Save As dialog in MS Office hangs
by Guest Thorbjorn Sundboe- 2 replies

Hi, When I try to use the Save As dialog from Word, Excel or Powerpoint 2003, my system hangs for a long time when I try to choose destination folder in the "Save in" drop down. The drop down where I see the folder goes completely grey, I do not even see the folder frield anymore. After 1-3 minutes, it comes back. Then, when I choose folders or shortcuts in the folder list, it can take the same amount of time for each folder in the hierarchy I click on. I should have a very clean system, I have licensed software to clean registry, temp files, background programs and other resource culprits. I have defragged, ran checkdisk, etc. I am running a Thinkpa…

System Restore and Deleted Files
by Guest shirley- 10 replies

Hi, I accidentally deleted some very important files today. If I go back and do a system restore will the files be retrieved? I've read the other posts about these "undelete" programs, but since the language tends to get a bit technical for me, I'm hesitant to try them. Thanks, shirley

Manually Start ScreenSaver
by Guest Duncan Anderson- 5 replies
I know that the ScreenSaver can be previewed through the Display option within Control Panel. That isn't what I want. I want to be able to manually start the screensaver whenever I leave my desk. I have the re-start - after the screensaver has come on - password protected, so by having being able to manually start the screensaver I'm manually locking off my computer without shutting down any programs. If there isn't anyway to manually start the screensaver, does anybody know of a little bit of Freeware that will do the same or another way of locking my computer without closing down programs. TIA Duncan Anderson

Preventing MSN / Bebo Hacking
by Guest Eos- 12 replies

My son appears to have a recurring problem with someone hacking into his msn account & Bebo and then changing the content with malicious material. It would appear to be a common problem at his school and the person resposible is thought to be a pupil who is hacking into many other peoples accounts. My son follows the usual rules of using a address and password which isnt obvious and uses numbers & characters etc. He believes the person doing this is able to aquire someones msn address and somehow use a program to find what the appropriate password is. At the moment he is unable to access his Bebo account as he informs me that the person has changed…

Using search companion with advanced option 'Search hidden files and folders' plus a date. However when I save the search and re-open at a later date, the 'Search hidden files and folders' option is no longer checked. Any suggestions as to how I can get the saved search to keep all parameters? Thanks.

When I set up a Windows XP system, the computer is connected to our network and recieves it's IP address information through a DHCP server. This includes the IP address of our Primary WINS server. The system is only placed on our network to activate Windows. After completing activation, a static IP address and network are assigned, the system is shut down and shipped to our clients. When the systems are powered up at the client site and put on their network, the entry for our Primary WINS server still exists if they run 'ipconfig /all'. There is no WINS server on this network. If we go into the WINS tab of 'Advanced TCP/IP Settings', no WINS server is li…

Hotmail Upgrades! :-)

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070814-hotmail-gets-much-needed-attention-storage-limit-bump-other-upgrades.html I love Hotmail. I've used it thru its 2MB phase thru all the betas and everything. I used OE really early on, so they kept the old faithful guys on the system free. 2GB was great, but this is incredible. I'm just a little sad MS didn't kill Gmail earlier. They are powerful; they could have given people like 1GB when Gmail came out and matched it and there would be no battle.

Admin can't write to certain areas of registry
by Guest Anthony Smith- 2 replies

Good Afternoon, I hope everyone is doing well today. We have a workstation running WinXP SP2, and let's call the Admin account Anthony. I created a new Admin user on this account, let's call that user Deja. We have a business software that isn't functioning properly with this new admin user Deja. But if I log on to the Anthony account it works fine. There appears to be an issue with certain .dll's not being able to register with this Deja admin account, thus preventing certain parts of the program from functioning. Is there any possibility that this new Admin account does NOT have permission to write to certain areas of the registry? There was a .d…
