Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
by Guest hi from australia- 1 reply

Hello, I have backed up my files, transferred them from the original PC to a LapTop via a USB direct network connection, yet when I use the F&ST Wizard to retrieve the saved file I get the message "The location that you specified does not contain stored information. Please type a valid folder path into the edit box. If you entered a path to a folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the drive" Now I have also burnt the backup file (550mb) to a cd and a dvd, and neither neither will read either, it gives the message; "Please insert disk 1" and when you hit OK it says "The disk you inserted is not the correct one. Please insert disk 1" …

Hey: After a shutdown or standby my keyboard will not work sometimes. In device manager, the yellow flag is visible. I "uninstall," reboot and it will work again. Never have used a disc for the keyboard, it has always worked off generic drivers (?) Thank you, -- Ed H Dell Dimension 4550, WinXP Home SP2 60 Gig. HD, 512 DDR, Pentium IV 2.40 GHz.

startup menu black bar where graphic should be
by Guest joelgee- 5 replies

Okay. This isn't a life-threatening issue, but it's starting to gnaw at me that I can't fix it. When I click "Start" and access my startup menu, there should be a graphic and my name at the top of the menu. However, what is there is a black bar. I've checked themes, start menu and taskbar, and user accounts. Everything that I've checked tells me that my chosen graphic and name should show up. Yet, I'm looking at a black bar. Anybody have any ideas about possible causes? Like I say, not life threatening, but I think I should know enough about Windows to fix this, but I don't. Thanks, J

Dr. Watson log file, big problems
by Guest WDMaples- 9 replies
I restarted my computer yesterday and an error box came up notifying me of an error (I don't even remember what it was) with Windows. I clicked to send the report to Microsoft. Later on I started to do a backup to my Iomega drive and saw that the amount of data on my C: was monstrous. I have a 220 GB drive on a pretty new computer and only had used about 17 GB. It was showing I had 182 GB used. I opened defrag and it showed a tremendously long red line indicating massive fragmented files. I began looking for the culprit and found the log file for Dr. Watson was 166 GB. I have no idea what the error was, but it wrote a massive amount into the log…

snap-in failed to initialize
by Guest Patricia- 7 replies

I am using XP pro. Yesterday it gave me a spooler problem when trying to print. I restarted the computer and it has now wiped out all the printers there. I cannot get into the services to see whether the spooler function needs to be restarted as it gives an error message snap-in failed to initialise. I wanted to restore and this function is just not there. In properties it has been turned on, but if I go to Accessories it doesn't show. I have been on the Help and Support, but the system restore wizard will not start. I would be grateful of any help.thanks -- Patricia

System clock will not sync.
by Guest Robert Bodling- 6 replies

My system clock is an hour behind and when I attempt to manually adjust the time and tell it to update, I get the following error message, "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.nist.gov" or any of the other time servers, why? And, why doesn't my system keep the time current when I manually change the time? It continues to reset back to an hour behind.

Wiped hard drive causes printer communication problems (help)
by Guest Blue Moo- 3 replies

My hard drive was completely wiped in June 2007, so I had to reinstall everything. I then realised that I couldn’t find the driver disk to connect my printer to my computer. So I contacted the Dell forums to see if I could buy a new one or use the down loads on their site. I was sent a link and I down loaded it. The printer began to respond and printed a test page, but as soon as I wanted to print a document a message came up saying that the printer was not communicating. so I removed the printer and driver and then reinstalled them. Now every time I open an application the following error message appears: "The procedure entry point ?GetDIMSValue…

XP Start Up problem
by Guest Bill- 2 replies

I have been using XP Professional for over a year with no problems. Suddenly when I tried to start, the program would go through the BIOS check and then the Windows Logo would appear. At that point the screen would go blank and instead of the desktop appearing, the computer would essentially restart and the entire process would repeat over and over. I went to the Windows Advanced options menu and tried the various options available. It will not boot in safe mode. Boot logging will not work. VGA mode will not work. Last known good configuration, debugging mode will not function. I did have some success with "Disable automatic restart on system failure" U…

"no disc in drive" when I try to play DVDs
by Guest davidofelston- 2 replies
Suddenly when I insert DVDs in my computer I can no longer play them. The drive doesn't recognize that there is a disc in it. This started happening after I tried to copy a disc which I'd made with a DVD recorder and copying was stopped because of an error. WMP shows no indication that there's a disc in the drive, Cybermedia Power DVD says "No disc in drive1", and when I try to copy a disc the tray opens and I'm told to insert a source disc. Can anyone here suggest a cause and possibly a solution for this problem? I've only had a PC for a few months and am still a beginner, and I have no idea why this happened. Thanks in advance for any help.

Dual Booting

Hi, I have three partitions, XP Pro on the first, Vista on the second and my data on the third. The problem I am having is accessing the data from either OP. If I change ownership in one and then the other I cannot open files from the first and have to take ownership again. I have had this system running OK for months but have had to reinstall when the motherboard blew and cannot get it running for the life of me. I hope somebody can help, thanks in advanced.
