Frames, Web pages and XP
by Guest Dave Neve- 2 replies

Hello Sometimes, when I send a Webpage with frames (whatever that is), it triggers my antivirus but I still send it. Anyway, I've just sent such a page to a friend with XP and he has phoned me to say that on receiving the email, Windows reported an error and shut down and he can no longer reboot it. The page in question was http://wjchess.jeffprod.com/wjc_2d_maj.php and no, this is NOT a way of advertising but a genuine question. (check my previous posts on the Microsoft server if in doubt) Can anyone help to begin to shed light on what has happened??? Thanks Dave Neve

No display after full screen command prompt exit
by Guest Jim Ormsbee- 6 replies
If I open a dos window (command prompt) and go full screen by pressing alt-enter and then exit by typing 'exit'/enter, my display goes blank. The same think happens if I press alt-enter a second time. After this I can toggle using alt-enter between a full screen dos window and a blank display. The keyboard seems to be fully functional. Knowing the keystrokes, I can shutdown or restart windows, but I cannot seem to restore my desktop without doing so. Also if I let the screen saver activate I seem to be in a permanent blank screen. Any suggestions. Thank you. -- Jim Ormsbee

dual boot with WinXP Pro as both OS's
by Guest TBW- 3 replies

My intention is to config my laptop for work with 2 completely different domains/companies. If someone could point me to one or more good docs/links that would be great. Some general questions: - First, I'm assuming that I can have two installs of WinXP on the same machine: am I right? - Do I need 2 different volumes? - Can I use the same CD for both installs? - Do I install Office2003 twice? If yes, can I use the same CD? - Can I share files/folders (e.g., a singe My Documents) between the two OS's? Thanks very, very much!

Some windows won't close from the taskbar sometimes
by Guest Gene- 0 replies

A minor annoyance, but for some reason there are windows that won't close from the taskbar using the mouse right-click, then left-click on "close". Alt-F4 always works, and so does using the red X in the top right, but when I want to quickly close selected windows from the task bar, I often receive the "blunk" beep (it is not followed by an error message of any kind). There is not a detectable error going on, like a non-responding program. This seems to happen randomly and then I manually close the window with the "X". I've experienced it with Internet Explorer windows as well as Windows Desktop Search. It happens several times an hour so I thought …

"People came back and said, 'Please, will you take this off and replace it with XP?'" http://news.com.com/Vistas+growing+pains+leave+room+for+XP/2100-1016_3-6197757.html?tag=html.alert.hed David Daoud ran into trouble when he started using Vista, the new version of Windows that Microsoft and PC makers have spent millions of dollars advertising since it came out six months ago. He said it short-circuited key software programs he counts on: Quicken for balancing his checkbook, Lotus Notes e-mail and a networking program that connects his home to the office. His Sony camcorder also doesn't communicate with the PC properly. "Basically they don't work," s…

by Guest Tony De Shiro- 4 replies

I'm running Windows XP with SP3. Everytime I boot up the computer Windows Installer attempts to load PhotoGallery. I don't have FrontPage installed. My printer is an HP PhotoSmart 2610xi all-in-one. I thought it might be a problem with the printer install but after working with HP tech support for a day, they say there's nothing they can do. Suggestions? -- Tony D.

Fast User Switching Issues
by Guest jmattia@gmail.com- 4 replies

I have a few issues when switching users on Windows XP. I only have two accounts setup, and switch between them very frequently. When moving from one logged in account to another, my video card seems to temporarily go dead. The monitor goes black, the power button turns orange, and it stays that way for about 2-3 seconds. Then, the desktop jumps to life on the user that I selected. If I move to the welcome screen and select the account I was just on, everything goes smoothly. But when actually changing accounts, I get the two or three seconds of lag. The only thing I can think of is my Norton 360 antivirus software. Other than that, nothing else comes t…

WIN.INI
by Guest Pete- 2 replies

During installation of a program there was a problem and the Uninstall part of the program did not get installed. The program itself did not function properly and I needed to uninstall it but could not do so via Add/Remove Programs. I had to resort to deleting the program folder from Program Files. Now under System Configuration the WIN.INI file shows an entry for this program with sub headings (User Name, Version, ExecPath etc). I would like to remove this entry - is it ok to edit the WIN.INI file in Notepad and delete the entry or is this not a good idea? I realise that I can disable the item in the System Configuration Utility but this changes s…

Windows Explorer Search Failure
by Guest JoeSpareBedroom- 2 replies
Running XP Pro with all updates. I'm having problems searching for "word or phrase in file". If I view several files in the folder in question, I can see that the text exists. But, the search feature doesn't find them. These are NOT encrypted files, and on another computer, with the same OS, the search feature works fine. The two machines are side by side, so I can compare and be sure that all search options are identical. Any suggestions?
