unable to connect on Windows XP SP2 - though able to ping???
by Guest DMinCA- 1 reply

my laptop connection to the internet is no longer working - none of my programs are able to connect (IE, Firefox, Skype for instance), except for ping which still works - I can ping the gateway, and get seemingly normal response times. When I bring up IE or Firefox after a while my Firewall (ZoneAlarm) asks whether program called "WLLogin Proxy" should be allowed to access the internet. I had not seen this program request access before I started having problems with my internet connection. I did a search on wllogin on microsoft's support site and did not get any hits. Do you know what this program is? I checked my IE configuration to make sure someone d…

I need to re-format my C: drive and reinstall all the software, inclusing XP. Problem is I have a number of copies of XP Pro and I have no idea which one was used on this machine. Where on the drive does the product key get stored? Having identified the correct disc and having done the re-install, will I have to go through activation again?

Every time I start my computer I get an error window saying "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe". Is This a real concern or should I ignore it. The funtionality of the computer does not seem compromised. However, I am no longer able to do a "system restore". Is this a result of the above error? -- normalnorm

Automatic Logon to Windows problem
by Guest baldy- 3 replies
Each time my PC starts now, I get an Automatic Logon To Windows screen appearing. In the user box it has the Administrator, & the password box is blank. It says that the computer is unable to log me on . I replace the Administrator user name with my user name and leave the password blank, and then I am able to logon. What I would like to do is for the PC to automatically log me on each time it starts, without having to go through the process I have mentioned. I have used userpasswords2 from the run command, and in the user accounts I have 3 accounts listed in the user tab. An administrator, ASPNET AND me. The box "users must enter a user name and p…

Reactivating Windows XP after a new hard drive install
by Guest BruceS- 3 replies

I was given a Dell Computer with a dead harddrive. I want to put in a used hard drive and reinstall the operating system (Windows XP home edition). I don't have the original CD for this computer, but I have one for my other computer (same operating system). I do have the product key sticker attached to this computer that I want to change the hard drive in. Should this be a problem in activating the software via phone if I don't have the original CD? Thanks, BruceS

Post virus-removal problems

Recently one of my machines was hit by some malware called "Antivirus XP 2008" forcing me to remove it by doing such things as removing registry entries, disabling processes at startup, deleting most recent files in System32 and Temp, stopping Security Centre under services.msc etc. I finally removed it by running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in safe mode & running the full scan overnight. The next morning, I carried out the removal process of the discovered malware. Spybot SD was then able to run after this. I ran Spybot (definitions updated) and it discovered and removed some more malicious items. It now seems as if the malware has been removed except …

More control over standard font smoothing?
by Guest David Given- 4 replies

Does anyone know if there's any way of getting more control over the way TrueType fonts are rendered using the standard (non-ClearType) font smoother? The issue is this: I use several operating systems. I use a bunch of fonts that are designed for unhinted systems like Linux and OSX. My system is dual-headed, with different monitor orientations, so I can't use ClearType (besides, one monitor is a CRT). Unfortunately, with ClearType turned off, the fonts get drawn so badly that they make my eyes hurt. Here's what it looks like on XP: http://www.cowlark.com/~dg/screenshot.png Here's what it's supposed to look like (taken on Linux): http://www.cowlark.c…

running XP Pro SP2 in place of a server machine.. pros/cons????
by Guest Niteowl- 9 replies

Hi all, I had a server hit with a power surge over the weekend, and it's dead... getting info for replacing it, but ...... I was wondering if I can just install the 2 programs it was running on an XP machine and run them from there. It would seem like it would work okay.. The unit I'm considering is a Dell Optiplex GX270, XP Pro SP2, 2.8ghz cpu, 768M RAM (I know it should be more, and could be easily enough)... 40G HD, One program would have to serve 22 clients only... the other program is used sporadically, perhaps 10 users at once... but is installed on all our computers... approx. 100 units. We have a simple WORKGROUP, so the server was really…

The lying troll David H Lipman has said I stole a file from Kelly's Korner however he will not post proof so I will to prove what a troll and a liar he is. The file below is the output of my desktop reset tool which is used to restore missing tabs in the desktop properties window. It is also used to reset your desktop back to the windows default settings. This file is generated by my batch file and then executed.
