LAN failure coming out of standby
by Guest arnieb- 0 replies

I've read some of the postings about this failure mode. This just recently started to happen intermittently, now it is pretty reproducible. If I put my computer 9 ( XP with the latest updates ) in Standby mode the LAN will not be functioning when I restore operation. I have to turn it off, unplug the power cord and wait 5 minutes before I can reboot it and have LAN. I saw someone posting about a bad battery. My motherboard is about 3 years old, so the battery could need replacement, but its hard to see why this would have an effect. The battery seems to be working. Any ideas would be helpful. Arnie

by Guest Robert Bodling- 6 replies

I have posted a problem I have with my main system, the system clock is running an hour behind and if I try and manually adjust the time, it will reset to it's previous time and remain an hour behind. I have tried to sync it with Atomic Clock or the time servers and it will not sync with any of the time servers, and I can not figure why. Please, some one give me some ideas where I'm not looking or what I'm missing...

Start Up Programs

I work on WinXP Pro (80GB HDD, P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, SP2). Whenever I login (using my username & password), I find that XP takes considerable time to proceed & display the desktop. I had a look at the list of processes in the Task Manager without explicitly starting any process/program & found that a few processes, which aren't required at start-up, were listed there. These processes are neither listed in Services under Computer Management (right-click My Computer--->Manage--->Services) nor are they listed in the Startup folder (Start--->Programs--->Startup). Some softwares (like Yahoo! IM, Window Blinds etc.) give users the option to…

Any installshield product causes NTLDR is Missing on sysprep'd PCs
by Guest JPenske- 1 reply

I recently created a multiplatform image, and it works great with anything but installshield products. Any time software that uses installshield is run, it severely fragments the hard drive and I get "NTLDR is missing" on the next reboot. This does not happen if the software is installed prior to sysprep, only after running sysprep. Any ideas? thanks!!!!

XP w/Product key but no COA
by Guest abd08- 2 replies

Hey all, We have a copy of XP Professional Upgrade w/SP2, along with the product key stuck at the back of the card-like booklet it came in. We have thrown out the box. This leaves me with 2 questions: 1. Can I get another COA? - From what I've read, this doesn't sound possible. 2. Can I sell this copy of XP Professional upgrade with just the product key and "proof of license" thing written at the back? Note, it has never been used! Thanks Raj

Old Tapes
by Guest Paul MR- 9 replies

From the back of the closet I recently unearthed six tapes (Travan 3) that I used to use for back up three computers ago. I want to give them away to whoever might still use them (they cost over $30 each). But I know they contain confidential information like my old tax returns. Any suggestions about how to clean them before offering them to strangers? If I wind up having to trash them, is burning them the safest way to destroy the data? Apologies if this is the wrong group to ask; could you redirect me please. Paul in San Francisco

Wrong OS for Keyboard Driver
by Guest Bella- 0 replies
I purchased an (outdated but new) Palm m515 PDA because there were available (outdated but new) keyboards for it that I could operate while on my back during all of the next 6 months. Now I found out that the driver needs Win 95/98/2000/ME or NT. My OS is Win XP sp2. Both PDA and keyboard are outdated enough that there is no longer any telephone or online support system. Is there a way to load the ThumBoard driver on my computer (and thus my PDA) with the Windows XP system? Any options that anyone knows of? -Bella, and Blessing her wheelchair Service Dog

by Guest RJK- 15 replies

Having an hour or two to spare, I Googled around and further researched the new (older gen. Pentium D935) components that I slapped into my system box, ....box a few weeks ago, (mobo/cpu/memory and other parts) I stumbled across http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60416 ....which led me to :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256 FAT LOT OF GOOD IT IS, me building a new system box to find that MS have left it up to me to get their OS making use of half of it. Any tips for anything else that MS may not be bothering to "update" for me, gladly accepted. regards, Richard

Standby not working
by Guest RobF- 3 replies

This from yesteday - didn't post ( on my OE reader)-hope this repost doesn't duplicate previous one that other readers may have accessed. RobF Hard disk & monitor spring back after varying intevals of time, using first start->turn off->standby, then later power management enablilng power switch to effect standby. Have tried closing systray apps and turning off cable modem. No success. The help files don't point to a trouble shooter for standby. So far, haven't found solution in MS online. If that's due to faulty searching, please supply a pointer, where to find...Suggestions greatly appreciated. -- RobF Address anti-spammed

I just had a problem with a Windows XP computer - I used V-COM's Partition Commander to resize the NTFS boot partition. Horrors, Partition Commander gave me an ugly error that it had an internal error, I had lost data, bye bye. System became unbootable. I was finally able to boot from a Partition Magic 8 CD, which allowed me to fix some HD errors (but I had to reboot from the CD and fix 3x). This allowed me to boot, which allowed me to schedule a CHKDSK for the next restart, which fixed over a HUNDRED errors(!), which fixed the system with only the loss of some unimportant data files. Now, during the days of Windows98, I kept a bootable Win98 floppy with Norton…

Questions about external drives for XP
by Guest Joan- 10 replies

I am a "young" senior citizen and an avid enthusiast of digital photography and editing. Due to the large size of Photoshop files and that I cannot afford a new PC with a faster processor I am looking for ways to make my PC more productive. It's been slowing down quite a bit lately. I have IntelP4 and have upgraded to 2GB of memory, so don't think memory is an issue. I have a 80GB HD with 48GB of free space. I move important picture and project folders to DVDs for safety but also to keep more free space on the hard drive.I also keep my system maintained very well (clean, defrag, A-virus, firewall, etc..,) it'd help me to know the following: - What chan…
