by Guest janice- 1 reply

I've just started getting the message: "Please Wait While Windows Configures Fax". Then it tells me something about a disk. This appears to have started after I installed Windows XP SP3. I also have been getting - for a long time - a message are Windows Installer. Am I asking about too many things in the thread? Any suggestions? Remove SP3? The Fax came with a HP 4-in-one printer (2410xi photosmart) Thanks. Janice

Suddenly Having Problems!
by Guest JD- 1 reply

Hi, I recently installed TM Internet Security 2008 and some time during that process shutdown improperly. When I restarted some type of diagnostic screen came up and seemed to be checking the hard drive for failure. Anyway here's what I've been getting now: on startup the Win XP progress bar/screen is on as it always has. Now before it gets to the user logins, the screen goes black momentarily and flashes the "energy blue" background, which none of the users are utilizing, before settling on the login screen. Also the same happens when switching between users: black screen, "energy blue", then user login. Occasionally I get the "windows cannot lo…

How to fix one of two installs c:\windows and c:\windows2 ?
by Guest LoneTreeTechy- 4 replies
My original Windows XP Home edition became corrupt and the blue screen kept coming up due to bad video drivers. If I disable the blue screen, the machine would just reboot itself over and over. I tried removing the bad drivers, safe mode, command prompt, various Windows repair utilities... Finally I just used the included OEM Windows repair CD and it let me install a second instance of Windows on the same file system - I installed it to c:\windows2. All my files and programs are physically on the disk, but I can't run Office, for example, nor can I seem to access my old user profiles, settings, etc. I don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling…

Is this a virus? Taskbar has gone!
by Guest T- 1 reply
My computer running XP Professional suffered a sudden slow down and the Taskbar shrank is size. After a reboot the Taskbar disappeared. It is not hidden as the start menu does not respond to the Windows Flag key. I reformatted the drive only to have the same problem reoccur a day later. I reloaded using the original media which I have successfully used before. I did however use fresh copies of Avast Anti Virus and Zonealarm downloaded with another PC and scanned with Avast which indicated that they are both clean. The only explanation I can think of is a boot sector virus. Is this possible after the disc was reformatted and is their a way I can know for s…

Possible program transfer?
by Guest Sirius- 11 replies

Hello, My older friend is at it again, he thinks I'm some sort of a wiz who can do pretty much anything with his pcs. He wants me to transfer MS Word 2003 from his 5 year old pc to his new Vista pc without the installation disk! It came preinstalled. And he can't get used to the 2007 version. I'd hate to disappoint him so I said I'll find out what can be done. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe it's possible. Of course we would take it off the old one to prevent copy violation. I would not even know how to get started. I guess I need to take the folder from Prog Files, then there must be some in other ones like App data, common files, s…

I have infected files that are essential to the WindowsXP pro operating system. These are: C:\Windows\Config\csrss.exe C:\Windows\Config\supdate.exe Therefore I ask: can I delete these two infected files, and then just copy the original clean ones from the original WindowsXP installation disks? Please advise how this should be done. Please help, Frank

I find this a very odd quirk of XP SP3 which on a brand new OS installation as well as old sp2 and the upgrade to sp3 via WU, I started noticing certain files were locked and I couldnt delete them etc... Long story short I found out that the programs that I had used to access those files even though were terminated correctly and without any errors were indeed still showing running under the taskmanager running allowng and consuming resources. Theres many programs that do this like IE or winrara or Flashfxp or any other program I can think about. Im not exactly what you would call a newb and this was certainly not my first OS install in fact I can see m…

Over the past few days I have been getting the following error message. "The instruction at 0X 05120198 referenced memory at 0X1c4c23415. The memory could not be written" (The numerics after the 0X's change each time. The above #'s were the most recent ones). Can anyone tell me what this is and how it can be fixed...Thanks kindly
