updates. Any ideas? -- DZ

Quick Java Question
by Guest Danger_Duck- 5 replies

Now that Microsoft has J++, does it have a forum for general Java questions? While I'm at it I might as well give it a try here, since you guys seem knowledgeable about just about anything regarding computers: Is there a method in String, Integer, or other classes that will return the integer within a string like: int a = ClassName.method("I have 7 peanuts"); System.out.print(a); Output: 7 Again, while the answer to the questions would be fabulous, it would be even more fabulous for me to find out if there's a good place to ask such things. Thanks!

INVOLUNTARY CLOSING OF MULTIPLE WINDOWS
by Guest jdoug6- 2 replies

Until today, I could close individual windows without it affecting any other open window(s). However, when I now click to close a particular window, all open windows close automatically, forcing me to start over by re-opening the browser. I went to Tools to see if a particular setting had been inadvertently changed, but lack sufficient knowledge to know what to look for. Please advise! Thanks.

Cannot uninstall-reinstall program
by Guest Daniel- 4 replies

Hi everybody, It seems that I cannot reinstall a particular program, Google Earth. I could not obtain a solution on the Google Earth forums, Whilst on this NG, I always get good advice. My PC, XP-SP2, is pretty stable and well maintained. Here is my problem : I tried to install the new Google Earth V 4.3., but things didn't go well. As a result, The previous version (V 4.2) has been removed (so it seemed at first) but I cannot reinstall it, nor can I install the new version. If I try to reinstall V4.2 I get an error message indicating (in French) something like "the configuration data are corrupted". If I try to install V4.3, then I get the "erro…

Will Not Boot to Windows Desktop -- Please Help!
by Guest Chris Partridge- 2 replies

Hi All, I'm having serious start up problems with my PC after it tried to install Service Pack 3 for XP. Towards the end of the installation, lots of windows errors came up saying it could not read from memory address xx xx xxx etc... Anyway, whateverI did the errors would not go away so I hard-rebooted the machine. Upon it starting up again, there was no familiar post sound, although it did go through the BIOS screen start and onto the Windows loading screen. But, what what seemed like a long time on the windows screen it went to a screen saying "cannot find autochk installed" ... then went to a Blue Screen of Death for what seemed like a tenth of a…

Hey I am still having the same problems with my power save settings. I set my monitor to shut off after 5 minutes and sometimes it doesn't work. I thought I had narrowed it down to some programs, but the problem keeps coming back. I got down to 21 processes and it still happened. Could it be the video card drivers? Hello Newsgroups, I have redirected the My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos to folders on other discs, and changed their respective names slightly. To Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. Generally 'C:\' being the system and application disc, the redirection is as follows; D:\Users\[iT'S ME]\Documents D:\Users\[iT'S ME]\Music D:\Users\[iT'S ME]\Pictures E:\Users\[iT'S ME]\Videos Using a very clever tool, 'Shell Object Editor', from http://www.tropictech.de, I am able to display these Special/Shell folders in Explorer as Folders (as in not shortcuts). The folder list is displayed as; Desktop -Documents -My Computer -My Networ…

Turn off messages on Taskbar Notification Area?
by Guest Ed from AZ- 2 replies

I'm sorry this is such a mundane and simple question. But every time my laptop fires up, it gives me messages about wireless network availability and connections, antivirus update status, and sundry other things, all with the little balloons from the icons on the right end of the Taskbar. They take a long time to go away - just about as long as it takes to "X" out each and every one!! Is there one simple setting that will turn all these off? Ed

Followed Microsoft automatic update procedure and installed SP3 and then Iexplore 7, now every time I run windows explore it crashes when I try to change folders. Seems to be a common problem when I googled it, but I can not seem to find a fix other than uninstall back to SP2, seems a bit drastic as I have no other issues. Any known fix for this problem Windows xp Home edition.
