Can I Erase/Reformat DVD+R DL RW ?
by Guest blongmire@longmire-co.com- 13 replies

Just installed a new dual layer optical drive. Works as expected accept one thing. I can't erase/reformat a DVD+R DL RW disc? I've always been able to do so with a single layer, 4.7 Gb DVD RW disc. I use Nero 7. Nero will erase/reformat a 4.7Gb DVD+R RW but not a dual layer. My guess is the answer is basic. I just don't know it. Please help. Thanks, Bob

Uninstallin Norton 1 2
by Guest norborder- 25 replies

In my less than saavy computer days, I installed "Norton System Works Utilities 2003". When I recently tried to uninstall the software, I get a message similar to: "Uninstall log file not valid or data has been corrupted. Uninstall will not continue." Granted, this has not caused any harm or problems with the computer, but I'd like it off of there. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

by Guest suzywhite- 3 replies
More often than not when I am turning off my computer I get an error box coming up during the "windows is shutting down" blue screen. Its an svchst.exe application error "can't write referenced memory ox....... too quick to write down. The error message is there for a few seconds then disappears on its own and computer goes off no problem. No other problems at all. Happens with both my office and home laptop. Ive run Norton, Adaware, and Spybot - all latest and updated. Nothing found. Would be soooooo grateful for help, please?

System Shuts Down After Sitting Idle
by Guest Loris- 0 replies

I don't know if this the right place to ask this question; if not, please let me know where I should post this. I'm using a Compaq Presario SR1817CL and Windows XP Home. After the system has been sitting dormant for some time, it turns off. When I turn it back on, it tells me that the system is recovering from a fatal error, do I want to send a report. It also stated something about a Promise RAID driver as being a possible problem and that I could uninstall it. What is a RAID driver and could this be the problem and what happens if I uninstall it?

Why does wab /find work from Start > Run but nowhere else?
by Guest ssg31415926- 4 replies

Hi I want to set up a Start Menu item to search for people (a la Windows 2000). A bit of digging reveals that Start > Run wab /find will work. But wab doesn't exist as an executable on my system and the command wab /find won't run from e.g. a command prompt. I guess Microsoft have done something to make it work from Start > Run. Does anyone know what they've done (I like to understand these things) and how I can use it in a shortcut? Thanks in advance SSG

Re: Address Bar and web pages

Re: Address Bar and web pages I have the same issue, and also had the Auto-Complete checked for Web Addesses. I tried the CTRL Enter and that does seem to work, so thanks for that tip. In prior versions of IE, and even sometimes in this version of IE, I didn't have to hit CTRL Enter, it just put it in for me automatcally, which was great. By the way, it is very annoying, to have a nice feature taken out of the product. Thanks for your help, "Imanuker" wrote: > Malvern: Thanks for answering. defrag c: -b<--??
by Guest JW- 4 replies

I found the "tip" below online (search for the first line and you'll find it). Is -b really a parameter of defrag? I can find no mention of it anywhere else. The NOTE says, XP will "run this every three days or so." What does this mean? The "-b" causes XP to run defrag every three days ("or so")? What is this? The -b parameter schedules defrag to run every 3 days (or so)? I'm supicious of the "or so." How can that be? Computers don't do things "or so." TIP----------- *Secret - Hidden Command Line Switch* Instructions - Go to "Start", "Run" and Type defrag c: -b to defragment the Boot and Application Prefetch information. Notes - Windows XP will…

OT: PC Contained in keyboard?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 1 reply

I've seen PC's where everything is contained in the keyboard - even has a DVD drive. My agenda is that a family member has been using an old ThinkPad (Celeron 500mhh, 262kb RAM... slow as death... keeps shutting itself off....doesn't seem to recognize the USB port... CD drive only/no DVD...) and I'm stuck with getting them back online. Seems to me like even if I can get it running/re-imaged, it's not going to have the horsepower to run 2000 Pro. OTOH, my spare PC is an old 1.1mhz Compaq that I rescued from a dumpster and upped the RAM to 640 megs on. It's no flash, but I'd call adequate for the person's intended use. With that in mind, I'd think that …

UPHclean Very Useful for Slow Saving Your Settings on XP
by Guest JohnThePresenter- 1 reply

I must express my thanks for the effectiveness of UPHclean (User Process Hive Cleaner), downloadable from MS page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en For months I have been suffering from very slow "Saving Settings" during shutdown, invariably when I am in a hurry to lock up my laptop and go home. A bunch of web searches revealed that this is normally due to user processes holding on to the registry. Vey good - but bfinding out which process was to blame proved very difficult - I could not see how to get this info from Event Viewer. I finally found the UPHClean download, and …
