An annoying occurance has started just recently with my Dell D600 Laptop with external (3rd) party keyboard. Every time I hit the ALT key to ALT+Tab it brings up the My Computer box kind of like a hot key. Likewise, When I hit the Right ALT key it brings up my calculator. I know I must have activated something, but I can not figure out what I hit to make these hotkeys. Any suggestions?

Unable to unlock screen saver
by Guest Kennard V. Wilson Jr.- 1 reply

I have Windows Xp Professional with service pack 2 on my Dell Latitude D600 laptop, and have noticed an unusual problem lately. When in the docking station, if allowed to go into the screensaver (which is locked and passworded), after 3 or so hours you can't CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter your password and unlock the screensaver. It doesn't come up. Hasn't any one else seen this problem and how does one get around it? Thanks. - Kennard

I've got a WinXP Pro SP2 computer that has not been hooked up to the internet, and so has not run Windows Update, for at least two years (maybe three). The computer is stable. Is there a recommended practice for installing all the updates that I will see when I finally hook it up and run Windows Update? Any there updates recommended to install first? Thanks! Pat

by Guest Bill Fisher- 1 reply

I am trying to set up my win2k pro machine as an IPP print server but I can't get the printer web page to load,. instead, I get an http error # 500 "page cannot be displayed". When I browse to http://printserver/printers I get the prompt to enter the user name and the password and then I get the above described error. I get this error when browsing from both the client (an xp machine) and the server (the win2k machine). Note that in my router setup I have forwarded TCP port # 631 to the win2k machine. Other web pages on this IIS server work fine. I can access them without any problems so there is nothing wrong with my IIS setup.(or so I think). If anyon…

Workgroup Browse Problem
by Guest mcp6453- 1 reply

One of my XP computers has developed a problem that appears to be DNS related. Initially I was unable to see the Workgroup computers in My Network Places (clicking on "View workgroup computers." After going through the "Set up a home or office network" wizard again, I can see the networked computers, but clicking on the icons gives an "U\\computer is not accessible" error. If I browse to the networked computer with the IP address (Start | Run \\192.168.1.xx), everything works fine. The problem is not just reaching the one computer, it is with all networked computers.) Therefore, it seems to me that something in connection with DNS is hosed on the comp…

IS this caused by a virus?
by Guest DFIGTREE- 4 replies

I run Zonealarm which has been cleaning a few viruses lately. Checking out from some e-store the other day, ZoneAlarm detected a dialup connection being added. Long story short, I had to pull the plug to get the computer to shut down. Since then, when I boot and reach the point where the wallpaper and icons should appear on my monitor, my monitor goes blank but I can hear the startups being loaded. Can a virus take over the monitor and blank it out (and maybe use the mouse in secrecy)? The only ZoneAlarm info I still have is this ... TROJAN.DOWNLOADER.JAVA, TROJAN.IS.AGENTB, TROJAN=SPY HTML.ANAL, WIN32.ISBAR.450, WIN32.TROJAN.PSW.G... These have bee…

Downgrading from XP Pro to Win 98SE
by Guest Jim H.- 11 replies

It's way past time for me to get a faster computer than my P2 running 98SE. So, I got this ASUS P4 machine from a friend but it has a bogus copy of XP on it and I'm unwilling to do that. For my purposes, 98SE is just fine so I'd like to retire my P2 machine and put legal copy of 98SE on the P4 and then reload my Office 97. Can I do that? How would it go? What I have is a full copy of Win 95 and an upgrade CD to Win 98. Do I have to reformat the hard drive and start all over or can I upgrade directly from XP Pro to Win 98 and then download the SE upgrade from microsoft? Now I know someone out there is going to suggest I'm not too bright doing this downg…

Receiving a Fax
by Guest Alex- 2 replies

I am having a problem receiving a fax. I have a DSL connection to my computer along with standard phone plugged into the fax modem. I am able to send a fax without any problem. I even have a seperate number for the fax within the same line (a Qwest product called custon ringing). The computer is recognizing the telephone ring, and attempts to answer on the designated ring, but doe not. Therefore, it locks up the line. I have even had a friend attempt to send a fax to me and their machine continues to auto redial. But yet, I can call via my cell phone and get a ring, to which the computer will see, and it will say it is answering, but no answer on my cell p…

Location of cookies and downloaded videos
by Guest Pete- 6 replies

In the old days I could find the cookies on my system by just searching for "cookies" but now IE has the option to eliminate them. But where are those cookies actually stored now (which folder)? And when I view a "video on demand" where are those files stored? Sure, I can use Disk Cleanup to eliminate downloded videos and other things, but I really like to know how things work on my XP Pro PC. I'm running IE7, if it matters. Thanks. -- Pete
