by Guest JLCruz- 3 replies

When I pull up Run on the start menu, usually cmd will suffice when I'm checking things, but apparently for some reason Windows is making me put .exe on the end of everything or else it will say not a valid Win32 application. Anyone know how to cure this?

Quar Core 2 Duo and 64 bit?
by Guest Edward- 7 replies

I can't go to Vista just yet as there are some aompatibility issues with legacy applications I am forced to run. So, should I order Windows XP 64 bit? I don't have any 64 bit applications just yet and probably won't for a while, but will other 32 bit standard apps run faster on a 64bit OS or slower? Or no change?

Desktop background frozen

Recently my Trend Microsystems Antivirus detected several viruses and adware on my machine. I managed to clean them all up, but now I cannot change the background of my desktop. It won't even let me select a picture or browse to another file. I am using a Dell Dimension 8400, 3.19 GHz processor. 1 GB Ram. Windows XP, SP2 with all the latest security updates. The latest viruses that were detected had to do with Java applets. Unfortuanately I have already deleted them so I can't say exactly what they were. But the description on the Trend website said that they were not malicious. In the fix from Trend, I had to Disable System Restore and scan aga…

new Hard drive - can't see new space
by Guest +Bob+- 6 replies

A friend of mine had his hard drive go bad. He purchased a new 300G drive, installed it, used his "restore" disk (Ghost)from the manufacturer to rebuild his system. So far so good. But, he can't anything on the hard drive beyond the basic partition that the restore (Ghost) process created. He has one 32G partition, and that's it. Is there any way to get an extended partition now so that he can use the extra space? Disk Administrator shows no free space, Diskpart does not see anything either. Yet he's got 270G open space on the drive. Thanks,

Can't set permissions on drive
by Guest Ray Greene- 5 replies

I have a workgroup with several XP Pro machines and two 2003 Server member servers. I want to set permissions on the root of the d: drive of each machine bit I am unable to do this on the XP boxes. When I right-click on a drive and select Properties or Sharing & Security the only tabs available are General, Tools and Hardware. The Sharing and Security tabs are available on folders however. On the server machines the Sharing and Security tabs are available on the drives. I have Simple File Sharing turned off on the XP boxes and I'm logged on as Administrator. Is this one of those features that only works on a domain but not a workgroup? -- Ray Greene

Windows XP won't boot
by Guest -1- 1 reply

I can't boot my Windows XP Pro workstation. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work, start=>shutdown=>restart doesn't work, nor does log off. The last time I saw this, I did a cold boot, the OS got corrupt and a reimage was required. I'm reluctant to cold boot again. Is there any hidden command (eg dos based perhaps ) to reboot this that I'm not aware of? Thank you

Task Pane Missing
by Guest ClaimsQueen- 1 reply

I've read a few threads on here where the common task pane went mysteriously missing. I've tried going through the folder options and selecting "Show common tasks in folders". This option is already selected and still does not bring up the common tasks pane. Can anyone help me figure out how to bring the tasks pane back? Thank you!

Freeze on reboot
by Guest Fred615- 8 replies

I have an Intel dual core 2.4 ghz running XP Pro SP2. After a couple of reboots to install some USB devices including a USB to Parallel cable for a printer, I wasn't able to reboot the machine. All I get is the very first DOS type screen where the Function keys are listed at the bottom of the page. I've tried F8, F12, etc. to try to get to the boot screen with no luck. The first screen just sits there (for as long as 30 minutes) and I have to power down via the power button. The machine had been working just fine for weeks before this problem. Any ideas on what might be wrong and any possible solutions to get it running again?

I recently had to re-install Windows XP and since then I'm having trouble installing updates. I have automatic updates turned on but when I get the icon shield noting I have updates ready to install when I select to install, it appears they are installing but after I get a window saying saing "Some updates could not be installed" the number that could not be installed is the number of updates it found. I also have other programs that can't tell I'm connected to the Internet (ie; virus updates, network magic, etc.) I'm using wireless broadband (Linksys) and can navigate the Internet fine but, like I said, programs that need to update cannot tell I'm connec…
