I will be upgrading a computer from a gigabyte GA-K8NS MB/AMD 3000+ to a Biostar 6100-M9 939/AMD A64 X2 4200+. According to MS I will need to do a WinXP HE "upgrade": http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125 I've never seen the upgrade option on the XP install disk, just install, repair and the typical safe modes, etc. Am I missing something?

If I enable Automatic Updates for WinXP, it will only install CRITICAL updates, right? IOW, it won't update IE6 to IE7, or WMP10 to WMP11, for example?

Chkdsk Trouble
by Guest Kiriu- 13 replies

ZOMG, PLZ HLP MEH! A few days ago I got an error message, saying that one of my files was corrupt, and that I needed to run chkdsk. I've tried to do so, both manually, with the "cmd" in the Run dialogue box, and on the booting up. When I try to restart my computer, I get the message that the drive cannot be accessed. My C: drive, where everything is, is not an FAT32 or FAT drive, it's one of those NFTS or whatevers. The only solution I've been able to find (and it doesn't work!) is to install Windows Service Pack 2. I already HAVE WSP2, and I'm lost as to what to do. Please help me. I don't know what's happening, but my entire Downloads file fo…

Does anyone know how to change the default so that when you open an application, the window is already maximized? I just replaced my monitor with an LCD with a screen resolution of 1440 x 900 and all windows open about half-size of the actual screen. Thanks

Can't Open System32\Drivers folder
by Guest Pete- 0 replies

I cannot open the windows\system32\drivers folder. If I click on it with Windows Explorer I get the following error: "Refers to a location that is not available ..." If I right click on the folder and select properties the Size and Size on Disk show as 0 bytes and that it contains 0 files and 0 folders. I also cannot open the folder in Safe Mode. Yet, if I boot WindowsXP using Bart PE on my Flash Drive I can open the folder and see all the driver files it contains. If I boot with DOS and select the folder I get the following message: "Path not found" I seem to have the correct permissions - I am in the Admin Group Booting from the Flash Drive I was abl…

The icon in my taskbar doesnt show communication to the websight.. Any ideas? (Ive tried to be as thorough as I can,,,)

I've lost the icon(s) for Images on my laptop
by Guest Euro Djuro- 2 replies

Hi, I have a Dell laptop running windows xp SP2 and I've just lost the windows fax and pricture viewer icon that normally represents all the jpgs and images that I have on the laptop. Instead I have the generic windows file icon (the one that does not know what the file type is). Before this happened, I updated Adobe and uninstalled the Adobe photoshop manager that is downloaded as part of upgrading to v.8 of Adobe reader. Does anyone know how I can get this default Icon back? Regards EuroDjuro

Can't get pass windows logon in safe mode. Now I'm Stuck!!
by Guest romac- 12 replies

I'm running XP Pro. I was in the process of a virus removal. The removal tool told me to start up in safe mode as the first step. I went into msconfig and changed startup to safe mode and then restart. Now I get the windows logon prompt with the user name filled in and a blank password field. I typed in the password (it's the same as user) and I get the logon message : "system could not log you on" Now I'm stuck at safe mode logon. How can I bypass so I can continue the steps for me to remove the virus? Or how can I get back to normal mode? Thanks in advance people.
