Upgrades, downgrades & a general mess
by Guest DBme- 4 replies

For reasons beyond our ability to fathom, the boss bought 5 new PC's from Dell with Vista on them. After finding out that half the software in the world and almost ALL of our software won't run on Vista, we contacted Dell to try to find out about downgrading to XP. We might as well have called and said "My talking book uncle monkey hat." It's Pointless! It's Usless! It's Dell! We went out & bought 4 copies of XP pro which we manged to load with agreat deal of problems (Dell Driver Hell) and now all four computers are giving us a 28 day countdown to activation. Even if we bite the bullet and start upgrading all our systems to XP, we're ALWAY…

XP connect to network drives at logon
by Guest Dave- 3 replies

I have XP w/SP2. I had several network drives mapped, and XP would connect to them when I logged in. All of a sudden, Windows won't connect reliably when I log in. Sometimes I get a message to the effect that not all network drives could be connected. Anothe time, I'll get no message at all but some or all of my mapped drives say disconnected network drive. Still other times I can open My Computer and it'll show all network drives connected. Any advice? Thanks, Dave

Hi Everyone, I was trying to enable the remote desktop using the following setting. Control Panel => Network connections => Local Area Connection => Properties => Advanced Tab => Settings Button(below) Enable the remote desktop server. And when I press the ok button after doing above, I get the following error. "an error occurred while internet connection sharing is enabled. the file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect" I tried different things, but I keep getting the same error. Can some one tell me what is the issue or problem and how I can resolve this. A quick response is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Windows XP unknown service updates. I also haunt the Intuit QuickBooks forums. In the past two weeks there have been a number of folks posting that they can no longer create a QuickBooks back up file. "I have Quickbooks Pro 2007 on Windows XP. I constantly get an error message that "Quickbooks was unable to backup company file" This only happens with the largest of the 3 companies that I have. I have tried all 3 different levels of verification. I have tried it on two different computers. I have tried backing up to different locations, different computers and an external hard drive. Once in a blue moon, the backup is accomplished. The size of that com…

BLUE SCREEN while attempting HIBERNATION
by Guest znort- 2 replies

If I try to bring my pc into hibernation I get a blue screen with a DRIVER_IRLQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and a STOP: 0x000000D1. It’s an old 3 GHZ P4, with 1 GB RAM, running XP SP2, kept up to date. I searched thoroughly the KB and tried various things of what is suggested, but with no result. 1) As most problems with hibernation/standby should be caused by hw incompatibilities, I first suspected of my modem, which was the oldest component, taken from an older pc. But today I tried with a more recent device and the problem has not changed. 2) In the KB is referred of a similar problem caused by Logitech mouse, I thus tried to uninstall and reinstall the re…

I have an HP laptop with XP Home and SP2. When attaching new devices via a USB port, I keep getting a message 'Cannot install this hardware - USB Device - The data is invalid'. This happens with my mobile phones and with a new Garmin Sat Nav system I have just bought. I have tried restoring my system to an earlier time but as this has happened for some time, I dont know what date this problem started happening. Also I have installed quite a bit of software in the last month and dont want to have to reinstall it all again. I have read Microsoft's article 810882 on this subject and have followed their instructions.....but having gone through all the d…

Programs that start at reboot
by Guest JimMcConnell- 3 replies

I just installed a new program (specifically Kodak EasyShare for my new digital camera). Now, when I reboot my computer, that program automatically starts up and runs in the background. I can shut it down and then start it when I need it, but I'd rather it didn't start up in the first place. How do you handle this. PS: I think this is computering 101, but I can't figure it out, and I've tried many different things:-) -- Jim
