Install Windows Without CDROM or Floppy
by Guest tim_milstead@yahoo.co.uk- 8 replies

My friend has a Dell laptop without CD or floppy drives. It has a 2.5" drive that I can connect to my computer using a USB adaptor. It needs Windows reinstalling on it (2000 not XP but that's not important - I am running Windows XP). I am guessing the only approach (other than PXE) is to copy the Windows CD onto the hard disk, boot it to DOS and run the setup program from there. The only problem is getting that hard disk to boot once it is back in the computer. I have no way of doing fdisk /mbr (on NT equivalent) to the 2.5" disk to make it boot. Windows software does not seem to have this capability - I have to boot using a Windows Floppy Disk and that does…

remove dual boot 1 2
by Guest Ed Mc- 27 replies

I have 2 hard drives in the same computer. Each has it's own copy of XP installed. It's a dual boot system. I would like to erase one drive and just use the disk for storage. Is this a simple task? My main disk is formatted NTFS. The one I want to erase is FAT32. Could someone give me a step by step procedure? Google gives answers for dual boot with different OS's. Thanks for any help.

Mystery Removeable Disk Drive
by Guest Dave- 1 reply

In addition to the standard A & C drives, I have an additional HD partitioned into drives D & E, plus I have 2 additional removable disc drives F & G. Occasionally, I add an external HD (USB) for backup purposes. Initially, the external HD was set as the H drive. Somewhere along the way, my comp decided this drive should be the I drive, and added a new mysterious removable drive which it decided to call H. The H drive now insists I should inset a disk every time I try to do something with it. How do I get rid of this H drive, and get my external back to being the H drive? Win XP SP2 Dave

My Help dialog box for any program won't show up. It started when I had a question in AutoCAD, so I hit the F1 key. The Help dialog box didn't show up. So I went to Word & the help dialog for Word woudn't show up their either. So then I clicked on Start/Help and Support & that one didn't show up either. So I restarted my machine & that didn't fix the problem. I'm running Xp SP2. What do I need to do to fix this problem? Thanks

I am trying to use the REN command in the command prompt to rename a batch of FOLDERS in one directory. The names are all 11 digits, long mostly letters, with a number as the last character. At the moment they all have a 5 at the end of the name, but I want to be able to change this last character to any other number in one go. I can do this for a group of txt FILES named 1115,2225,3335,4445..etc by entering.. by Guest Robert Macy- 0 replies

I can't get WinXP to allow me to open a file using a selected application. I want to use Scintilla's Sc1.exe to open several of the files that used to be associated with it. for example Matlab script program trythis.m used to open with Sc1.exe, but now WinXP won't let me open it that way. I can still open the Sc1.exe application, then find the file and open the file. But why can't I simply double click like I used to? I went to tools options and deleted the .m tie. Now I must choose what application opens it, but... So I click to open the .m file and get the browse, find Sc1.exe, but nothing happens, it won't open WinXP thrusts me back into …

The following error message continues to pop up on my desktop: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\Windows\system32\cidaemon.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." I tried sfc /scannow, but the error continues. Is repair possible? I would prefer not to turn it off. Thanks for any help, Owkmann

for Gerry . . .
by Guest BeeGee- 3 replies

Given your suggestions, with my XP O/S, as a test, I conducted a search for a file that was located in C:\Windows\System32\DirectX\Dinput. What I discovered was that with Look In set to My Computer, the Search did not find the file, and with Look In set to Local Hard Drives (C:), it did - but, I had to make certain that Advanced Options was CHECKED. After closing Search, then reopening it, once again, I have to CHECK the Advanced Options box. I have no idea why Windows XP will not keep this setting and am hoping you may know. Many thanks once again for your insight and support, Gerry. Brianna
