Shutdown problems
by Guest Francisco Gomez- 5 replies

I have shutdown problems problems with a laptop with Windows XP Professional Edition SP2 installed on it. It ALLWAYS hangs (stops responding), so I allways must power off by keeping power button pressed for 5 seconds. If I boot in safe mode, I have no problems on shutdown. It doesent't look like related to software installed by users (except, may be, antivirus), becouse I have this problem even when I try to shuttdown from 'welcome screen', when I haven't still loged on with any user. I have tried to use /bootlog option, and readed ntbtlog.txt, but I can't find any 'Terminate' and 'EndTerminate' sections. Are theese sections only present on BOOTLOG.tx…

power toolbar on taskbar lost
by Guest lili- 3 replies

The power management "toolbar" (the little picture of the battery and power plug) was inadvertently closed. How do I retrieve it? I tried opening the "power options" window from the control panel, but the only option I found for displaying anything about power management on the taskbar was "Always show icon on the taskbar". When I checked this box, a little plug icon showed up to the right of the arrow that expands the hidden taskbar icons, but that is not the icon I have lost, and it is not in the same location on the taskbar. The icon that has always been there - and that I want back - is of a horizontally oriented battery, with the amount of charge …

The relocation occurred because the DLL C:WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows systems DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL". I have been told to do all Microsoft updates and i have but no joy! can anyone help me please!!! Thank you in advance.

Registry Changes Do Not Save
by Guest stewart- 5 replies

Have XP home setup to login automatically. Have a screensaver set. When I leave the computer running and reboot, it prompts me for the password and the screensaver is off. My workaround was to find the location in the registry for these 2 items and export it to the desktop. Right before I reboot I run the exported .reg file. Now on another computer I set it up for wireless. The Trendnet software didn't work so I told Windows to manage my wireless connection. I set a static IP address. When I reboot, these settings are reverted back. Is there some KB article or something on registry modifications that don't save on reboot? thanks stewart

Windows XP Professional - Task Bar
by Guest Trish- 13 replies

Hi, For about a week now, I keep losing IE from my task bar. I then go to the start menu, press Ctrl and drag a copy of IE7 onto my task bar. It remains there until I log off, and is not there when I log on again. Since I use this numerous times daily, it is quite frustrating. The task bar is unlocked. Many thanks.

by Guest Kenny Lee- 1 reply

-- I was wondering if you might be able to help me with something. I was curious as to why icons near the clock (the start up items) are never in the same place when you either turn off your computer or laptop and turn it on again or you do a re-start. Can you please tell me that and what causes this as well. Thank you and have a great day!!! Kenny Lee

Trying to start a hardware firewall solution - advice required
by Guest Lester Stiefel- 1 reply

I have a hardware firewall ready to use, but still require advice on some items the firewall traps. From indicators I have verified the services or applications to be "dllhost" and "svchost" from a trial firewall software solution, which has(d) the same behavior. The question is 'where can I find information on what ports either dllhost or svchost would use (in addition to 80).' -- Lester Stiefel Visit Family Radio Today http://www.familyradio.com/

Networking problem
by Guest Bob Urz- 7 replies

I am trying to link a desktop intel 865 machine together with a HP Z8000 AMD laptop to transfer files. These machines have not been networked before. After much configuration and work (I am not a network expert), I got both machines set up though a wireless router using two hardwired ethernet ports. Both machines are setup DHCP with guest accounts activated. I have a shared files folder set up on each machine. I finally got it to the point that from the desktop i can ping the ip of the laptop (192.168.1.102) and get a response. and I can ping the desktop from the laptop. but, i cannot see the remote machines in windows explorer or under networking MSHOME. …
