USB - Serial port download problem h e l p
by Guest Jack S- 11 replies

When I download a few hundred gps data points over my USB - Serial hookup, something happens that not only aborts the download, but immediately cuts power to the whole computer. I've used this gps for a few years and successfully downloaded lots of (track) data points over a serial RS232 type connection. Then I got a new computer, that doesn't have an RS232 plug in. So, I got a USB - Serial hookup with driver, and everything works fine, provided I don't download too much data. Typically, I'll be a couple minutes into a download (300 or 400 track locations), and zap, the power to the computer cuts off and I'm screwed. Can anybody tell me, or just gu…

I'm not 100% sure if this is the right place to post this, but I recently reimaged my computer with Windows XP. I am going to install either Microsoft Works 8 or Microsoft Works 9. I have copies of both of them, but I want to ask your opinions on which is better. I will proably use the word processor, spreadsheet, and calendar program. Tanks in advance for any advice.

Adding another monitor
by Guest Jay Stevens- 3 replies

I currently am using two Samsung 19 inch monitors and need to add another. I'm thinking of buying a 23 inch and put it in the middle between the two 19 inch. The video card I have is Nvidia GeForce 6800GT. What would be the best way to do this? Should I buy one more video card that has at least one preferably two monitors and use it on the new monitor? Should I buy a new video card that has three monitor out's on it? Do they even make such video cards. If I buy another video card and still use the one I have on the two 19 inch all I have available are the PCI slots. Would that be OK? Thanks J

Logging Computer Activity
by Guest TC- 2 replies

For time-tracking purposes, I'd like to log the amount of time I spend in each application on my computer. Is there an easy way to do that in Windows? Searching the newsgroups, I've seen vague references to a Windows "event log" which records every application start-up. If it also records every application shut-down, then it may be what I need. Can anyone provide me with more detail about this mysterious "event log"? -TC

PermissionsGrayedOut\CannotRunProgram
by Guest gh- 0 replies

We installed an upgrade to our XP, from a CD Rom. After installing the upgrade, when we try to run out software app, we get an "access denied user does not have permission to run this program. Please contact the network administrator." error message. If we select a file in the program folder, right click it and choose the security, some of the users have the read\readwrite boxes checked, but they are grayed out. We cannot check or uncheck any of the boxes. What would cause this? TIA

How to set values in registry
by Guest linda jones- 14 replies

I had my hard drive replaced last week. A dell teck helped set up the os and drivers as it was still under warranty. But now I am having problems downloading and upgrading as well as many other problems. I called dell again but that was no help. So I googled an error 1606 that I always get when I try to download java and found that it might be a registry problem. So I went to regedit and it says values not set. I don't know what that means. How would I set the values? ( If that is the problem) I am really tired of trying to talk to dell. I have XP home service pack 2. I'm sorry this is so long I'm still fairly new with a computer. Thanks for any advice…

Fixing a View for a CD/DVD
by Guest jj@j.com- 0 replies

I have a bunch of DVDs that I have burned with my digital photos. In a given folder I would have multiple file types but with the same base name (e.g. XXX_1000.tiff, XXX_1000.jpg). I already have it displayed as View > Details. But when I view a subfolder, it always displays it with View > Arrange Icon By... > Location Show in Groups and I want it to be Name Don't show in Groups How can I force it so that the above is the default view for any CD/DVD? TIA

Hello, A friend of mine had an issue with her pc. She was in the middle of a virus scan and the cat accidently stepped on the power switch of the surge protector, shutting down the pc. Ever since then windows will not start. Try to do a Norton GoBack and restore the system, but it fails. Try by-passing goback and starting windows normally, or in safe mode and I am unsuccesful everytime. It will start to boot but then eventually the pc will re-boot. We purchased a new HDD, formatted it and everything is up and running now. I re-installed the old hardrive so that i can transfer her old files onto the new HDD. I can not access it becaus ethere is no drive…

ActiveX controlls blocked machine-wide
by Guest G. More- 2 replies

Windows XP Home SP2 AVG antivirus, Windows firewall. When browsing pages with ActiveX controlls the IE information bar reads: "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for options." Clicking on the bar, the ONLY option available is Help. The option to install or allow ActiveX controlls is not there. I have tried everything I could find here and on the net to fix this problem and nothing works. Reinstalling XP is NOT an option. The PC is 100% free of malware and completely up to date (WindowsUpdate works just fine as you may notice). Creating …
