Hi, I am using XP Professional. On my Task Bar (immediately to the right of the Start button) I have a few icons, and IE7 was definitely there, but has suddenly disappeared. It has not disappeared as an unused icon, as I use it all the time! How can I get it back there, and any suggestions as to why it disappeared? Many thanks. Trish

New Hardward Wizard opens at boot up for USB Video Adapter VA11A
by Guest Alabama Yankee- 0 replies

I am using a Compaq Presario SR1710NX with Windows XP and SP2. I have a X10 Wireless Camera System hooked into my computer. Included with the system is a X10 USB Digital Video Converter. Even though I have installed the software for the Converter, and it is working just fine, each and every time that I boot up my computer, the New Hardware Wizard opens up, and wants me to install the software for the particular piece of hardware. I have to close the New Hardware Wizard every time, because if I try to install what it wants me to install (which is already installed), I end up with the "Blue Screen of Death", and have to do a hard shutdown on my computer a…

Standby mode stops working after Service Pack 2 installation
by Guest martin0820- 2 replies

Standby mode worked _flawlessly_ for years, until I installed SP 2 last week. Now, when going into standby mode either manually or based on power management settings, about 25% of the time the following occurrs: the video turns off but the PC freezes with the fans and disk drives running. A reboot is necessary to recover. The SP 2 installation executed without any errors, and absolutely NOTHING, other than SP 2 having been installed (not even a screen saver) was changed. The BIOS looks like it's set correctly to auto detect hibernate or suspend. The PC in question is an Asus P4P800E mb, Radeon 9600, P4 3.0, 1 GB RAM. It is otherwise very stable and ru…

by Guest Guy DeStefano- 8 replies

From the start menu, when I try to access the ( Help and Support ) menu, It does not do anything. There is a small disk light flicker, then absolutely nothing. Also in any of the MS Office products, in the About menu, there is a menu item for ( System Information ). I used to be able to view my system information with that. Now it too is gone. Just click it in any of the programs, and it is gone. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Print preview different than what is printed
by Guest qcrob- 4 replies

I am printing an excel document using win xp and a usb cable connected to a Samsung ML-1710. The print preview shows everything is in its proper place. When the document is actually printed, a number of problems exist. These are, cutting off text at the bottom of page, omitting footer, moving the header to the left side of page and shifting text to the right slightly. I have reinstalled the printer driver and Samsung says it is a problem with the program used to print (excel). Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem?

"NTVDM.EXE has encountered a problem" + hotfix 890067 failed
by Guest martin0820- 0 replies
16-bit applications no longer run on my PC. This includes a part of Adobe Lightroom (!) that checks periodically for photos to download (apdproxy.exe). If it is attempted to run a 16-bit application, Windows reports the error: "NTVDM has encountered a problem and needs to close." Until recently, 16-bit applications ran OK. I'm not sure what caused this problem; it may have been installiing Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, or it may be that this application uncovered the problem. I obtained hotfix 890076 from Microsoft and installed it with no errors reported. Per the associated knowledge base article, the files listed below are supposed to updat…

Power Options does not run -- get RUNDLL error
by Guest Dan- 1 reply

My laptop goes into standby when I close the lid, so I want to change the power options. When I click on Power Options, I get the following: An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\powercfg.cpl",Power Options" When I go to this directory, the other *.cpl commands work (like accessibility and add and remove programs). This is on a ThinkPad T42. Any ideas?

can't display above 640x480
by Guest alice- 7 replies
I'm trying to fix a PC that can't get the display above 640x480. The monitor is a viewsonic VE510b, which is listed 3 times under Monitor in the hardware list, and the display Adapters listed are Inet 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family, listed twice. I've tried clicking on Update driver on all these, and it can't find any better versions. When I do a windows update, it lists a driver for the monitor, but the update fails, with no reason given as to why. I can attempt to set the resolution up to 1024x700, but nothing changes, it just reverts back to 640. What should I look into at this point, replacing the video adapter?
