The programs that start up automatically are listed in the Startup Tab of the System Configuration Utility which is invoked by keying in msconfig under Start Run. I want to add a program to this list so it will automatically start up when I boot. How do I do this? Bob Speck

by Guest Doug D- 0 replies

Hello. I have a need to rotate (replace) the WPA encryption key on about 50 laptops. Is there an easier way than logging into each machine remotely and replacing the WPA key? I currently do not use a radius server for wireless access. I noticed somone linked to this utility in another message. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html Will this work for replacing keys? Thank for any info. Doug D

My computer is possessed - a real story
by Guest bill@love.ranch- 8 replies

I have a laptop - actually 2 and a desktop, but this story is about Averatec. I decided to replace my 60GB drive with a 160GB drive. Since there were a few wierd things happening with the old system I chose to clean install the new one. --- XP SP3 Everything went fine, system is installed, let me test this sleep function. It would not go to sleep. Well, that was a simple solution, it can't go to sleep if the video driver is not installed. So I installed it and the rest of the drivers. Great, now it sleeps -- IT JUST DOESN'T WAKE UP. After MANY DAYS of reinstalls and searching, and running Seagate's tools, I ran SpinRite. Seems like the new drive has a s…

Bluetooth driver for XP - how to re-install
by Guest Michele- 0 replies

I have a microsoft wireless transceiver for bluetooth 2.o that controls my mouse and keyboard. It plugs into my USB port. I can only assume the ms XP driver has been corupted. I have removed and loaded the software several times, but it will not install the wireless radio for bluetooth. Everything I have read says that it is included in the xp sp2. I have sp3, so it will not re-install the sp2 pack, which includes this driver. Any clue as to how and where to get this driver for re-installation? I have tried a new transciever 3rd party, but it does not install the microsoft ones I need for my original ms transceiver, and it "goes to sleep" …

Hi, I recently got a new PC, with XP (SP3) pre-installed. After changing the configuration using TweakUI I have a slight problem. The PC shop had my system installed so if I turn it on no login screen or window is shown. That is broken now. The first time I started XP after messing with TweakUI I had a window where I was instructed to choose an account to log in with. But no account was shown! I solved that, but now I have a window where I need to enter a password. But that is not necessary. How do I solve this (In TweakUI? I'm at work, and I see that if you start TweakUI you can change the Logon. If you open Logon you have an Autologon where you can…

Skipping the logon screen on start up for a user
by Guest Bob Day- 0 replies

Using latest Windows XP Pro SP3 with all latest updates... If there is a better forum for this question, please advise. I use the PowerToy Tweak UI to skip the logon screen when you start windows (it is a simple checkbox). It has worked fine in the past, but now the check box unchecks it self every now and then, causing the logon screen to reappear, and I cannot figure out why. I reinstalled the PowerToy, but that did not correct the problem. The PowerToy URL is: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Any idea what the problem is? Is there another more dependable way to set windows to skip the logon screen for a p…

Every time I try to restore to an earlier date, I get a message that it was unable to restorew to the chosen date (point). I removed all existing points and created one for the installation of AOL - I typed in "AOL" since the date didn't work. It still was unable to restore to the selected date (point). Is there a way to set a restore point that will work? -- aag

I have Windows XP SP2. When I do a search for a phrase, my results show the folder name that I am searching under the 'Name' column istead of the file name that is found. I just type in the word and do a browse to a specific folder... nothing special. I have checked some other PCs here and it works fine on others. Any help would be appreciated. Jennifer

Windows XP SP2 Picked up the remote control, turned on the TV, computer shut down totally dumping a screen full of spreadsheets. Gotta love that. Previously, the monitor has just flickered and reset itself. It is sporadic. I haven't been able to discern a specific item that I'm doing when it happens. I had thought that it might be the scanner so removed it. Obviously it wasn't. I've asked the IT folk at work, electrician, my computer guru - all are lost. HALP! (an upgraded "help"). Suggestions, thoughts, updated Ouija boards.... Mist --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. Virus Database (VPS): 080728-0, 07/28/2008 Tested on…

Installing XP on SATA drive
by Guest Tony.Makhlouf@gmail.com- 6 replies

I have a Gateway FX7024 (came with Vista), that won't boot anymore (says cannot find boot device). Thinking it may the hard drive, I removed it and replaced with a new WD Caviar 320GB. I am trying to install XP on it, but I get BSOD. After some web searches, I figured I need the drivers for SATA and I tried to slip-stream them with nLite and with Driver Packs without success (still BSOD). I tried setting the BIOS to legacy IDE instead of SATA , still gets the same BSOD. THe computer seems to work as an Ubuntu Linux live CD works fine, and recognizes the new drive. When I launch the partitioning software in Ubuntu (GParted) the new drive appears as unallocat…

Allowing a iser to run a program !!!
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

I am operating a laptop that also has another users account on it. The other user is a fiddler and plays with things that he shouldn't play with on computers, so I have given him a limited account. The problem is I need him to be able to run and operate Autocad. This program needs to be able to write to the Registry. but because this users acount is limited it will not write to the registry, therefore causing an error and not allowing autocad to run correctly. Is there a way to allow this program to write to the registry so the user can run the program correctly, without him becoming an administrator on the laptop. or is there a program somewhere tha…

I lost my C drive and had to install a new one. I have a large amount of data on an existing E drive that windows does not see and allow me access. It is recognised in the BIOS as a slave, and a Western Digital diagnostic program says it is there and working perfectly. However, in the diagnostic program it calls the C drive a physical and logical drive but the E drive only as a physical drive. Am I doing something wrong? Is ther a way to access this drive? Thanks for any help

Spy Sweeper vs. Spybot Search and Destroy
by Guest Allen- 15 replies

I have both of the programs mentioned in the subject and have doubts that there may be conflicts between the two. I have two questions: first, are my doubts well founded; second, if so, which should I choose to continue. I am posting in this ng although I'm trying to use Vista, as a result of my XP machine suffering a hardware meltdown; the equivalent Vista ng is populated with a huge number of crackpots, weirdos and plain old lunatics; it makes it hard to ask a question there and get an answer that can be trusted. On the other hand, this ng is full of very helpful people. Thanks for any help. Allen

Is there a download available for Windows XP that will allow me to see files that were created using Vista? I have some people using XP and others using Vista and when a file from Vista is sent to the person using XP, rthey are unable to open it. I know that you can save the vista file in compatibility mode, but I was trying to eliminate that step. Any help would be great!
