Win XP Pro, 40 GB HD about half full, IBM notebook: I appear to have a lot of stuff [59 ?] starting when I start the computer - [1] So what can I safely do to reduce this mess, and will reducing the number probably make the machine work a bit faster ? Is there any particular number of startup programs that I should expect ? [2] Has anyone a comment about WinTasks 5 ? TIA

XP + MSN + Worm - System now unstable
by Guest John Reinders- 5 replies

Hi, The other day (Monday) my son inadvertently (and I have warned him about doing this) opened a file (zip containing a .scr) he received from someone he's known for awhile on MSN and low and behold his system became infected. AVG reported the offending worm as: Trojan Horse Downloader Generic5.ETN and .SOZ Not sure of the actual name of it... Infected files, vnttgb.exe, notify.dll, printers.exe, 1(l)p6fw.sys, DefLib.sys and oocmhxl.exe... He ended up with multiple cascading MSN windows, he hit Ctrl Alt Del to stop it, he momentarily saw the process that was running, but then all processes disappeared from process manager? He no longer is able t…

Lately I've had occurences of the following folder appearing on the desktop and in the C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah Back\My Documents\%USERPROFILE%. It is an actual folder not a variable appearing in both locations. I can remove it and things are fine. Ad-Aware, Virus Scan and Rootkit Detector turn up no results. Checked the registry and found nothing to explain this behavior. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks in Advance

i bought a new tv card 'Flytv Cardbus LR502'. İn lifeview tvr program, the 'lvtv.dll' has broken. i did whatever i can do, but nothing changed. i tried to install another program but when i click setup.exe, this appears. " The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL." i installed KB935448 but i didnt work. what should i do for fixing user32.dll?

DOS issue in XP
by Guest Ratedr- 6 replies

I have a DOS based program that I want to run in XP. Now the problem is not that it wont start, or run in XP. It will, I have in fact seen it. I formatted and installed 4 new computers with XP Pro. I installed the DOS program onto the computer. On EVERY one of the computers, when I open the program it gives me an error "system cannot open com1 requested by the application" (some say com2, etc) My current COM port is not 1, but when I try to change it to COM1 and open the program, the program now says "system cannot open com2 requested by the application". Does anyone have any suggestions? I cannot find any config file where it would be requesting any spe…

Going from Office 97 to Office 2003 should I remove Office 97 first and do a fresh install of 2003? Or should I just upgrade? Does it matter either way?

Understanding System Restore
by Guest John Carlson- 9 replies

A question about how System Restore works, and what state it leaves my system in. Suppose that, on July 15, I make a change to my computer -- installing some piece of software, perhaps -- that causes a serious problem. I recover by using System Restore to restore to a July 14 restore point, and all is well. Then on July 16, Windows creates an automatic restore point. Does that July 16 restore point include the change that I made on July 15 and then un-made by restoring to the 14th? In other words, if at some future time I were to restore to July 16, would I be picking up the same problem all over again? I would think (hope) that it does not, but I'…

which of my required system files shipped with a new XP install

I am packaging an ActiveX control which has many dependencies on the XP system files. I need to know which of them I do not have to package into my control since they are already included in the standard XP installation. My most requried files are: 1, c:\windows\system32\msvbvm60.dll (VB runtime) 2, c:\windows\system32\stdole2.tlb (OLE automation) 3, c:\windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx (common dialog control 6.0) 4, c:\windows\system32\Msvcrt.dll (c-runtime library) And my control also depends on some others files which I guess either not required to be packaged with it or already included in the default XP installation (not sure if I am right): 1, c:\prog…

Looking for a program to run batch jobs to copy files
by Guest dougsdir@gmail.com- 1 reply

Is there a windows gui program that allows you to pick files or folders and drag them to a destination, then add them to a batch list. Then build up a list with a few batch jobs and then at the end just run the whole batch copy one job at a time Using Windows Explorer , you can open up multiple explorer windows but it runs really slowly when you start doing a lot of multiple copies all at the same time I could write dos batch files but a gui would be simpler and quicker I found a program called file viewer 6 but that seemed to only copy single files at a time TIA Doug

Product key issue
by Guest Barry Watzman- 10 replies

I am repairing a laptop for a customer whose hard drive failed catastrophically (there was severe physical damage). He has the restore CD, and the Windows COA is attached to the bottom of the laptop. BUT ..... The COA has a tear in it ... and 3 characters are gone. The rest of the COA is intact and clearly legible. The missing characters are the first 3 characters of the last group of 5 characters, if it matters. And while some don't, this restore CD is requiring entry of a valid product key during the installation/OOBE process (this particular laptop was originally bought outside the US, although it's an English version of Windows). Does anyo…
