Recovering encrypted files after video hardware failure
by Guest Bill Fuller- 3 replies
I have a rather unique problem... I have a Toshiba laptop that had a video card failure... and this card is no longer manufactured or available. Meaning, the laptop is useless. Unfortunately, I had some files/folders on that system that had been encrypted using Windows encryption. Now it seems that, even though the drive itself is undamaged, I have no way of decrypting/moving them to another system. Does anyone have any knowledge on rather or not these files can be recovered? If so, how (copy the encryption key, etc.?)?

copying "account unknown" user profile to good user account.
by Guest Jeffery Roodhouse- 4 replies

An office had a single Windows 2000 Server acting as a DC. That server died. We installed a Windows 2003 SBS. Had to create the users again on SBS, no problem, but of course the have different SIDs from the first DC. the problem is with the PCs. The domain name is the name for the SBS, but the PCs don't see the domain. In order to reregister the PCs, I've done the following: 1. move the PC from domain to workgroup. 2. move the PC back to domain. 3. add domain user back to PC with "admin" permissions for prep. Now, the user profile on the PC from the original domain is showing as "unknown account", where the same username under the same original domain, b…

Thanks to all who responded yesterday about Norton. I did a search this morning AFTER I un-installed & still had 13 folders. Hit delete & there is 4 that says I can't delete? I did go to add\remove & take everything Symantec\Norton out of there but now, do I really have to go to the registry. HORRORS!!!! Somebody posted this.............................................. Are you SURE you removed all remnants of Norton? Did you use the super-sekret Norton removal tool? Did you scan your registry for "Norton" and "Symantec?" .............................................................................................................................…

So, back in the day (round ‘92), I had a self booting utility that would run a diagnostic test on my computer. It would test everything from the mother to the ram and hard drive. Does anyone know of any good software that does that now. I have been out of the repair loop for a bit. Thanks

custom Startup Items launcher
by Guest George Valkov- 2 replies

I have created a C++ application that strips admin privileges and can then start any application in restricted context (SafeRun). I want to integrate it with the start-up items: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Current Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup .... so that Windows will only start my application and it will take care to run the others with less privileges. Is this possible and how? Thank You for any web links, examples and ideas! George Valkov __________________________ ....browse the web safer

Scheduled Task runas:
by Guest LoriP- 2 replies
I have Windows XP Tablet Edition, SP2. I'm logged on to a domain as one user, but need to run the scheduled task as a different user. I have the task set up to run a batch file. The first line of the batch file is "taskkill GTViewer.exe /f," the next lines copy and unzip files, then the last line starts GTViewer in maximized mode. The batch file runs successfully when executed outside the task. It also runs successfully when I open a command prompt as another user. When I schedule a task and set the RunAs to DOMAIN\00000111 (and enter the password), the file runs but it doesn't open GTViewer; I'm logged on as 99999999@DOMAIN. 00000111 is an admini…

Many thanks, -T

Hello, I have a very slow video playback (very choppy) whenever I play streaming video on the internet. I have read many posts to solve this problem but I cannot fix this. I am connected to a broadband connection for my internet. The internet runs very quickly. My computer has a lot of disk space and 512 RAM. I have defragmented my computer as well as done various cleaning to the system including checking for malware, viruses, disk cleanup. I only have 40 processes running which are mostly mcafee applications. I don't know what else I can do but everything I have tried does not fix the problem. I know my connection can give very good playback becau…

Recovering from a virus help

I am trying to help a person recover from an infected computer and am *almost* there, but have 1 nagging problem I can't seem to figure out. I am not 100% positive it is related to her infection. WinXP Home w/ SP2 (but obviously still needing some updates). Removed an old version of Norton and installed Corp Ed 10.2. * Had to run the updated virus defs manually because the computer wouldn't connect to symantec to do them automatically. Also installed Spybot Search & Destroy. Was able to do those updates. Rebooted into Safe Mode - ran both AV and Spybot. Found 12 spyware & 14 virii (one of them had 60+ occurances). Cleaned those off - but had a …
