So many problems posted here seem to revolve around hard drives that go bad. I wonder if there is a step by step recipe for determining that the drive is no longer usable. What say you? Bill

i386 folder
by Guest Tatar- 11 replies

My Windows XP Prof is updated to SP3 and I have a slipstreamed CD of the software. I checked my C:\i386 folder and non of the files in it is newer than 2007. I assume that i386 folder files are not updated when you have automatic updates from Microsoft or when you install a service pack. My question is how can I delete and than create a new i386 folder from the winxp SP3 CD. which files folders I copy from the CD to the folder?

"The test takes a few seconds to complete. When its done you'll see a page where the transaction ID and source port randomness will be rated either GREAT, GOOD, or POOR. If you see a POOR rating, we recommend that contact your ISP and ask if they have plans to upgrade their nameserver software before August 7th." https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc/services/dnsentropy

Connecting to a server by name
by Guest Jasper Recto- 2 replies

I have a Cisco ASA firewall that allows me to VPN into our company domain. When I'm in the domain, I can ping any computer or connect to it through terminal server by using the computer IP address. Is there anything I can do so that I can connect to computer by its computer name? If I try to ping a computer name, the DNS can not resolve it. Is there a host file I can edit that can reference the computer name and it's corresponding IP address? I'm on Windows XP. Thanks, Jasper

eabfiltr error in Event Viewer
by Guest CAskier- 1 reply
My laptop is taking forever to load from once I enter my password until the desktop appears. Booting to the login screen is normal. I have checked Event Viewer and the only error I am receiving is this: Source: Service Control Manager Type: Error Event ID: 7026 The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: eabfiltr I have not been able to find anything on this error to help me correct it. I am using an HP laptop in a docking station. I have checked my MSCONFIG and there are only 6 items checked under Startup and they are all necessary programs. Any suggestions on how to resolve the Event ID? Thanks!

I have a user that logs on to a Windows XP box but Explorer.exe does not start so I have to manually start it. If I log on with a different profile (admin and non-admin account), Explorer.exe will start. What could be causing this within that profile? Thanks, Enrique

Right now if I double click the drive letter of one of my CD/DVD drives, autoplay kicks in. If I right click the drive letter, "AutoPlay" appears as the top menu item and default action. How can I change this to something else, such as "Explore" or "Open", which was the default previously? Note to the many people who copy/paste replies without bothering to read: I'm not asking how to disable autoplay itself. That IS disabled. Discs do not autoplay when inserted--only when I double click the drive letter.

Copy & Transfer of XP Pro Desktop Font(s)
by Guest NA- 0 replies
Many years ago, when I installed Windows XP Pro onto my desktop PC, I had downloaded some online desktop theme(s) and have been using it since. Now, I have a laptop with Windows XP Pro too, and I would like to have the same desktop appearance--especially the font used. I can no longer remember where or which theme I'd downloaded from previously for the desktop. Is there a way to copy and transfer the desktop theme or font over to the laptop? TIA!

HELP! XP STOP error !
by Guest Graham- 7 replies

My wifes computer has a serious problem! This developed the other day when the computer froze and she went to reboot. Computer is generic model with Asus A7A266 Socket A motherboard. It has a single 512MB DDR DIMM for memory. What happens, is that it goes through the boot process, the Windows XP splash screen appears but then we get a blue STOP screen that says: STOP C0000221 {bad image checksum } The image CRYPTUI.DLL is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computer checksum. The computer then reboots in an endless loop. I have tried using F8 to start up in safe mode, but this does not work - it fails at same point. None of the option…

Please HELP...Can't log into computer administrato
by Guest Jodi- 2 replies
I have Windows Xp on my computer and we have never created new account users we have also just used computer administrator. Last week, I made a new account. Today I shut my computer down and when I booted back up, I only had the chance to log into the new account I made, computer administrator is gone! I cannot access any of my files, pictures, etc that I had saved on my computer. When I created the new account I did give it computer administrator rights because it said I had to have at least one more account with the administrator rights. Can anyone help and tell me how I can log into my old account and where to find it. Thanks, Jodi

Hello: I just noticed that have lost my on-screen volume contol; the little bars that show at what level the sound is. I can still adjust the volume by using the "Volume" icon on the task bar or the vulume knob but the graph bars were an easy way to see the db level. Does anyone have a clue as how to get them back? I'm running Win XP-Home/SP3. I appreciate your help, Fred

Is there a simple way of monitoring the bandwidth usage by individual IPs on a LAN via the proxy server? The proxy used is Freeproxy on XP SP2. I could not find a way of configuring Freeproxy to do this. Mohan -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200808/1

installing updates
by Guest Charlie- 2 replies

The OS is XP Pro. I just had to do a total recovery to as delivered conditions. As part of the process I went to the MS website and downloaded and installed SP3. Now when I start to shut down I get the message "installing updates". It reports 13 updates to be installed. As soon as the update process starts and before anything actually gets installed the PC shuts down. This happens every time. Are these new updates beyond SP3? If they are why does the install fail? If they are redundant to what SP3 has already done, how do I remove them? Charlie
