New Users and Recent Docs
by Guest j- 0 replies

I recently added a new user on my computer. They are limited, meaning they can only access shared files, etc. Afterwards, I noticed that none of the documents taht I open appear in recent documents. When I go to Start, Control Panel, Advanced to take a look at whether or not recent documents are selected to show on the Start Up Menu. When I do this, I get an error message saying that "access to recent is denied." Did adding a new user cause this, any ideas?

Hi all, I'm curious, if I'm just viewing images from a CD (not stored on my C Drive), are those photos cached somewhere on my hard drive? I'm just viewing them using Windows Explorer 'Preview' option or even the image viewer. Thanks

How do I keep Windows "copy files" from dying on an error?
by Guest George Adams- 2 replies
I'm trying to backup my hard drive by dragging/dropping certain big folders from my main PC (running XP Pro) to my external backup drive. Often I'll drag a huge folder with thousands of files to the backup drive. Many times I'll have a situation where several hundred files are copied over the course maybe 30 minutes, when suddenly I get an error such as: Error Copying File or Folder Access denied The source file may be in use. Now, often it's a file that I don't really care about, so I'd be happy if Windows just ignored it and kept going with the copy. Instead, the entire copy operating grinds to a halt, and there's no easy way for me to resume …

Acronis Universal Restore
by Guest voipfc- 8 replies

I am getting a new computer and I plan to transfer the old computer to it without having to reinstall all the programs again. Can Acronis True Image with its Universal Restore option do the job well enough? Are there any good experiences with it? Having to reinstall all the programs again will be a huge problem. There is also the issue of the Windows XP license. The old machine will also be in use and I want to avoid problems with Windows Updates. Will it be possible to replace the license key on the new machine with its original license after the copy? - voipfc

Hello All, I have a Windows XP desktop on our factory floor. When this computer boots, certain processes need to finish before users can click on icons, start programs, etc. Unfortunately, this is not happening (users are clicking on icons too quickly). Is there a way to delay the appearance of the XP desktop via a setting or GPO? Thanks -- Gregg

How can I redirect stdout and stderr to the same file from a Windows command line? I know how to redirect them to different files: myprog >stdout.log 2>stderr.log but I need them in the same file. Remote desktop - copy paste
by Guest *69- 1 reply

Copy paste works between my workstation and screens within remote desktop. However, is there a way that I can enable the copy of a rather lengthy password stored on my pc to the remote desktop logon screen? I know it doesn't sound secure, but it would certainly meet my needs. I am using XP Pro.

Question on Remote Desktop Connection
by Guest Jethro- 5 replies

I have two machines and wonder if XP Remote Desktop can be set up so that either one can operate the other. That is, normally one would have a host and one or more remotes. I have what I described before - namely two machines, so-called LEFT and RIGHT. I have Remote Desktop now set up so that the LEFT machine can indeed connect to the RIGHT machine and operate applications etc on the RIGHT machine, all the whilst locking out users on the RIGHT machine. I want to leave that intact, but set up the reverse - namely I want to execute applications on the LEFT machine from the RIGHT machine. Can I do that? I can't seem to get the RIGHT machine to set such a con…
