Computers on network shutting down
by Guest DougBlakely- 7 replies

I need to get some fresh ideas. We're using a POS system called TRS written in visual BASIC. Network is peer-to-peer, XP pro on all systems. Problem starts at the machine serving the data files for TRS. Windows just shuts down by itself. After serveral restarts, hoping that it was some fluke, the shutdown "spreads" to the client machines! I need an idea for some method(s) for troubleshooting. So far, we have tried: Format/re-install Virus & malware scans using various products Running a nework monitor on a couple of machines until one shuts down. None of the above yields anything helpful. Thanks all! -- Doug Blakely Blakely Communications …

speaker voice + music sound distorted
by Guest dennisW- 2 replies

I noticed that the voice & music sounds from speakers on a friend's pc sounds slightly distorted when playing video (email wmv,eml attachments; youtube videos; etc). I can understand voices + hear music but they sound like they've been sucking Helium. I tried the sound & hardware trouble shooting in Help. Sound, voicde playback device: Realtek AC97 Audio. Settings = 'Full', 'Best'. MIDI music playback='Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synth'. Not sure if the sound was always like this. Is the only solution to find new sound driver or replace older speakers ? Can someone suggest solutions? I apologize for what could be a simple problem. Than…

Somehow my shortcuts to IE (and there isn't one in the IE directory) have disapppeared and my Start-->Search-->For Files or Folders... function brings up a blank search function. IE works if I initialize Windows Upgrade and go to the internet from there. How do I restore these two functions.

Screen issue after installing SP2
by Guest jholland- 4 replies
I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. In the original installation, my screen resolution could be set to 1280x960 with a refresh rate of 75Hz. This was perfect. After upgrading to Service Pack 2, the 1280x960 resolution is blurry when set with a 60Hz refresh rate and won't display at all when set to a 75Hz refresh rate. Is there any way to fix this? Here's my system: Dell Dimension 2200 Intel 82810e Graphics Controller Proview 780 LCD monitor.

I feel sorry, because I now see that I incorrectly phrased my problem. The problem is that my computer spontaniously boots up after some time (>15min) I engaged hibernation. Hi all, I've just upgraded 2 PC's from XP Home to XP Pro. Now, when the users double click IE (6) on their desktop, IE doesn't launch, but a shortcut to IE is created on the desktop. This happens as many times as the users double click the IE icon. Any ideas ? Many thanks. Regards Colin.

I got a virusprotectpro antivirus showing on my quicklaunch toolbar that I have deleted and uninstalled everywhere on my computer and it's still there. When I click it, it takes me to virusprotectpro website to download their antivirus program but there is no unsubscribe/no thanks etc.. anywhere to be found. Does anyone know how I can get this symbol off my quicklaunch toolbar? I've already uninstalled/searched and deleted/restarted/norton scanned and fixed/ and it still won't go away. Please help. -- Kenneth

Windows XP updates in IE6
by Guest Ket- 2 replies

Has anyone experienced the following behavior with IE6? Two PCs on same LAN, one newer then the other but both with XP SP2 and with an ADSL connection. Automatic Updates works fine on both PCs. But the older PC has trouble with manual Windows Updates in IE6 (Tools>Windows Updates), it fails with the standard DNS error page at various points before getting to selecting updates pages. Took the PC back to my office and it works fine on my ADSL (differnet router and ADSL modem). The newer PC works fine in the original office as well. Only the older PC has the problem. Have disabled Norton IS, Windows and the ADSL firewalls. Have added MS update sites to Tr…

disk partitioning
by Guest Joseph O'Brien- 5 replies

I know there is always a lot of opinions when it comes to disk partitioning schemes, but I would like to get some advice from those who know. If I were to put an extra drive in our web designer's computer and ask him to save all his files to that, wouldn't there be a significant delay since everything needs to be copied to the new drive? I'm not just talking about moving a huge number of files. Things as simple as downloading from the web to working with PhotoShop scratch disks are all going to take place on the primary drive, right? So if he needs to download images from a site, he will have to move them manually to the secondary drive. I thought about put…

by Guest UnknownTBeast- 2 replies

I've a CD game from 1996, running on Vista Home Prem.. The game runs fine, but I can not ALT-TAB between the game and any other program running. I can still Cntl+ALT+Del to work around this, but once I close out of the Task Manager, it goes back to the game. Is there any way to set the aplication properties to allow program switching? -Randall

Explore Function
by Guest DRFineman- 1 reply

When I try to explore a large folder using the explore function (e.g. my music in iTunes), my system is only showing me a portion of the folder, not the entire list. I know the music is there because I can play it in iTunes; I just can't find the files using the explore function. Any idea what is causing this and how I can correct the problem? I recently put in a new hard drive on my XP machine and transferred all the data onto the new hard drive. I had no problems viewing all the folders before the new hard drive.
