sound not working suddenly
by Guest Richard H Paul- 3 replies
all of a sudden the sound stopped working on most of the applications, but strangely, Music Match Jukebox still has sound. The other media players don't work, I get nothing from internet videos, etc. I am running WinXP Home Edition on a Dell Dimension 4600 PC. I've never had this problem before. When I open up the Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio I see grayed out areas and the Sound Card is not present. Instead the dropdown list says: Modem 0 or something like that. What could have caused this to happen and how to fix it? thanks

I just did a Windows XP Pro repair installation and now when I click on Control Panel I get an alert window. The title is IntelĀ® PROSet and the message is "Resources are not available." When I click OK, the Control Panel opens. I don't have a wireless adapter on my PC which is what the Intel PROSet refers to.

A strange message at start up
by Guest nasser jamal- 0 replies

Dear members, Since three days ago I started getting the following message: -- Hard Drive configuration recovery. This menu allows you to select a hardware profile. If your system is not starting correctly, then you may switch to a previous system configuration, which may overcome stat up problems. Important, system configuration changes made since the last successful start up will be discarded. Profile 2 Profile 1 To go on I just press enter and it goes on as usual, what caused this message to appear, although I did not change anything of the setting, how can get it back to start without this message appearing.? nasser

Uninstalltion Problem
by Guest JAG CHAN- 4 replies

I am using Windows XP with SP2. I had installed a third party Software. When I uninstalled the software using Windows Add or Remove Program, uninstallation was partial. When I tried to remove the balance portion through Registry again I could remove only part of the software. When I tried to remove the last piece I got the message: "Cannot delete error while deleting key. When I tried to remove the sub keys I got the message "Unable to delete all specified values". Is there any way I can remove the software completely from my PC. Thanks.

transferring files from infected drive.
by Guest Joseph O'Brien- 4 replies

Hello, everyone. I have a computer that has been infected with a virus/ worm/trojan/whatever. I'm not completely sure which one, but my computer does the automatic shutdown thing (initiated by NT Authority \System). I think I have the virus cleaned off, but the OS has been damaged. Can someone who knows advise me on the plan below? 1) Remove suspect drive from PC. Replace with a new, store-bought drive. 2) Install clean OS, updates programs, virus scan, etc. 3) Re-attach suspect drive as slave. 4) Copy necessary files over from suspect drive, leaving out Program Files and anything in ~\Local Settings. I do have backups, but they are most likely infected …

I have searched this group and the solutions listed for this particular problem have not been effective, so I'm going to start a brand-new thread and hope for the best. Windows XP will not install this update. I have tried the downloadable tools/programs here -- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=927891 -- and they also quit. What follows below is a number of updates that will not install or "fail" installation: Security Update for Windows XP (KB920670) Security Update for Windows XP (KB920683) Update for Windows XP (KB922582) Security Update for Windows XP (KB919007) Security Update for Windows XP (KB920685) Update for Windows XP (KB920872) Sec…

by Guest RJK- 4 replies

....yeah ...yeah ...yeah, ....I've waded through aumha.org Shutdown problems, and Google'd and read..half the day, tweaked bios settings and rebooted, it feels, a THOUSAND times, (it must add up to at LEAST half a day), and I've stuffed in and ripped out EVERY SINGLE lump of driver forceware that NVIDIA ever produced !! ...so pleeeeeeeeeeez, I am simply posting in the hope that someone has hit a VERY similar problem on VERY similar hardware, ....I'm getting a bit too old to spend more than most of a whole day problem solving this s*****g thing ! :-) What makes it really annoying, of course, is that I can easily live without "hibernate" but, that would be …

Print Spooler hangs the system
by Guest Bill Melke- 2 replies

I was trying to upgrade Internet Explorer when the system froze. Since then, every time I started the computer, it would hang. I found the guilty process to be the spool server using 99% of the CPU. If I stop the print spooler the problem goes away. I looked at spoolsv.exe and it has not been modified since Friday, June 10, 2005. Any suggestions? THANKS -- Bill

% Used Hard Drive Space VS. Computer Speed
by Guest Justin- 9 replies

Does the bigger percentage of hard drive space used mean the slower the speed of your computer? I have 2 internal hard drives in my laptop and I am deciding whether I should install programs such as games on the hard drive which does not contain windows xp so that the program does not slow my computer (login speed, etc.)
