Complete Uninstall Media Player All Versions and Reinstall?
by Guest ColTom2- 6 replies

Hi: Does anyone know how to completely remove all versions of Media Player and reinstall Media Player 11. I think a lot of the problems are carried forward from former versions when you unistall version 11 and it rolls back to version 10 etc. I would like to completely remove ALL versions and start a new with Media Player 11. I had no problems whatsoever with Player 11, until I reformatted and now I have a lot as descibed in various postings, i.e. Library, Ablum Art, Plugins etc. Thanks, Col Tom

I have scheduled task that executes a batch file and it runs without any errors. The first line of the file is "taskkill gtviewer.exe /f," then some file copies and moves happen, and the last line should open GTVIEIWER.EXE in maximized mode. I can run the batch file by itself without any problems. I can also open a command prompt as a different user and run the batch file successfully. When the scheduled task runs as the user who is logged on it completes successfully, BUT when the scheduled task runs as a different user than who is logged on to the PC, the program never fully opens, although if you look at processes in Task Manager it shows it is runn…

print server authentication problem
by Guest Madd Scientist- 2 replies

i'm having an on-going issue with a few users at my company. we have a print server that is running 2003 server, and we use AD, and all of our machines are running XP. the problem is that when certain users change their AD password, they lose their connection to the network printers. the only way to fix this in the past has been to "Start - Run" to the print server itself, where it will ask for the user's new password, and once it has the new password, the printers connect properly again. the odd thing is that not everyone is affected, as we have hundreds of users changing their passwords every day without having this issue. we have enough users with thi…

Screen savers
by Guest Robert- 7 replies

I run a dual-boot system with XP as my main os, & 98 as the other. I only got a handful of screen savers with XP, but have loads on 98. I am trying to copy some of these to XP. A few worked well by just copping the .SCR file to XP's windows directory & installing it. But this just doesn't work with some of the others, all I end up with is a blank screen. I recon I need more than the .SCR file with these, so I found .DLL's with same name as screen saver & copied these to windows directory, but still no joy. Can anyone help me out here? All the screen savers in question are from Microsoft Plus on win 98, some of which I downloaded from Microsoft …

Registry Question
by Guest bw- 3 replies

I have a new computer. I had backed up my data to an external drive. Using Google Earth as an example, I restored it to its original location (c:\program files\google\google earth) After restoring this entire directory, I was able to run google earth as usual. But, google earth was not in the "Add or Remove Programs" list in the control panel. Why am I able to run google earth if it is not in the "Add or Remove Programs" list? Is google earth in the registry by doing this simple restore? I then "installed" google earth as usual, and the program worked just fine again, but this time, it WAS in the "Add or Remove Programs" list. So I'm curious as…

Slow motion keypress log-in...
by Guest just plain rob- 4 replies

Greetings, On my child's computer, one of the kids were apparently goofing with the Accessibility Control Panel and it got to the point where every key stroke--such as in a text document--took a 2-second press. I undid that setting and typing is fine. Except for log-in. Now, to log in requires they need to hold each key, to a 2 to 3 second count. Sometimes the log-in box does not respond at all. Is her SAM file corrupt? If so, can I remove that thing? I have added users and changed everyone from no password to password in hopes of rewriting a bad file. No go. I did adjust the sensitivity of the Keyboard Control Panel--that's all OK. All out of ideas here a…

Internet Explorer 7 display problems for one user
by Guest Rickster21a- 1 reply

I created a fresh install of Win XP for a single user. After a few weeks, her web pages are not displaying properly: MSN has white backgrounds (the colors are all wrong), fonts are large or in the wrong format, pictures are likewise not in the right locations. I installed a second user, and the web pages display properly. I have check these items: display settings, font size in the video properties, visualy impaired accesability options (I think), and font sizes in IE 7. I know that it is definately something that she inadvertantly changed, or installed, on a user basis, but how do I find it? If anyone has seen this before, please let me know. R…

If I restart the laptop it comes back again,,,, and it may stay for a while (even after going into standy/wake-up several times) but will disappear again within a day. Any adeas on what is going on here??? Frustrated of Aberdeen!

Preparing and restoring disk image...

Hi, We have a datalab with 20 Dell and 20 Compaq computers. Both of these product lines have completely equal hardware. We have made a 'standard' install for each of these two types with drivers, applications and settings. Now we want to sysprep each of them and save the two images to a file server for easy restoring later on. First about sysprep: Does it erase the WSUS client ID stuff too, or do I have to do this manually? Should the workstation have workgroup network connection when sysprep is run (it will be added to the domain during the first startup). Is it possible to specify everything in the sysprep ini file except for the comput…

Set dual-monitor layout (placement) and resolution from command line?
by Guest ajkessel- 5 replies

Cross-posted from microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support after no response there: I posted this earlier inquiry <http://tinyurl.com/26wvsn> regarding lost monitor settings across reboots but got no replies. Here's aquestion about a different approach: Is there any way to set the relative positions of dual-head monitors and the resolution of each from the command line (i.e., with a batch file)? If I can't get Windows to remember my monitor settings across reboots, I'd at least like to be able to run a quick batch file to reset my settings. Is there some way to do this?

My son recently changed the resolution settings some how on our windows xp laptop with service pack 2. When starting the computer after the windows splash screen, the monitor goes black. I have tried to boot with the last known good configuration and the same thing happens, I get a black screen. I have also tried connecting an external monitor and it goes black at the same place. I have tried the function keys with the external monitor setting and that isn't it I went into safe mode and changed the monitor settings and when I r…

NTOS File Removal: Can't Login
by Guest a144mb- 4 replies

I'm running Windows XP, SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 8200. It's a standalone (Workgroup; not on a domain) machine that's PHYSICALLY connected to a Linksys wireless router at my home. I read that an 'ntos' file is a virus. It was on my laptop. I ran Hijackthis.exe (third party virus file remover) on my laptop because I kept seeing this file called 'ntos.exe' in C:\Windows\System32. I also ran Killdisk.exe (third party virus file remover) to remove the file upon bootup. My OS continued to hum right along perfectly. The final thing I did was go into 'regedit' (the registry) and systematically find/remove ALL references of 'C:\Windows\System32\ntos.exe' from my regi…
