XP Destroying MBR on re-install
by Guest Steve Wright- 8 replies

Hi, Quite a complex one this one - please excuse. Problem 1. When booting up XP stalls. It will boot via "safe mode" and "safe mode with networking" but VGA mode totally dies. Has happened 3 times in the last month. I am not aware of what the problem is that causes this. I've done a full virus scan and found no problems. Problem 2. To resolve problem 1 it tried to perform a fresh install (repair install wouldn't stick) on the hard drive. The files are copied but when the machine reboots the MBR is totally screwed and the machine cannot now boot at all. The disk is TOTALLY RUINED as a bootable disk. This is the third time this has happened. To b…

Hello peeps, I came home from work last night, and when i turned on my pc I noticed that when ever i open a new window it dose not show up on the taskbar! I went to the properties and everything was how i always have it set up!? I normaly have the quick launch on the left next to the start button and the language bar in the right. The open windows normaly show up on the blank blue space in the middle on the taskbar, but they dont. If i press ALT+TAB the open windows show up in a box in the middle of my screen but not on the taskbar. Sorry, you did say "laptops" and I didn't notice. Event logs might help, perhaps....but I'm adding a crosspost to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general to cast a wider net (as this is a client issue, too). > > "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" wrote: > >> Rich Wethington <RichWethington@disc…

Odd XP ?
by Guest philo- 7 replies

My neighbor gave me a bunch of left-over parts from an upgrade... (An AMD_64-3200 mobo and a few HD's 100 & 250 gig.) I built a machine from them and decided to see if the machine would boot from either of the drives. One of the drives started to boot to XP...then crashed. I slaved the drive to another machine to see what was on it...and there was no Windows (or Winnt) folder... but oddest of all...*no* root directory files...which means boot.ini is not even present... How the heck could it have started to boot XP? BTW: No .chk files were written nor did chkdsk find any problems

How to Open A Port
by Guest Alastair MacFarlane- 2 replies

Dear Group, I have created a Visual basic program that communicates through Port 87 and works fine at work but at home I get an error: "Socket not Bound..." If I type the following: telnet 170.50.1.1 87 Could not open a connection with the host on port 87: connection failed. How can I open up port 87 to my test program? I have tried going into the network connections and opening up my firewall settings and adding a Firewall Exception and adding a Port e.g TCP 87. I have even gone to the advanced settings in the Services to add the port as well but I am confused. I still get the error. The only difference is that in work I am running Windows XP P…

Cannot install or upgrade applications
by Guest ChesapkLady- 1 reply

I have been unable to install new applications or upgrades to my Dell laptop running XP SP2. I've been getting the message that I have to be the administrator in order to do this. So today I started my laptop in Safe Mode, and signed on as "the" administrator to try to install PhotoShop Elements 5. It wouldn't install. I got an error message that tells me that the application has to close. When I sent the error report to Microsoft and clicked on "more information" it told me that "this problem was caused by Windows. Microsoft has no solution for this problem at this time." So then I tried to do it by going to "add programs" in control panel. I got a pop u…

The error occurs when I click on a user other than myself from the welcome screen or when I switch users from log off and the new user page loads. Java jre1.6.0_02 auto update
by Guest Agzee- 6 replies

This evening I had a 'pop-up' on screen advising me that a new version of Java was available (ver. 1.6.0_02) and I clicked to enable automatic download and installation of the new version. The installaltion went fine and the new version is installed although when I check C:/Program Files/Java there are two folders:- jre 1.6.0_01 and jre 1.6.0_02 Obviously the new installation did not remove the old version of Java, therefore decided to remove the old version via Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. When I checked for Java jre 1.6.0_01 in order to remove it I come across two Java entries listed as:- Java SE Runtime Environment 6 update 1 Java Update…
