Guest Access only on LAN peer to peer
by Guest John In Palmer- 3 replies

Good morning, I recently ran into an issue on a peer to peer network that would not let me connect to other machines on the same workgroup. All machines could see each other just fine, however; when attempting to connect to another machine, it would display the appropriate log in screen, but with the Guest profile account selected and grayed out (no other option to put in a seperate profile was available) and only the password field was available. Currently, I have the Guest accounts on all of these machines disabled for security reasons. These are all Windows XP Professional machines, newer Dell hardware, I have disabled all Firewall software (Norton Int…

Lost Printer Ports
by Guest man- 0 replies
I am running WinXP Pro SP2. I deleted a couple of IP Ports in the Printer Properties Ports window. I then rebooted, and when the system came back up there are no longer any ports at all listed in the Ports window of the Printer Properties window. In addition, the print spooler service now starts and stops immediately, then starts and stops again in an endless loop. I have tried to do a system restore to three different restore points, and all have failed. I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers, all to no avail. I can not add a printer, as it fails because I can not see or select any ports in the drop down list of that wizard. Can someone …

Hi I had a problem with XP not able to get in and repaired from the XP disk. Works OK but- my son had a user account in his name with a password. He cannot get into his folder ( Freds Documents) as the system says access denied. We tried setting up a profile again with the same user name and password but the system will not let him. Is there any way to get access to this folder? He has a record deal with a company online and the songs he recorded are in that folder and not backed up!! Any help appreciated Thanks

A Couple of Questions About Recycle Bins
by Guest jim evans- 4 replies

Question 1 One of my drives has two folders with the Trash Basket icon. One is named Recycled and the other Recycle Bin. Why are there two and what's the difference between them? Question 2 Are file deletions segregated by drive? That is, a file deleted on drive H goes in H's recycle bin and no deleted files from another drive ever go in H's bin. jim

Transferring files
by Guest TonyPH- 5 replies
I want to transfer files and settings from 98SE to XP Pro, using a serial cable. The Transfer Wizard instructions imply that I need a monitor for my old computer as well as my new one. Is this right, or have I missed something? I have only one monitor and connecting and re-connecting could be a nuisance. Is there a device that will switch the monitor from one computer to the other? My old computer has USB 1.0, so a flash drive is not possible, and I do not know enough to move the hard drive to my new computer, so I would have to pay somebody. Thanks in advance for your help. by Guest rchapman- 5 replies

I just started getting this blue screen on shutdown that says something about a corrupted driver or software. It says to check newly installed hardware or software. I installed a new monitor, a usb wireless adapter and a wireless logitech keyboard mouse in the past few days. They all work grerat and I looked under device manager for improperly working devices/drivers and seen nothing. It also says I may need a Windows Update. I do not let my pc do automatic updates since the worm years ago. I have WinXP Home. My pc runs smoothly except for the screen on shutdown. At the bottom of the screen it says something about physical memory dump with some kind of a …

Can you set process priority for an exe?
by Guest dean- 19 replies
Hello all, I regularly run Borland's compiler (CBuilder 6.0) at work as a full time developer, but when it compiles it hogs nearly all of the machine's CPU time, and all other apps are very unresponsive. If I set the priority level of the process to LOW, then everything works fine and the program still runs just the same. How can I set the priority level on an application such as this? I right-click on the shortcut and can't see anything related to priority levels. Thanks! Dean
