Compressing ratio
by Guest miracle- 11 replies

It looks that WinZIP is useless to compress big EXE files. For example, it almost cannot reduce size of big setup file, the compressed file size remains the same(almost). Looks like using WinZIP is useless for compressing big executable files. Am I correct?

Hi, I made several images of my hard disk with Acronis True Image 11. I did put them all on an external drive. I did check them all and I kept only those which where validate. I had a computer crash and I did want to restore an image. All of them were suddenly corrupt! It is like the police. When you need them they are not on your service. Jacques Wenger Belgium

keyboard error when locking the machine
by Guest lab-guy- 2 replies
Hi all - Lock my machine several times a day using (win key & L) when I walk away from the desk. When I come back, I put in my password and I'm in. Sometimes, though, I get an error when putting in my password, that the caps lock in on. I cannot turn caps lock off, and can't get back in to the machine, so end up shutting it down. Is extra annoying because I run an emulator window to an AS400 , and the 400 doesn't always let be back in right away. Any ideas ? Thanks - Mike

I am in need to install another win xp pro SP3 on the same Disk partitioned in C: and D: in NTFS format. I ask: Is it possible to get it or there will be conflict? For the boot what is the best? I think to rewrite the command line in boot.ini, like it: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetect This will work? Or then I tink also in use the magic boot from partition magic Could MVP explain to me?

by Guest Runner- 6 replies

I recently downloaded windows steadystate. It then restarted my computer for an update about an hour or two later. It restarted, I got to the welcome screen, and I couldn't see any usernames nor the turn-off button. I restarted my computer, tried to log on in safe mode, and still no usernames. Could someone possibly help me?

Outlook ignores rules
by Guest Dudely- 2 replies
Outlook 2000 is ignoring some of my rules. Please note, many of my rules do in fact work. There are however a handful that simply will not do what I tell them to do. For example, I have a rule setup to look in the message header for "X- Sender: laxminivasmittal@gmail.com" (no quotes) - I'm simply cutting & pasting from a real received email whose spam I'm trying to delete. It processes my inbox, but never finds a match even though it is without question in there. I've also tried looking for the From: line as a match on the sender. No go. Any solutions? Thank you in advance

where does all the memory go
by Guest chasgl- 2 replies
When I start my computer it has about 300 megs in use. But after a while Task Manager says it has 800 to 900 megs in use, which is more that I have so it uses virtual memory and slows down. But if I look at the processes tab it only adds up to about 120 megs. I do have show processes from all users selected. What could be using the rest of the memory? How can I chase it down? Thanks, Chas

I have a computer with two hard drives. Can I use ghost to create an image of ny C: Drive, then install that image to the other drive (J: Drive) Then boot to J: Drive? Will this cause any issues? It seems like it might. I want to streamline the J: Drive for games only, I do not want them on my C: Drive don't want to load anymore programs than I need for business. If this is okay and will not cause any issues, how do I boot to the other Drive? Thanks in advance I will also post in XP Help and Support

Lost Part of Control Panel - Pls Help
by Guest Molly- 23 replies
First I noticed that the single click on the mouse was no longer an option, maybe 3 days ago. When I went to the control panel, the mouse Icon was gone, actually the entire part of the interface that let me get to the windows display, to set the wallpaper and change the pixels on the monitor was gone as well. I've taken the registry back two days but would like to know if this is a probable solution before taking the registry back further. I've just lost beaucoup time because of another problem. Thank-you, Molly

Hard Drive Missing in My Computer
by Guest ctc- 5 replies
1 of my existing 4 hard drives (not OS drive, data only) no longer appears in My Computer or Disk Management. The missing drive is a WD500gb SATA on an installed SATA card. Both are recognized by the Bios upon bootup. Both are recognized in the device manager and their properties state that they are working properly. The drive is found by Add Remove Hardware and is listed as working properly. And the Data Lifeguard Tools finds the drive and states that it is working properly. No other programs can see the drive. I have uninstalled the drive from Device Manager and upon rebooting it is automatically displayed there and it's properties state that it is w…

Suddenly lost most of my drive letters - no SD!
by Guest teddysnips@hotmail.com- 3 replies
- 196 views
I don't often use the media slots in my XP machine, so I don't know when the problem occurred, but I've just tried to view some photos on my SD (miniSD?) card and suddenly I can't see it (the card, I mean). So I went to Explore My Computer and noticed that, whereas I used to have drives D, E, F, G, H and I (or something) suddenly there are just two (C: and D: - the CD) If I put a pen drive into the USB port I get an E:. But putting a card into the SD port and nothing. nada. Anyone any ideas? Thanks Edward

After every user logon my laptop with Windows XP SP3 displays the About Windows popup box (same popup box as if you would select Help/About Windows in Windows Explorer). I am not sure how I caused this to be happening. Could anyone please tell me how to get rid of this popup. It is quite annoying. Thanks...Michel.

Hibernation/Turn off hard drives Options?
by Guest rfIPS- 5 replies
I have a user with a desktop that runs super warm. He doesn't like to close everything and shut down his computer so he's entering it into hibernation. The problem is that it takes several attempts to wake it up out of hibernation; it will come out eventually but only after several attempts. After doing some research, I found it could be related to graphics drivers which I am in the process of troubleshooting. In the meantime, can someone tell me what the option for "turning off hard drives" would do? Has anyone had problems with this? Also, if applicable: this is a remote user that VPNs in to the network. I suspect he probably just puts it in hibernati…

Unable to start Automatic Update
by Guest Pseu- 3 replies

Hello. System: Win XP Media Centre Edition – Service Pack 3 Somehow, I picked up a variant of VirtuMonde; Symantec Anti-virus, Spybot Search & Destroy etc did not locate it; I discovered it by chance using Windows Sysinternals Process Explorer. I ran Vundo Fix 7.0.0.6 and it removed three traces of VirtuMonde, I then rebooted and ran Vundo Fix 7.0.0.6 again, this time it found nothing. However, I noticed that Automatic Update was disabled. Irrespective of how many so-called “fixes” I try, I cannot enable it via Services. When I set it to automatic and click start, I receive the following message: Could not start the Automatic Updates service on…

Web page opened-up position in task bar
by Guest Vincent- 1 reply
I don't see what I've done recently so that the web pages I opened all appeared on the right, instead of the left corner of the task bar, which is the usual case. What's more, only one page was in sight on the task bar, I'd to use the up- and downward arrows to come to another page. Could anyone tell me how to come back to the default setting of the task bar, please? Thanking you in advance. Vincent

nslookup reports wrong DNS server
by Guest Robert S- 1 reply

I've been having a few networking problems contacting other computers. We have a small network with a router (192.168.0.1) and a DNS/DHCP server (192.168.0.33). The router is able to provide these services but I have disabled DHCP. Despite this, the nslookup command reports the router as the DNS server. C:\Documents and Settings>nslookup google.com Server: http://www.routerlogin.com Address: 192.168.0.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name: google.com Addresses: 64.233.167.99, 64.233.187.99, 72.14.207.99 All of the other PCs on our network (correctly) use 192.168.0.33 as the DNS server. I've tried setting the DNS server manually to 192.168.…

I can connect to my wireless network at home but I'm at another location with wireless service and I cannot connect to any wireless networks.
