Remote Powering
by Guest Ayere- 15 replies

Not exactly sure which group to post this in...: I have an XP SP2 PC that I use exclusively for backups. It resides in another part of the building. We don't want to leave it on all the time, but it's an annoyance to have to physically turn it on (moving to my office it is not practical). Is there a way I can remotely kick it on and off? I thought about allowing it to sleep or hibernate and configuiring the NIC to wake up for activity, but the security of leaving it offline is the reason we turn it off. I know I've just kicked the legs out from under some probable suggestions. Any ideas? Thanks, Ayere

Unable to Access Workgroup Computer
by Guest mcp6453- 2 replies

This problem is happening on only one of the XP computers on my peer-to-peer network. When I "View workgroup computers", all of my networked computers appear. However, if I double click on most of them, I get an error: '\\Server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." The problem is not on \\server as it is accessible from any other computer on the network (so it is not a Server permissions issue, as the error suggests.) If I Start | Run \\Server, I get the same error. If I Start | Run \\192.168.1…

Is there a tool that can search and replace multiple files under all subdirectories recursively? Is there a tool that can search and replace multiple files under all subdirectories recursively? Hi all, In my project, I often need to change the variable names in my programs, and then remember to undo the changes. Let's say, in a forward direction, I need to: change "aaa" to "bbb", change "ccc" to "ddd", change "eee" to "fff", .... in all files under specified directory and its sub-directories, recursively. And in another day, I will have to undo the above changes, i.e. change "bbb" to "aaa", change "ddd" to "ccc", change "fff" to "eee", …

I'm using XP SP2 with all latest update, I use Norton Anti-Virus Enterprise 9 and my anti-virus system. Now, every time when I connect to the Internet and open the IE7, my system will suddenly not responding. If I open some other applications like Firefox before I open the IE7, I can use ALT+TAB to switch to the firefox and work on it, but system still looks hang up, even clock in task bar don't change at all. It will takes around 10 to 20 minutes, and system will come back. I checked with the task manager, everything looks normal, CPU 10% usage, I have enough memory, just explore.exe has some page faults. Hi, I've been using speedfan 4.32 and it has the attribute called "Remote" that I can't make sense of. Even if the ambient temperature is OK, remote is always blazing. Picture - http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=4qxc120 Is it due to the CPU usage? Most importantly, WHICH COMPONENT IS REMOTE? What are its limits? is 70C OK? Regards. -- rAgAv

Canon 830 incompatibility with old printer?
by Guest dobielover- 0 replies
I just installed a Canon 830 with no problem and it functions beautifully. However, now I can't get my Epson 1500 to work even though I have it set as default printer and confirm that it is the one selected for the job. After asking it to print, the printer icon appears very briefly down in the bottom right corner of my screen and then disappears. I called Canon tech assistance a little while ago and was told that I should contact Epson for assistance. I said that it worked very well this morning until installing the Canon so obviously that was the problem, not a printer malfunction. I was then told to uninstall the Canon to see if the Epson worked an…

Problem using Paragon Disk Manager with Win XP Home
by Guest Martin C- 2 replies
A while ago, I obtained a copy of Paragon's Hard Drive Manager V6.01.847 which came as a full (obviously not the latest) program on a PC cover magazine DVD. I was going to use it to resize a couple of my partitions on a single disc to allocate more space to one of the partitions. The OS is on the C drive; Data on the E drive; Apps and Games on the F drive. (D is the DVD/RW) I wanted to shrink E and use the extra space for F (which is now nearly full). However, I have set up 'My Documents' to go onto the E drive. As a result, when I try to resize E, I get the complaint that E volume is in use. Logging out of my account and going back into Administra…

Hi there. I have 3 laptops and 2 desktops all in the same workgroup with static IP addresses. 1 of the desktops and the 3 laptops have no problems sharing files between each other but the 2nd desktop won't "speak" to any of the others. I can ping the other IP addresses from the problem machine (running XP Pro) and access the internet but when I go into "My Network Places" or try to map a network drive it can't find any other PC's on the network !! From the "working" desktop I can see the problem PC but can't connect to it - any idea's anyone please ????? Windows firewall is disabled on all desktops with Norton 360 running with a rule added to let a …

DHCP client and TCP/IP NetBios Helperservice not auto starting
by Guest Jack B. Pollack- 4 replies

Just removed lots of spyware & viruses from a WinXP SP2 computer. After removing all the junk the network connection no longer worked. I have spent the last few days rebuilding the TCP/IP stack, removing winsock etc. Finally I got the internet working again, but am unable to see other computers on the network. I have traced the problem down to 2 services that are not starting DHCP client and TCP/IP NetBios Helper. They are both set to Automatic, but do not start when the computer boots. If I manually start them the startup (quickly) and everything works correctly. Why are they not auto starting and how do I fix this? Thanks
