Hi there, I have the following error: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM I have tried following a knowledge base article (kb307545) which says to repair the files, however in DOS I cannot navigate to the system32 directory. So I have 2 questions: 1. How am I supposed to repair operating system if the directory is corrupted? 2. Is it possible to mount a USB hard disk and remove important data before rebuilding? Cheers, Simon

I got the recommendation for this app. add-on from I believe a couple of different sources in this group. I just want to extend my thanks for such a nice addition to OE. I'm not sure whose dictionary it uses, but it suits my purpose. I too, will highly recommend it. -- HTH, Curt Windows Support Center http://www.aumha.org Practically Nerded,... http://dundats.mvps.org/Index.htm

How to change settings for a limited user?
by Guest Frank Rizzo- 4 replies

Hello, My Windows XP PC has an Admin account and several limited User accounts. How can I, as an admin, change settings on a user account? For the sake of discussion, let's say I want to change the Power settings: I want the monitor to turn off after 4 hours of the computer being idle. Right now, I login to the user account, open the power applet, try to change the setting and appropriately get "Access Denied". How can I tell Windows XP that I am the admin and that it is OK for me to change those values? Or better yet, how can I do the same thing to this user, but while I am logged in my own Admin account. Thanks.

My sister jsut gave me her PC and she is telling me that she turned her PC on and now all the pictures in her My Pictures folder are very small. They are all only 2 KB in size and everyone has been renamed with a ~ in front. An example is ~627910d49f0311c6.jpg I have asked her what she did so I can try and trouble shoot this but she says she did nothing. I tried a system restore and had no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions how I may be able to get the pictures back to their original sizes? thanks

by Guest rb- 4 replies

Just got an error message of a type I haven't seen before, about a file I've never seen or heard of. The error message is telling me: 1. the file can't be saved 2. the data in the file is lost 3. try to save the file to another location. One of several problems here is I have no idea where the file they're talking about currently is. Nothing is showing as open. Here's the text: "Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere" How do I find out what's going on, here, and f…
