Reinstallation of Windows XP SP2
by Guest Tom _Hyde- 1 reply

I have recently tried to use the Windows XP SP2 system disk in order to reinstall Windows on my laptop.. The first time I used the telephone assisted support method which required me to type in nine six-digit numbers dictated over the telephone in order to authenticate my disk. I managed to do that and the process insisted on a complete download and warned me that after installation the first boot-up of Windows would take much longer than normal. In fact, after two hours of looking at the black Windows XP opening screen, carrying the message "Please wait...", I switched-off the computer then switched it on again. The computer booted-up and I was…

by Guest Matt Modica- 4 replies

Hello, Somehow (I don't know how), my .NET 1.1 Framework became corrupt. I noticed when I tried to open Media Center, which displayed this error: http://picsorban.com/view.php?pic=error2.png I did a little searching and discovered I needed to reinstall the .NET Framework because it was some how "messed up". However, after reinstalling, the same thing happens. When I try to install SP1 for he .NET Framework and an update for Media Center, I get this error when installing both: http://picsorban.com/view.php?pic=error1.png I discovered I needed to run the .NET Framework cleanup tool, but the one link I could find to it kept timing out. So now I am stuck.…

Is it dangerous to run a laptop of AC power without the battery? i.e. won't cause a fire. I don't want to ruin the battery life since I don't need to use it much as I am always near a power socket.

shared folders don't show

I have a windows xp home computer networked with a windows 98 computer. There hasn't been any problem with sharing folders. Now, most of my shared folders on my windows 98 computer don't show in the Xp network. I tried disenabling and renabling sharing, and it worked only on one folder. I think the problem may have started after I did a system restore on the xp machine. Not sure. I did login in safe mode, did a system restore and the restore was fine. However, I can't seem to rerestore the computer to another date( I would rather keep the current restored point). Suggestions? Bruce

Hello Everybody, I have WinXP SP2. I have reinstalled the entire system because my computer had become unstable because of some viruses. After reinstalling everything including Office 2003, Urdu language was not displaying well with Times New Roman font. Yes, I have fully installed Urdu language support both in WinXP and Office. I have used Urdu for very successfully for two years with same settings until the reinstallation. In Times New Roman certain character appeared as rectangles. When those characters were typed in Word 2003, it switched font to Tahoma. I searched around and downloaded a set fonts from http://www40.brinkster.com/hivelocity. This has partiall…

Allocating fixed USB com ports to devices
by Guest markp- 0 replies

Hi All, I have a problem with com ports and USB. I have some quad RS232 to USB converters, and I'd like XP to always allocate them fixed com port numbers, say 4 to 7, as they are used with other applications such as terminal emulators and chip programmers that have been pre-set to use those com ports. Is there a way of doing this, or is there a management program available that can be used to easily move com port allocations around? Thanks! Mark.

I am having a problem getting XP Pro to install............ I format the HD, the install runs through fine, and then I get a BSOD with an error telling em remove any newly installed hard drives, or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. The stop code is *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8A80528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I have tried different hard drives, different IDE cables, ran Memtest etc and still cannot get past this screen. Any ideas what is left to try? I don't have another PC with a floppy drive, so I…

I know that one can assign keyboard shortcuts in windows. But they are all assigned as ctrl+alt+<key> or winkey+<key>. Is there a way to assign just a single key to do a specific task? For example, I don't use caps lock at all, so I would like to assign it to do something else. Thanks

tiny display and icons
by Guest heather- 2 replies

Hi; this problem is driving me nuts; perhaps someone can help me? My partner has a Dell laptop, with a widescreen, running XP (SP2). It has pathetically tiny icons and all the displays are either little teeny centered or else on the left of the screen (on IE and Windows apps). Changing the display settings only makes the screen fuzzy, and also then centres the whole window, so there are black lines to the side. Changing the dpi doesnt help either (fuzzy).

who do I resolve this roaming profile issue?
by Guest Kelvin Beaton- 1 reply
One of the users on my network is setup with a roaming profile. In the last week or so, she says she has been organizing and rearranging her My Documents folder, but when she logs off or even restartes her PC all the chages she's name revert back to what they had been. If this is a symptom of her profile being corrupt, which one is corrupt, her local one of the one on the server? Should I disable her roaming profile by taking the path to her profile our of her network account and then delete the profile on the server, then put the path to the profile back into her account? This seems like the only way to resolve this... Any input would be appreciate…
