Can't Start Windows-Keeps Rebooting
by Guest GTifeld- 1 reply

Hi All, I've seen this question posted before, but none of the solutions offered seem to be helping my problem. I have an older PC which is caught in a re-booting loop. The XP logo appears, then it reboots. It comes up with the usual "Windows was not properly shut down..."message and offers the choices of Last known good config, Safe mode, Start normally, etc. None of the options work. Some of the suggestions I've tried so far was booting from the CD and using Recovery console to expand the KERNEL32.DLL file, and uninstalling SP2. Both of these attempts went smoothly, but neither has resolved the problem. Any other ideas or suggestiosn would be grea…

81 Critical Updates! 1 2
by Guest Philip Papeman- 26 replies

Hi Folks, I've "inherited" a 2-year-old Dell Dimension 9100 with Windows XP Pro SP2 and Office 2003. Although Norton Internet Security is current, it appears that neither Windows XP nor MS Office have ever been updated. A visit to the Microsoft Update site reveals that I require 81 critical updates (175.4 MB , 1 hour 9 minutes) to get this system up to snuff. Should I download ALL of these at once or should I install them in batches, say 10 updates at a time? Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks. Phil PS If there is a more appropriate group for this question, please advise.

Concerns about defrag's effect on hd 1 2
by Guest Laughingstar~*- 25 replies

I have XP Pro, SR2 etc...all updates, use WD, and OneCare. However, OneCare remains in the RED (warning me until I'm ready to demand my $ back that my computer's AT RISK), because I have not downloaded IE7, and do my own backups monthly. Additionally, it defrags every time it performs a scan. That is not good for my HD, imho. what's going on with MS? I am only using 26% of my main drive incl all docs, programs, etc. I've had to do a clean re-install of XP Pro twice in the past year. This is getting ridiculous.

ipconfig command returns a "Media Disconnected .." message
by Guest Hassan- 4 replies

Hello When I type the IPCONFIG command on a Wireless connection, I get the following error: Windows IP Configuration An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unknown media status code This only happens in the wireless mode. If I plug the laptop to LAN connection, the command works fine - gives me the IP address for both the LAN port and the wireless connection. What could be wrong? Thanks, Hassan

Dropped network shares
by Guest Gregg- 0 replies

I have a system running XP Pro SP2 with 2 shared folders and a shared printer that the other computers in the workgroup (all XP Pro SP2) need to access. The shared folders are mapped as drives on all the other computers. We have been having a problem with the computer with the shared drives disappearing from the network along with the shared printer. If we reboot the computer it will usually reappear on the network. I have checked to see if there are any scheduled tasks that might be running that would cause the problem but there doesn't seem to be. Any help will be appreciated. TIA, Gregg

by Guest BW- 16 replies

I know this is the wrong Newsgroup, but IE NG's have been disabled or something. My problem is that the Temporary Internet Files for IE7 has been specified as a System Folder, but only under my profile. I have familiarity with the "attrib -s" command, but do not know how to make a folder a non-system folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you, BW

to be or not to be

Suppose you tryed to do something but discovered you could not. You try latter and discover you can. In other words, you initially find a problem but when you try later you discover there is no problem. Situation 1 I boot partition G, which contains Wxp, and after awhile I try to run a game, which has always run before, but this time the game starts-up then the desktop appears. I try to run the game repeatedly but the results are the same. I shut-down then boot partition F where I work there for awhile. I then shut-down F and boot G. At G, I try to run the game and discover that it runs just fine. Situation 2 I boot partition H, which contain…

Re: Toolbars
by Guest stevrob- 0 replies

Re: Toolbars I downloaded the latest security updates on Tuesday. I have two user accounts, myself, and another. Whoever logs in first gets the toolbar at the bottom of the screeen, start, icons, etc. Once the second user logs in, the toolbar at the bottom is dark blue, and I can't get to anything. When I try to log off, the screen goes blank, and takes about 5 minutes to actually log off back to the first user. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance. Problems with "Windows Genuine Advantage" module after today's upd
by Guest Edward Ripley-Duggan- 4 replies

This morning, I found a substantial group of Windows XP, Media, and Explorer updates indicated as needing download in the tray. I duly ran these. Immediately after rebooting, my machine (a Dell Dimension 5150) became unstable. Upon booting into my desktop, an error message appeared indicating that there was an error in the Windows Genuine Advantage Module. More distressingly, I was from then on unable to run *any* programs. I went into safe mode and rolled back the system 24 hours. I restarted and my machine ran in a stable fashion. I then re-downloaded only the four specific Windows XP patches, as I consider these to be the most crucial since I don't u…

When I attempt to back up this drive using Norton Ghost 12, it shows as an unmounted drive thereby eleiminating certain option available only to mounted drives. How do I get the drive letter C: to appear? -- Ed

Product Activation
by Guest Fazal- 22 replies

Ok I think Im alittle confused here. I specifically went through the trouble of resintalling windows from an original CD (as I was originally using a pirated copy) so I could use windows 'legally' and take advantage of the various benefits (SP2, security updates, etc.) Now that I try to activate it, it says my product key has already exhausted the number of times it can be used for activation. Im practically using a brand new CD, I think Ive only used this CD once before and that was to install and activate windows on another computer. What does this mean...all the money I paid for the CD is down the drain??? just because its been activated once before? Ca…

svchost.exe sucks processes when firefox is on
by Guest Rzpogi- 0 replies

When I try to use firefox, svchost.exe makes my pc slowdown or even freezes or hangs. Firefox uses low memory but the pc hangs or freezes. This has been happening since I installed an update to my addon on firefox. When I use IE in the pc, my pc became stable even in multi-tabbing though IE uses more memory. Is Firefox or svchost.exe or some other programs responsible for this? Note: I use IE 6
