XP SP2 not installing.
by Guest Jyoti Sharma- 9 replies

I am not able to access my Windows XP. When I start Windows XP ( during booting ), for a 'flash' of a moment a blue screen comes on which something is written, but I am not able to see what is written there. After this the system restarts. I wanted to repair Windows XP ( assuming that some system file might have gone missing which was causing this behaviour ), but the setup fails everytime stating that some file is missing or corrupted and asks me to press enter to continue. When I press enter it says setup failed press enter to restart. And then I have to restart again. I used lens cleaner assuming that probably dirt and dust might be prohibiti…

How to tell if a partition is primary?
by Guest Sal- 12 replies
I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 that has 16MB partition that's used for diagnostic testing. The disk management snap-in only tells me that it's 16MB FAT, Healthy (EISA configuration). I need to know if this counts as one of my four primary partitions. How can I tell? When I right click on it, it just brings up a help menu for the Disk Management Console.

Remove a cached credential

I have an odd problem. I recently had to change my user's naming convensions from just their name to first initials + last name. I did this pretty easily by just changing the users logon names in AD so all their SIDs stayed the same and I also updated their profile and home directory names (%USERNAME%) to reflect the new logon name. I have a problem with some laptop users where they occasionally make the mistake of using their old username when they are not on the network. When they are on the network it is fine because they get denied logon because of the non-existing name on the domain but when they are at home, the laptop allows them to logon with…

by Guest Baron- 4 replies

I'm running XP Pro and recently noticed that I can no longer open System Properties from control panel. I also tried Win-key + Break-key and that also does not open System Properties. However, I am able to get to Computer Management either from control panel or from My Computer|Manage. I tried starting in safe mode as a test but was still not able to open System Properties. Also, I am the administrator. Any ideas?

by Guest Don Wiss- 0 replies

I'm running XP pro. At times I have problems getting the DVD drive to update its directory. I try all sorts of refreshing but ending up booting my machine. This is kind of over kill. What simplier way is there to force an update? I do not have any sort of auto play turned on. (DVDs were burned as data DVDs with Nero.) Don <www.donwiss.com> (e-mail link at home page bottom).

Problem: Adobe Photoshop elements by default creates folders for imported pictures based upon the date the picture is taken. After each import I need to set the folder option to view thumbnails... Goal: I don't want to do this system wide as my preference is to see file details for most other folders. thanks -tom

Home PC Repair

I wasn't sure of the right forum to put this in. Please don't be upset with me. I have previously used a PC Home repair service. I think they were located on the West Coast of the US and I believe their web site had "1800" in it. It was something like "1800fixmypc" or something like that. They were really good. But for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the web site. I swear to you all that this is not an advertisement or anything like that. Just a poor slob that cannot remember a web site name for the life of me. Can someone out there possibly help jar my memory??? Thanks for your help. PSULionRP

Trouble with USB connections
by Guest Walter R.- 4 replies

Running Win XP SP2. Normally, when I connect a USB device, Windows goes ding-dong and connects. Was working fine for my USB connection to my external SATA drive, which I use as a backup drive. I use an internal SATA drive as the boot drive. No problems. Since yesterday, it just sits there without making any connective noises and without recognizing the drive. I do not see this drive in the Bios, or in Windows Explorer. Device Manager shows no problems. The external SATA drive is formatted in NTFS, all other drives are formatted in Fat 32. Could this be a factor? There must be something wrong with my USB system/connection. Any suggestions would be…
